Riverview Hotel’s Sunday Brunch was where we enjoyed a leisurely Sunday afternoon with our family. We chose the Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel’s River Garden because
1. Selection of Food. The Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel has a wide variety of cuisine available. Beside the usual international buffet, there would be a “twist” at each promotion of Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel. During our last visit to Riverview Hotel’s Sunday Brunch, it was a BBQ and Beer Brunch which included the popular Erdinger Beer. This time, the promotion included free flow of moscato or prosecco as well as freshly shucked oysters!
Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel River Garden Coffee House
Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel River Garden Coffee House
2. Location. The River Garden Coffee House has a central location by the Singapore River. After your meal, you can continue to have drinks by the river (al fresco style) and watch people strolling/jogging along the river. Kids would be playing and boats passing by as well. Accompanied by your family as everyone enjoys this view? Priceless.

The prawns were fresh and succulent while the snow crab was sweet and delicious. Oysters were freshly shucked and were perfect with a tinge of lemon and tobasco! You can see how huge and fresh the oysters were. Comparable to the $100++ Sunday Brunches that we’ve tried. The only difference is that they only have 1 choice of oysters. But one good variety is enough to get us hooked The minus for seafood was that the chili crabs were not fresh. In local terms, “nua nua” (meaning soft). Not a good description for crabs and prawns.
Another plus to this Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel is the durian pengat! This we did not notice at our last visit. Again, this durian pengat is comparable to the famous durian pengat at Swissotel Merchant Court’s Ellenborough Market Cafe – with all the edible bits of the durian. So good, that we had 2 bowls full – each.
Lastly, we sneaked a peek at the choice of moscato and prosecco at the Sunday Brunch. We realised that the River Garden Coffee House did not scrimp on their selection and had the Cascine Prosecco and Brown Brothers Moscato on their list. We’ve enjoyed several champagne brunches and we realised that the Cascine Prosecco has a relatively close taste to some selection of champagnes. Hence, if you’re not really into differentiating between champagnes and prosecco, the Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel is definitely a great buffet at a great price!

If we had no budget to adhere to, the Raffles Hotel Sunday Buffet Brunch at the Bar and Billiard Room would be our top pick for Sunday Brunch in Singapore. However, as budget conscious Singaporeans, we’d definitely visit the Riverview Hotel Sunday Brunch for its quality, variety, fresh oysters and great selection of moscato and prosecco!
The Sunday Brunch Buffet at Riverview Hotel costs $48.80++ for adults and $22.80++ for kids. ANZ, Citibank, DBS, POSB and UOB Cardholders get to enjoy 15% discount on Sunday Brunch prices. CIMB Cardholders enjoy 17% discount on Sunday Brunch prices.
On day 3 of our Turkey travels with Chan Brothers, we visited a leather shop (complete with front row seats to a fashion show!), the Roman Ephesus of Turkey as well as the hot springs of Lycus River Hotel in Pamukkale!
Turkey Travel to Ephesus and Pamukkale (First Stop : Silvio Leather Fashion Show)
After a hearty breakfast, we went around Coastlight Hotel to take some shots before we headed to our first stop – Silvio Leather showroom!
At the showroom, we were given some apple tea before we were treated to a fashion show – front row seats no less! Of course, these were amateur models but we were rather impressed by this young male model who really strutted his stuff down the runway. During the fashion show, we were shown the latest and trendiest leather jackets. Some had amazing prints and most were reversible. Silvio Leather also claimed that they produce for international brands such as Burberry and Polo Ralph Lauren…
During the fashion show, members of the audience were also invited to take part and model some of the leather jackets. This brought much laughter to our tour group and we especially enjoyed the samba dance at the end of the show!

