On the outside, Paper Rice Vietnamese Kitchen looks like a pretty ordinary restaurant. However, once we stepped in, it was a very different vibe and feel. It felt as though we had entered into a posh restaurant. The air in restaurant suddenly became much stronger and cooler – as though they had fitted additional air-conditioning within. The fragrance of the air, not of food but aromas from scented oils also filled the air. In that split moment, we felt that we’d better check the prices before ordering our food 😅

The choice of Vietnamese cuisine at Paper Rice Vietnamese Kitchen is also rather extensive. You’ll be able to choose from the traditional pho option, rice, vermicelli and even the in-house signature – the Waterfall Pho. The description of Waterfall Pho goes like this

Elevate your Pho experience to new heights with Paper Rice’s Wagyu Beef Pho. Indulge in the buttery, intense flavour of the finest Wagyu Beef and our authentic, simmered-overnight bone broth, all while witnessing the magic of our process as we set the premium beef slices ablaze right in front of you.”

To enjoy this dish, there are also some steps to follow:

Step 1: Take in all the visual delight of our Waterfall Pho featuring our Wagyu Beef’s exquisite marbling

Step 2: Seat back and watch the fiery display as our service crew touches the wagyu beef. Tip: Get a whiff of the pleasurable buttery scent from the heated wagyu beef.

Step 3: Pour the luscious flavour-packed bone broth into the bowl. Cautious: Hot!

Step 4: Enjoy slurping!

If you have tried out the Waterfall Pho, let us know more in the comments section below. We’d probably head over to give it a try in the future as well. As for now, we had to try out the “bases” – making sure that the pho and dry vermicelli bowls are up to mark…

What We Had at Paper Rice Vietnamese Kitchen Changi City Point

This time, we went for the Beef Combination Pho ($16.90) as well as the Fresh Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork ($11.90) with the descriptions as follows:

Beef Combination Pho
Pho with hand-chopped beef, shank, brisket, meat ball, omasum tripe, tendon and slow-cooked beef bone broth. Served with fresh vegetables and rice cracker

Fresh Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork
Rice vermicelli served with grilled pork, fried spring rolls, fresh vegetables and rice cracker

We also added the set meal for $4.90 more which includes the beef with banana blossom salad as well as a drink. But this time, we chose the Cold Vietnamese Drip Coffee which required a top up of $1.90.

It was actually our first time trying out the Banana Blossom Salad with Beef and it was certainly not what we had expected. Usually for a starter, we’d expect the appetizer to be a little sourish to entice the diner. However, we must say that the Banana Blossom is more of an acquired taste. The banana blossom itself was refreshing and crunchy but it really had no taste to it. Of course, if you dip into the sauce, you’ll find it to be a little on the saltish side and was definitely more delicious when eaten with the beef.

The big question though – would we order this appetizer for our next visit? Probably not. A crunchy and slightly sourish appetizer is probably what we’re looking for to begin and “awaken” our taste buds.

Next, the Beef Combination Pho

As for the Beef Combination Pho ($16.90), it was good. Not excellent but good. The broth was definitely infused with the goodness of the beef. Light, yet flavourful. The choice of beef cuts available within were pretty well done. The tripe had additional cuts to make it crunchy with a nice texture and the meats and tendons were tender as well. The only thing we thought it lacked was the “umami” – the taste in a beef pho soup that makes your palate swirl the broth while savouring the hours spent into making it. Still, it was definitely a good bowl of Vietnamese beef pho. Worth a mention was the beef ball, tender with an al dente texture. Delicious.

The Fresh Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork ($11.90) was definitely our favourite during this visit. The spring roll was freshly fried and crisp on the outside and you could taste and smell the smokey goodness of the grilled pork. Together with the vermicelli infused with the fish sauce combination, there was a mini explosion of textures, tastes and smells. Yum! Of course, compared to what we have tasted in the streets of Hanoi, we’d prefer the pork to be a tad bit fattier and it would have been perfect. Excellent offering.
