Wildwoods Forest in Fernbank Museum of Natural History Atlanta Georgia

Our first attraction at Georgia Atlanta was the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. The cool thing about Fernbank Museum is that not only is it a museum with a hall that contains an entire dinosaur skeleton, it also has a forest that covers a span of 75 acres! :O We also got to catch a film before we ended our visit to Fernbank Museum of Natural History as well…

There are several unique “selling points” of visiting Fernbank Museum. Did you know that Fernbank Museum is home to the world’s largest dinosaurs, Atlanta’s biggest movie screen and one of the largest urban Piedmont forest in the United States?

In the late 1800s, a young naturalist named Emily Harrison led in preserving over 65 acres of forest in Atlanta City. It was said that the museum is so named because of a creek bank covered with ferns which she loved. Over the years, Fernbank Museum has grown to be a true “School in the Woods” where kids can come and experience nature while learning about history, sciences and more right here in Fernbank Museum of Natural History!

We think that it is really cool that Fernbank Museum sits on a lush 65 acres of forest where kids can explore. There’s even an outdoor play area known as Adventure Outpost where they can get some physical exercise in. Of course, there are also many instagrammable spots in the outdoors area as well.

Heading up to level 2, we entered the exhibit “A Walk Through Time in Georgia” which shows that landscape and various animals that can be found here.

At the same level, there’s also the exhibits “Sky High” where you’ll find specimens of birds that live in the area. Fantastic Forces is the “science” area of the museum where you can learn about scientific principles such as centrifugal force, gravity and bernoulli’s theory. There’s also “Nature Quest” where the young ones can have some fun and about as well…

Though we had missed the last show of “Into America’s Wild”, narrated by Morgan Freeman, we were still able to catch Angkor – The Lost Empire of Cambodia where we learnt quite alot about this relic in Southeast Asia…

Turns out the LIDAR (Light and Detection Ranging) technology is able to accurately map out the entire city of Angkor through the dense forest, revealing that the even though it was built in 1100s, it is bigger than the city of LA of today! In addition, we learnt that the demise of such a huge city was due to a 20 years drought and subsequent rains and drought, causing famine and thus the abandonment of the area.