Dancing with Models
After the fashion show, you’d be led to the second level where the expensive leather jackets are. These leather jackets produced by Silvio Leather averages about USD1000 (AFTERspecial discounts). We were quite taken back by the price as these were non-branded leather jackets. But for cheaper leather jackets, you can proceed to the first level where there are off-season leather jackets that averages about USD200. If you have not purchased anything by now, you’d be led to a small leather shop next door that sells leather shoes and bags averaging about USD100. Yes, hold out and you’ll get better deals.
Tip : You have to be strong and resist the temptation of buying a leather jacket! Imagine the number of branded bags you can buy with USD1000 – 2!
House of Virgin Mary & Ruins of Roman Ephesus in Turkey
Leaving the Silvio Leather showroom, we headed to the House of Virgin Mary. As it was still drizzling, we only had a shortened visit here. At this attraction, there’s a baptism pool near the House of Virgin Mary, the house itself (where you can’t take any photos within), a fountain to draw water (so bring along an empty bottle) and of course the area where you could leave a wish to Virgin Mary herself!
Remember to bring your own note and mechanism to tie it if you want your wish to come true!

Then came the highlight of the day, our visit to the Roman Ephesus of Turkey!
There are 2 stories related to Ephesus
Story 1 – An Oracle
In the first story, it was said that in the 7th century, a prince of Athens received an oracle where he would build a city if a fish, wild boar and fire appeared simultaneously. One day, he saw someone doing some grilled fish and a wild boar ran over that BBQ. He saw it as a sign and built the city of Ephesus.
Story 2 – Amazonian Women
In the Anatolian version of the story, Ephesus was simply built by the Amazon warrior women.
If you take a look at one of the pictures below (the one with Medusa), you would see these 2 stories depicted on the columns of that structure.
You may know that the world-renowned brand, Nike is named after the goddess of Victory Nike. But did you know that if you look closely at her skirt, you’ll be able to identify the most familiar logo world-wide, the swoosh.
Can you see it?

Ephesus Theatre and Kate
Leaving the city centre of Ephesus, you’ll be on a main street that leads to the Library of Ephesus. Take a shot from here. Unfortunately, it was raining during this time
Enis (our guide for Chan Brother’s Turkey Trip), told us about this special stone that has a picture of a left foot, heart, face of a woman and rectangle carved on it. According to his analysis of this piece of stone, he was able to tell that there’s a brothel right next to it. How?
He said, “If you are having an empty heart and have a large left foot, you can find a pretty woman right ahead. Don’t forget to bring your credit card!” Haha!
Tip : Besides the library, the other prominent structure is the theatre of Ephesus. The best spot to take a panoramic view of the theatre (as shown above) is between the pine trees before you exit to the market and souvenir shops.
Facilities of Lycus River Hotel Pamukkale
To end off the evening, we arrived early at Lycus River Hotel of Pamukkale. Pamukkale refers to cotton castle, a formation of calcium carbonate that seems to form a “cotton castle” in the middle of a hill. Before we were to head to Pamukkale the next morning, we had a good rest at Lycus River Hotel!

MUST TRY Turkish Bath!
Live band with dancing folks
Beef patty with cheese was awesome!
There are 2 main things that you should try at Lycus River Hotel in Pamukkale…
1. Thermal Pool (aka hot springs). There’s a hot spring that you must check out at Lycus River Hotel. Remember to bring your swim wear! The thermal pool also leads outdoors and it was especially enjoyable to be soaking in the thermal pool during the winter season. Just like what you see on Japan Hour – winter onsen!
2. Turkish Bath. Originally, we were discouraged from taking the Turkish bath due to poor reviews from previous groups. Nonetheless, we still gave it a go. How can you go Turkey and not try a Turkish Bath right? It costs us 85TL (or $50SGD) and it was the best $ spent during the trip! The Turkish lady would scrub you first (you’d be in your undies or swim trunks) and then lay the softest and warmest coat of foam blanket over you.
Pure Bliss…
To form the foam (some tongue twister for you), the lady would trap some bath foam on a towel and swing it from side to side. This motion catches air within the towel and forms the foam which she would later squeeze upon you.
This would be followed by some gentle massages around the whole body (front and back) before washing you clean. No contortion, man-handling type of bath as they say.
One word from Tom : SHIOK!
From Kate : Because my Turkish lady had GIGANTIC boobs, as she massaged my arms, her boobs would rub repeatedly over my face! I think the Turkish lady enjoyed the bath more than I did…Boo Hoo.
After the enjoyable and relaxing sessions at the thermal pool and Turkish bath, we went for the dinner buffet where there was also a live band playing traditional Turkish music. Some Turkish folks also went forward to dance during dinner. Our favourite for dinner was the beef patty as well as making wraps using fresh lettuce.
Together with some members of the group, we had post-dinner drinks at the beautiful lobby lounge and chat till we were tired before we turned in for the night.

