History of Teddy Bears as seen from TeddyVille Museum Batu Ferringhi Review

The visit started with a history of teddy bears around the world and the most famous of these has got to be the “Teddy” Roosevelt story

Story of “Teddy” Roosevelt at TeddyVille Museum Batu Ferringhi

It was said that while on an expedition, President Theodore Roosevelt’s bear hunter (Holt Collier) had caught a Louisiana Black Bear for the president to kill. However, President Roosevelt, refused to shoot the bear. This news caught national headlines and soon, a now-famous cartoon of Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot, became synonymous with the event.

A Brooklyn-based candy shop owner, saw an opportunity and stuffed a teddy bear, dedicating it to the “President who refused to shoot a bear”. Soon after, “Teddy’s Bear” (or Teddy Bear) became a popular soft toy for kids around the world!

Steiff bears are also famous “collectible” bears in the Teddy Bear world. Its iconic “Knopf Im Ohr” or “Button in Ear” depicts the quality of handmade teddy bears produced by this German teddy bear manufacturer. Accordingly, there are different types of Steiff Ear Tags that depicts the different editions. For instance, the classic Yellow Tag (red words) are the most common Steiff tag which depicts unlimited editions while White Tag (black words) depict limited editions and White Tag (red words) for special limited editions. For detailed description of the various tags, we found this site by Ashby Bears to be very informative.

The next segment showcased the history of Penang. The first diorama depicted the cessation of Penang to the British East India Company under Captain Francis Light. Fort Cornwallis was erected during that time to fend against pirates. Surprisingly, the fort was never used in combat during its operational history. Just like Singapore, Melaka and Ipoh, Penang had a large population of Peranakans where Chinese traders known as “Babas”, inter-married with locals known as “Nonyas”. This is also why, we get to taste great Peranakan food at these destinations even up to this day.

The great thing about TeddyVille Museum is that there is a good mix of dioramas that depicts everyday life and culture in Penang as well as a instagram-worthy shots with life-sized teddy bears frying a plate of char koay teow or enjoying the freshest durian. We really enjoyed the details and thoughts placed into the dioramas. You could see the facial expressions of the curious tourist, snapping away at street hawkers plying their trade or even exhausted runners on the Penang Bridge during the international marathon. You can see the level of details and heart placed into recreating the experience, as-if you were right there with the teddy bears!
