Jonker Street Melaka

Having been to Melaka (also known as Malacca) in Malaysia several times now, we decided to distil all that we’ve done into this post on the Top Travel Experiences in Melaka Malaysia!

UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history

With influences from the Dutch and Portuguese since the early 16th century, Melaka is a world heritage site full of Asian and European cross cultural influences. Visit Stadhuys (Dutch for City Hall) and its surrounding red façade (hence the name Red Square), St. Paul’s Cathedral and also the A Famosa (aka Porta De Santiago) and immerse yourself in this rich European influence in Melaka. How would you know that the structures are from the Netherlands? Take a closer look at the bricks, Dutch bricks are slim and long as opposed to the fatter shorter ones that we see today.

There are so many things to do along Jonker Street! You’ll get to try all sorts of delicious local food, shop in the many quaint little shops and even head right into a night market on Friday and Saturday evenings. There’s also a little battle cooking up along the street – the battle of the Jonker Street Chicken Rice Balls. Find out for yourself whether Chung Wah or Hoe Kee has the better chicken rice ball in Jonker Street. By the way, don’t forget to try out the gula melaka and durian chendol while you’re there as well!

Authentic Nonya Food

Still on food. You really can’t miss the taste of authentic nonya food while you’re in Melaka. Instead of inadequately describing the amazing food we’ve had, we’ll just let the food themselves do the talking…