Thank you for hosting us at Hotel Jen Orchardgateway, one of the many hotels that you own all over the world. We thoroughly enjoyed the staycation at Hotel Jen Orchardgateway and we’re so glad that we got to experience, first hand, your hospitality over the weekend
Entrance of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway
What we enjoyed about Hotel Jen Orchardgateway
1. Relaxing in the comfort of your room
Superior Room Hotel Jen Orchardgateway
What we really love about your room is not only the view of the city (including Marina Bay Sands) but really the comfort within. Why didn’t you tell us that you had such a comfortable bed and a fantastic choice of channels on TV? We actually spent hours just lazing in bed, catching up on movies and watching “live” soccer…ah…
2. Great service from your staff
Jen Jen Jen, you have kept your “secret weapon” unknown to us haven’t you? We experienced great service all around the hotel! Upon arrival, we were promptly whisked away to our room by Kate and we were checked-in AT OUR ROOM! There were also all-round smiles everywhere we went. Looooved the great service from your staff at Hotel Jen Orchardgateway!

4. Cute little surprise
Received your note and fruits!
Thanks for the cute little surprise arranged for us while Kate and I were soaking up the sun at the rooftop pool. We enjoyed the fruits before heading back up for chilling hours at the Club Lounge. Love your handwriting by the way

When you told us that you were taking us to a seafood buffet dinner, we thought that it would be an international buffet with some doses of seafood. WE WERE SO WRONG! Your seafood buffet was A SEAFOOD BUFFET with doses of other meats. At every turn, we saw seafood, seafood and more seafood! But what really impressed us was that they were all really fresh. When we peeled the shell off the snow crab, the meat all stayed together (unlike some famous international buffet) and revealed itself as one huge chunky piece! Moreover, the baked lobster? Mmmm….so so so succulent!
Thank you for having us seated right opposite the lobsters as well. We were always the first on scene when the batches of lobsters were served! A secret to be kept between us ;P

9. Free rental of bamboo bicycles

We love this nice little touch of extending free rental of these eco-friend bamboo bicycles for all guests. Using bicycles to navigate around the city is definitely a great touch. We love it especially that there’s no time restrictions. Jen, you’re so smart!

How to get to Hotel Jen Orchardgateway
Yes, we remember that Hotel Jen Orchardgateway is located at 277 Orchard Rd, 238858. Thanks for providing us complimentary parking and reminding us to enter the hotel via Somerset Road (not Orchard Road). Of course we parked at level 8 as you have recommended because that lift has only 3 buttons – Level 1, 8 and 10.
We wanted to just take the MRT as well because it is just as convenient by alighting at Somerset MRT. Just a short walk from 313 Somerset.

Harris Hotel Batam Center was visited by one young aspiring blogger – Ken. Known simply as Ken, he is only 8 years old this year. Ken stayed for 2 nights at Harris Hotel Batam Center and here is his version of the review…
Getting to Harris Hotel Batam Center
From Singapore Cruise Centre, Singapore to Batam Centre Ferry Terminal, Batam Island. (When we exited the ferry terminal, they always ask us for taxi). 5 to 10 minutes walk to Harris Hotel Batam Centre.
Things to note
1. Check in is at 2:00pm Batam time GMT +7. Check out time is at 12pm GMT +7.
2. The hotel staff is very friendly and they also have a welcome drink! It tastes like lemongrass.
3. Getting to the Ferry Terminal and the Megamall opposite is very difficult.
Used Batam Fast Operator. Got seasick on the way
About Harris Hotel Batam Center
(Hotel Room Service Number is 0). Hotel room very clean. Swimming pool at hotel has sea view, 1.15m tall (Note from Tom : I think he’s referring to the depth of the pool).
What I enjoyed in Batam
Megamall has A&W, J.Co and other shops.
1. Did foot reflexology at Johnny Andrean for 42,000Rupiah ($4.50 SGD) per person. Hair wash and blow dry for 45,000Rupiah per person at UG floor. (Note from Tom : Foot Reflexology at 8 years old?! He really knows how to enjoy this Ken)
2. Lunch at Black Canyon Coffee Cafe. Cookies ‘n’ cream frappe costs 33,000Rupiah at Ground Floor.
3. Next it’s time to play at Time Zone! 1 card costs 100,000Rupiah ($10.70 SGD) with stored value of 175,000Rupiah. The best game was the car racing game. I played it for 7-9 times!!! But beware, there is a gambling game called Deal or No Deal!!! At 1st floor…
4. Movies at Cinema XXI are priced at 25,000Rupiah ($2.70 SGD) for Mon to Thur and 30,000Rupiah ($3.20 SGD) for Fri to Sun. Caught 2 movies in 3 days. Big Hero 6 and Penguins of Madagascar, 2 of the latest movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Note from Tom : This was the actual number of exclamation marks used by Ken – All 19 of them. No kidding!). After movies, I finished the remaining Rupiah in the game card
5. Bought back 2 dozens of J.Co Doughnut for 115,000Rupiah. Yummilicious!

