The Top Penang Review: The Most Affordable Entry via Dining at Top View Restaurant

The Top Penang at Komtar is probably the most iconic attraction in George Town Penang. This time, we found that entry via dining at Top View Restaurant is the most affordable way to ascend The Top Penang to enjoy the amazing views from above. This reminded us of how we utilised dining at Lavo to ascend Marina Bay Sands at a relatively affordable price as well.

Our original plan was to visit Top View Restaurant to try out the afternoon tea set. However, we made a boo boo and did not make reservations, thinking that the afternoon tea set could be made on-the-spot. We were quite wrong about that assumption.

As a result, the friendly staff over the ticketing counter at The Top Penang, offered us suggestions of alternate venues for afternoon tea at E&O Hotel Penang. Considering that we had already arrived at The Top Penang, we decided that we should still ascend and take in the views over Penang island.

The question is how? Should we purchase the entry tickets or still head over to Top View Restaurant?

Turns out that you can either pay 68RM to go up to Rainbow Skywalk or you could pay 50RM (for 2 pax), which is the minimum dining amount required at Top View Restaurant. The math was quite simple. We went with the latter. Just so you know, minimum spending for dinner would be 65RM for 2 pax. In this way, 2 people can ascend at only 50RM, with food and drinks included. Isn’t that a great deal?

After we purchased the Top View Restaurant vouchers, we took the lift up to the 65th floor and transferred to another lift that brought us up to Top View Restaurant at the 68th floor of the Top Penang. Before we got seated in the restaurant, we took a walk around the 68th floor and found that the SkyWalk is also located at this level!

This meant that by paying RM50 (or 25RM per person), we were able to ascend to the same level where people visiting Rainbow Skywalk would have paid RM136 (or 68RM per person)! We also took some time to take in the views around Penang island as seen from The Top Penang…

The views were extensive as the Top Penang offered 360 degrees view around Penang Island. From here, we were able to see the Penang mountain range, George Town, Penang Bridge as well as Peninsula Malaysia. After taking the sights, we headed back to the bar area and got seated down. The staff then handed over the food and beverage menu, pointing out to us what was available as the lunch hour (12 to 2:30pm) had passed

This time, we ordered the Earl Grey Tea (12RM) and Honey Lemon Cucumber cooler (15RM) as well as the chicken chop (36RM). Whatever we ordered could be deducted from the 50RM voucher that we had purchased from the ticketing counter. This meant that we just had to top up another 15RM or so. Tiramisu and brownie costs 18RM.

We must say that the food quality was actually not too bad. The chicken chop was well-grilled. Tender and juicy, ticking all the right boxes for a good chicken chop. The drinks were decent as well. It was actually quite quiet inside the restaurant. So you’ll be able to enjoy the views undisturbed while dining. The only downside was that the reception was quite bad at the Top Penang – so much so that we were not able to pay via credit card as there was no connection on the credit card machine. Nonetheless, ascending the Top Penang via the dining vouchers at Top View Restaurant is definitely one of the most affordable ways to take in the views over Penang island from above.

At the Top Penang, there are also other attractions such as the Jurassic Research Center and the Musical Carousel. As the signs were pretty bad and there were no staff to guide us out, we actually found our way into the Jurassic Research Center (which was pretty cool by the way). After a short walk, we found that we were most probably heading in a wrong direction. We backtracked and were able to exit the premise.
