Pietro Ristorante Italiano (Jalan Kelulut) Review: A Throw Back to Fresh, Simple Goodness

Tiramisu al Pistachio from Pietro Italian Restaurant

Recently, we were discussing why we wouldn’t flinch to splurge $30USD on a good pizza while we’re in USA but would think twice (or more) to fork out $20SGD for a pizza in Singapore. Then, we realised that it is due to the fact that the pizzas that we usually eat, comes from the usual pizza delivery joints such as Pizza Hut, Domino’s and more recently, Little Caesars. The reason why we were willing to part with $30USD was because of the gourmet Italiano pizzas that we would have in places such as Umbria in San Francisco and Pizzeria Due in Chicago.

After some research, we found Pietro Ristorante Italiano that serves up freshly baked, made-to-order, thin crust pizzas – all from the traditional brick oven. Sounds gourmet. But the question remains. Would we fork out more than $20 for a good Italian pizza here in Singapore? Let’s find out!

What we had at Pietro Ristorante Italiano (Pietro Italian Restaurant @ Jalan Kelulut)

The restaurant has a rather homely feel to it. There’s an outdoor al fresco area, complete with a wall painting of the canals in Venice. Inside, a splash of red, paintings and wooden furniture line the restaurant.

We had actually scanned through the menu before we arrived at Pietro’s. You can check out Pietro Ristorante Italiano Menu here.

This time, we went for the Pizza Di Pollo Arrosto Bufalo (Buffalo Roasted Chicken, Pineapple, Shallot Ring – $22.9) and the Ravioli Al Granchio E Aragosta (Stuffed Pasta w Crabmeat and Lobster, Prawn, Bird’s Eye Chili, Pink Sauce, Grated Reggiano Cheese – $25.9). To round up the meal, we went for Tiramisu al Pistachio (Espresso, Pistachio, Mascarpone Cream, Kahlua – $12.9).

True to the orders being “made-to-order”, we waited for 20 minutes before the Ravioli was served. Shortly after, the buffalo chicken pizza ensued.

We thoroughly enjoyed the crab and lobster ravioli. Strangely, it was not because of the fillings. In fact, we found the fillings a little too “seafoody” (if you know what I mean). However, the ravioli dough and pink sauce saved the day. The dough had a slight spring and chewiness to it that complemented the sauce really well. As for the sauce, we enjoyed the freshness of the tomatoes and the slight cheesiness from the reggiano but the nice touch was the chili padi (Bird’s eye chili) that gave the sauce a nice little kick. In fact, the sauce was so good that we slurped it all up, using our remaining pizza ends. Spicy but shiok.

As advertised, the pizza was every bit delicious and authentic. The thin crust had slightly charred bits that added to the crunch on every bite. The cheese, fresh tomato base and buffalo chicken came together in a beautiful, melodic, harmony.

Lastly, the Tiramisu al Pistachio from Pietro Italian Restaurant…

Kate always lamented that most Tiramisu nowadays are not the “real deal”. No kahlua soaked layers. However, the rendition at Pietro’s did not disappoint. The lowest layer was soaked in generous kahlua – not overpowering but adequately done. The mascarpone cream tasted really fresh and the pistachio gave a nice texture on each bite. A great tiramisu.

Verdict

If you’re looking for an Italian restaurant with a nice throw back to fresh and simple foods, Pietro Ristorante Italiano hits all the right notes. With the Eatigo 50% discount, the overall bill came to less than $40SGD which was quite good. We’d probably be back a second time to try out the Pancetta di Maiale Arrosto (Roasted Pork Belly) and the Pizza Prosciutto di Parma (Prosciutto Parma Ham Pizza).
