Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay Review: Old School “Kueh Kueh” Charms

Kueh Kuehs at Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay Penang

Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay was where we headed for our fix of Nonya Kuehs. Having visited Jason’s Nonya House and still craving for Nonya fare, we found Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay a popular venue for koahs such as Kueh Lapis, Kueh Talam and Kueh Bengka. After a disappointing visit to Wai Kei Cafe Penang, this was certainly a great perk-me-up.

Locals are also aware of their popularity. As we walked past the carpark towards Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay, a local called out to us and said “keep walking straight”. Obviously, we had “nonya kueh craving tourists” written all over our foreheads. Our drool must have gave us away. 🤤

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay Review

Established in 1933, Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay is one of the earliest makers of kueh kueh in Penang. Now helmed by the 3rd generation, the manner of preparing these bite-sized kueh still pretty much follows the methods (and thus achieving the taste) of yesteryear. This, we witnessed as we walked past the kitchen to the counter of the restaurant. This happened because the entrance via the carpark, passes through the kitchen. This was also where we saw a older lady teaching (somewhat painstakingly) the way to make the kueh to a visibly junior staff. Also, Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay seemed like a restaurant because of the many seats that they have inside. But not to worry, no additional taxes will be charged as the venue is pretty casual – though we must say that it is rather nicely decorated

This time, we ordered

Pulut Tai Tai (0.8RM)
Sri Muka (0.8RM)
Kueh Talam (0.6RM)
Ang Koo Kueh (1.50RM)

This came up to a grand total of only 3.70RM or approximately $1SGD. However, the price is this cheap because the cut of each kueh is really “bite-sized” (aka small). Unlike the kuehs we get from Johor, the kuehs here at Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koah can literally be demolished in one sweeping bite.

Nonetheless, the kuehs were good. You could taste the rich coconut milk of the Kueh Talam, the pandan sweetness of the Sri Muka as well as the peanuty goodness of the Ang Koo Kueh. If all of the options are tasty, you can be assured that the hard work and experience placed into creating these kuehs are not trivial.

Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay definitely lives up to its reputation being one of the oldest Nonya kueh kueh shops in Penang. The taste was authentic while prices are still kept affordable – albeit via smaller portions. Still, Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay is definitely a place that you should visit if you’re in the vicinity of George Town Penang!
