Jelebu Dry Laksa Review (Crispy Squid Laksa)

Jelebu Dry Laksa was created by Chef Renee Tang during Circuit Breaker in 2020. Simmered in the thick broth of the laksa, the noodles soaks in the best flavours from the handmade rempah right from her home kitchen. This time, we decided to try out the Weekday Set Lunch at Jelebu Dry Laksa – an opportunity to try out the dry laksa from Jelebu at a great value…

First off, the Renee’s Infusion homemade drink from Jelebu Dry Laksa was very refreshing. At $4, it was $1 cheaper than what you would normally pay for without the Weekday Set Lunch menu. Reminded us of the Osmanthus Jelly dessert from Tim Ho Wan.

The Tau Pok Popper (3pc) of Jelebu Dry Laksa Weekday Set Lunch Set was a surprise find for us. Not only did it resemble the famous “Tow Kwar Pop” from Tiong Bahru Market, it actually had some fish cake filling within. A cross between Tow Kwar Pop and Yong Tau Foo. Yum!

For the mains, we had the Crispy Squid Dry Laksa. We must say that the laksa was really quite tasty in that it had infused all the goodness of the laksa rempah into the thick rice noodles. Love that the dry laksa became a little soggy and not too al dente like in a normal laksa – which would have been pretty hard to handle. The crispy ebi and squid also added the lovely crisp texture to each bite. The only thin we didn’t like was the not all of the pieces of squid was crispy. It could be the speed at which we ate (rather slowly) that may have moistened the outer texture of the crispy squid. Overall, it was a great dish and innovation of local hawker fare.

The Fish Maw & Winter Melon Collagen Chicken Soup was rich and flavourful as anticipated. There were generous servings of the chicken thigh and the soup also came with the option of adding vinegar and pepper – transforming it to a close semblance of the shark’s fin soup. The only thing that we found was that the goji berry was actually too sweet for the soup. Usually having sweet goji berries are a good thing but in this case, because it was not boiled together with the soup, it didn’t gel with the soup but had a distinct sweetness that contrasted instead of elevating the soup’s flavour.

Rounding off the meal was the Coconut Ice Cream from Jelebu Dry Laksa. It was particularly creamy and the crushed nuts gave it a different texture. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

All in all, it was of good value to try out Jelebu Dry Laksa via its Weekday Set Lunch Menu. At $18 (instead of the usual $24), you’ll get to try the Tau Pok Popper (which was a nice innovation) as well as the coconut ice cream. This means in totality, the dry laksa was $6 cheaper than usual with the sides and desserts free. Not too bad at all. However, if you ask us whether we would come back during normal hours – we’d probably not. For a much cheaper price, we’d head over to Katong to scoop spoonfuls of Katong Laksa with its signature chili. Still, trying out this innovation once in support of our Singapore food-entrepreneur was still worth it with the Weekday Set Lunch Menu. If you have tried Jelebu Dry Laksa as well, tell us what you think in the comments section below.
