GetGo Car Sharing Review: Why Car Sharing is the Cheaper and More Viable Alternative in Singapore #SGUnited

GetGo Car Sharing Review Singapore

Singapore is known to be one of the most expensive places in the world to own a car. With the latest round of COE premiums rising as high as $85,000 for the Open Category on 20 Oct 2021, car ownership is definitely not an easy decision to make these days. This is also the reason why we still prefer the conventional “BMW” of Bus, MRT and Walk. However, there could be times where a car is required. Perhaps to send an elderly to the hospital for an appointment, run an errand that requires some extra boot space or simply going out on dates or meet your kakis. This is where car sharing apps like GetGo comes in. Not only is car sharing a cheaper alternative to car ownership, it is also more viable. Think about it. Less total number of cars on the roads due to optimisation of car usage through car sharing? This jingle immediately comes to mind…

Save my world…save my world…today” 😙 🎶

But Why GetGo Car Sharing?

Prices

Take a look at their price charts…

GetGo Prices Chart for Standard and Premium Cars - As low as $3 / hour!

Firstly, the prices are really quite affordable. For as low as $3/hour and a mileage charge of $0.35/km, it means that we can head out for midnight prata cravings for as low as $16 dollars! (3 hours rental ($9) + 20km to and fro ($7)). That is sooo much cheaper than taxi and we can probably drop our friends along the way as well! Even for an errand on a weekend with a bigger boot space, this works to $90 (6 hours rental ($72) + 50km to and fro ($17.5)), which is still alot cheaper than owning a premium car. Plus, you don’t have to worry about paying the peripherals such as road tax, car insurance and COE.

Secondly, we like it that GetGo is transparent. They just lay out their prices and peak/normal/off-peak hours right off the bat. Users just have to pick and choose the slots that fits them.

Convenience

GetGo Locations around Singapore (More than 600 locations and growing)

Unlike EV charging stations that are still in its infancy stage, GetGo already has more than 600 locations around the island for you to get your GetGo Car from. This means that, more likely than not, you’d have at least one GetGo location near you. For our location, within walking time of 5 minutes, there are 3 GetGo locations. Talk about convenience.

Easy to Use Application without Subscription – Pay-as-You-Go Model

GetGo has prepared a simple set of instructions on their website for new users to learn about how to use their application. We like it that there’s no “membership” required, unlike an xx car sharing brand where we’ve yet to utilise our membership of $100. 😭 The Pay-as-You-Go model is definitely a huge plus for millenials who are looking for the convenience of car ownership, without having to pay the full price for it.

Plus, check out the video where the nifty app allows you to unlock your car when you’re in its vicinity. This makes car sharing as easy as bike sharing! How cool is that?!

GetGo Car Sharing Review: Save My World

As the jingle goes…”Save My World…”, using GetGo Car Sharing really does save my world – both literally and figuratively.

Literally speaking, with less cars on the roads (due to less car ownership), we’re reducing the overall carbon emission as we aim to meet Singapore’s pledge under the Paris Agreement. If you’re thinking that owning an EV helps in that respect, well, it does, only to a certain degree. This is because our current model of generating electric power still comes primarily via fossil fuels such as oil and gas. Hence, every little bit of transport sharing, whether via public transport or car sharing, really does help.

Figuratively speaking, GetGo’s Car Sharing, really does help “save my world”, particularly, my pocket. Realistically, when I own a car, I don’t drive it for 24 hours straight. Likewise, the pay-as-you-go model, without subscription at such low rates, really does help with cost savings – I pay only for the hours that I use. Which beats paying for parking, road tax, insurance etc., for hours that the car’s just sitting in the parking lot. Think about it…
