Ah Ye Kopi & Toast Review: Great Local Fare at Reasonable Prices!

What we had at Ah Ye Kopi & Toast Junction Nine

Ah Ye Kopi & Toast caught our eye as we were browsing through the dining venues with 50% discounts on Eatigo. Located at Junction Nine in Yishun, Ah Ye Kopi & Toast bears some semblance to other more established chains such as Ya Kun, Killiney and Heavenly Wang. The prices though, are slightly cheaper. But the real question is, how does it fare in the taste department compared to its rivals? Find out more in this review of Ah Ye Kopi & Toast at Junction Nine!

About Ah Ye Kopi & Toast Junction Nine

Ah Ye Kopi & Toast is located at the second level of Junction Nine – a neighbourhood mall in Yishun. This time, we took a short walk from Yishun MRT (~10 mins walk). Ah Ye Kopi & Toast is located at a conspicuous corner at level 2. Hence, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled if it’s your first visit here.

First impressions? It felt like a family-run affair. You can take your time to browse through the menu at the counter and won’t feel rushed to make an order. Seating area had an open concept and you can choose whichever table that is available. Approximately 20 pax can dine here (of course this figure changes according to the prevailing measures for dining in place).

This time, we ordered ALOT, as you can see from this overview of what we ordered (heads turned as we collected our orders – Kate was looking forward to the toasts :P)

First up, the Laksa ($4.5)

Laksa was actually quite good. The noodles were well cooked and were nicely coated with the laksa broth, rendering a nice slurping experience. The broth itself was relatively rich and was slightly on the spicy side – which we liked. Coupled with the shrimps and well-soaked tau pok, this was a simple yet delicious laksa.

Next, the Curry Chicken ($6.80)

The Curry Chicken at Ah Ye Kopi & Toast has got to be our favourite dish here. The curry tasted homely and had a nice consistency – rich enough to go well with rice or jiam ta lo ti (french loaf). Of course, the star was the chicken drumstick and thigh. They were so tender! The meat literally fell off the bones as we went in for our first bite. There is probably some separate preparations (i.e. boiling or steaming) before the combination with the curry gravy. Lastly, we went with the loaf option to dip with the curry. The loaf was soft and not the super hard french loaf, which soaked up the gravy serendipitously. Yum!

We also ordered the Otah Sandwich ($3.40)

As the menu only mentioned the item as “Otah”, we thought it would be a great accompaniment to the laksa or curry chicken. Turns out, it’s a sandwich! Let’s talk about the otah itself. It was substantial. Love that you could see slivers of the fish meat, an indication that its a quality piece of otah. We also enjoyed this rendition where the cucumber imparts the crunchy texture and the mayo gave a nice refreshing balance to the spiciness of the otah. Another great dish from Ah Ye Kopi & Toast.

Then it was time to try the Kaya Butter and Kaya Peanut Toasts ($2.40)

To be honest, the experience so far was actually quite good. However, since we’re talking about toasts at Ah Ye Kopi & Toast, the yardstick has to be raised a little. Hence, we want to be honest and say that Ah Ye’s traditional toasts is still a way’s off when compared to the likes of Ya Kun. The bread was simply not as toasty and crispy on the bite. Nonetheless, the fillings within – the kaya, butter and peanut butter were all pretty good. The serving is definitely bigger than Ya Kun but texture wise, it still trails. Still decent as a toast overall. The Kopi C ($1.60) that we ordered was on the mark and complemented the toasts well.
