Kelantan Kway Chap Berseh Food Centre ($4.50)

During our stroll down Jalan Besar Road, we came across the Berseh Food Centre. Although we have already had Chin Sin Huan Pau and minced meat noodles from Earnest Restaurant at this point in time, we still wanted to check out what to eat at Berseh Food Centre. In this post, we’ll cover some of the food we’ve had at Berseh Food Centre and some of the stalls that will bring us back again!

What We Ate at Berseh Food Centre

Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake 福州宝华蠔饼

As we arrived at about 9:30am, it was still relatively early and several stalls had not yet opened. However, after we browsed through the stalls that were opened, we zoomed in on the Fried Oyster Cake

There were two options for the oyster cake at Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake. You can choose the normal sized ($2.30) or for 50 cents more, have the upsized version with additional oyster and prawn. As we didn’t want to wait, we went for the normal sized one. However, on hind sight, we should have waited and went for the upsized version (加料) because it was so delicious!

The fried batter itself was crisp but when you bite into the fried oyster cake, you’ll find it to be still very moist within. The ingredients were very fresh. The pork, oyster and prawn came together in a perfect oyster cake melody while the chili conducted this symphony of taste in a tangy and appetising flavour! Shiok!

Definitely a must-try when you visit Berseh Food Centre 🤤

Kelantan Kway Chap • Pig’s Organ Soup

After circling around the first level of Berseh Food Centre, we went back up to level 2 again to try out Kelantan Kway Chap.

Berseh Food Centre is also famous for its turtle soups (both herbal and braised). Sandwiched between two turtle soup stalls is Kelantan Kway Chap. The bright signs at its stall front accentuated the pictures of its kway chap. Plus, a short queue and several orders of kway chap on the tables in the vicinity, are always good signs.

We think that Kelantan Kway Chap is named after the road (Kelantan Lane) next door. They could have plied their trade there in the old days. We don’t think its a kway chap stall from Kelantan right? This time, we ordered the individual Kway Chap set for $4.50.

At $4.50, the portion was rather generous. There were braised tofu, pork slices, pork skin, fried beancurd, pig stomache, half an egg and the all important pig intestines.

First, the kway. It was chewy with a great texture. You’ll also be able to put in as much fried garlic and parsley (chinese coriander) as you want. A good kway is half the battle won for a good kway chap. The broth was a delightful light braised flavour which complemented the heavier soy sauce from the meats very well.

Next, the braised plate. The taste was not in-your-face salty and went well with the very pork parts. The highlight was definitely the intestines. No gamey taste at all. Well prepared to induce the fatty texture (not rubbery) which separately easily on each bite.

Overall, a perfect plate of kway chap. In fact, we’ll be back for more 🤤

Conclusion

Having tried just two stalls at Berseh Food Centre, we think it is a gem, waiting to be uncovered and rediscovered. Several other stalls such as the curry noodles, fried oyster, fried hokkien mee and the turtle soup have peaked our interest. Will definitely be back to try some of these interesting dishes.
