Our first stop in Big Island Hawaii? Nope, not the fiery lava fields but the unique Pineapple IPA of Kona Brewing Company! We really love the casual atmosphere and tasty pub grub paired with freshly brewed beer.

Tip: To get air-conditioned seats, you’ll have to camp inside and wait for a while. Why not just let the host know that you’ll like an outdoor seat and get seated in the soonest possible time?

Kona coffee is well known not only in Hawaii but all over the world. On Big Island Hawaii, we visited both Kona Joe Coffee as well as Greenwell Farm. What we love about Kona Joe Coffee was the view over the Pacific Ocean that it offers while the intimate tour at Greenwell Farm gives guests a chance to learn about the entire coffee making process.

Tip: You’ll be able to taste all the different types of coffee at both Kona Coffee plantations before you choose to purchase them. Packaging at Greenwell Farm even have packaging with holes that even allows guests to smell the aroma of the coffee.

The cool thing about about snorkeling at Two Steps Honaunau Bay is that the deep waters offshore is literally two steps away. Just walk towards the edge of the cliffs, take one huge step drop into the water and then a second, you’ll be soon snorkeling with the diverse marine life off Honaunau Bay!

Tip: Try to come before 9am so secure a parking lot. When we were there at about 8am, there were already several snorkelers who had already completed their expedition!

4. Things to do in Big Island – Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Lava Entry

Depending on the time of the year that you’re visiting, there are two main things to do in Big Island Hawaii. One of the biggest things to do in Big Island is of course swimming with the mantras. However, as adventurous travelers, we decided to watch the lava entry at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! Though it was a treacherous 5 hours hike in total (remember to bring lots of water to keep yourself hydrated), over uneven and undulating paths (resulting in ugly and painful blisters), it was still rewarding to have done it and seen the “live” moving lava.

Tip: Park on the east side of the viewing point and cycle instead of crossing the lava fields to avoid the treacherous hike to the lava entry viewing point. Also, ask a friendly park ranger where the “live” moving lavas are and head over to experience it.