Eastern & Oriental Hotel (also known affectionately as the E&O Hotel) is Penang’s most iconic hotel. Founded by the Sarkies brothers (who also founded Raffles Hotel in Singapore and the Strand in Yangon) in 1885, it was also known as “the Premier Hotel East of the Suez” due to its sea-front lawn spanning in excess of 800 feet and the hot and cold running water (yup, it was a symbol of luxury in those days). Thanks to the great folks of E&O Hotel (a huge shout-out to Eileen!), we were hosted to 2 nights stay at the Victory Annexe Studio Suite right here at the iconic Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang!

As we were heading towards E&O from Rasa Sayang, we popped by Lone Pine Hotel (also under the management of E&O) for a complimentary transfer.
We alighted at the heritage wing of the E&O and sure enough, the colonial and classy feel of the hotel dawned upon us as we entered the lobby…

After a prompt check-in at the Victory Annexe (too prompt in a sense that we were not formally introduced to the facilities of the hotel), we were shown to our lift. Walking along a hugely spacious corridor at level 8, we arrived at our suite…
Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang (E&O Hotel) Victory Annexe Studio Suite
As we entered the suite, the decoration and layout exuberated the classy vibe as we’ve had experienced at the Raffles Hotel Singapore. Our first gasp came as we laid eyes upon the bath tub…as the centre-piece of the entire suite, it is both functional and yet can be seen as a piece of art. The clawfoot bath tub, accompanied by a huge full length mirror, is certainly a lavish touch to the overall decoration of the suite.

There are also 2 wash basins for the lady and gentleman. How do we know that? The toiletries supplied at each basin was different. One has the shaver while the other has the shower cap. A cute little touch there

As with all 5 stars / luxury class hotels, the beds are always inviting. At the Victory Annexe Studio Suite, you’ll get a writer’s desk as well as pool and sea view at your own private balcony…

Both the Victory Annexe as well as the Heritage Wing have swimming pools of their own and guests are allowed to visit either of the swimming pools. We loved the Victory Annexe swimming pool (not only because of its proximity – ie walk less) but also because of the splendid views that it offers of the sea and the Malaysia Peninsula.

The E&O Hotel is currently in the midst of adding a spa to its premise (yay!). However, it’s business as usual at the gym and yes, it also has sea views as you work out on one of these treadmills.

Guests staying at the Victory Annexe also have complimentary access to the Planter’s Lounge. Coffee and Tea are available throughout the day while cocktail hours are from 6pm to 7pm daily. Do note that the Planter’s Lounge is NOT A CLUB. This means that it is essentially an area for guests to relax or have meetings. Hence, depending on the crowd, you may or may not be served when you visit the lounge. The other strange thing that we noticed was that there’s no signature cocktails served during cocktail hours (we ordered the E&O Sling at the pool). You would have to concoct your own cocktails with the given liquor and drinks

There’s a good spread and variety of breakfast at Sarkies that ranges from asian (indian, japanese and malaysian) to western (patries, toasts and eggs). But for us, it was the overall experience of dining outdoors at the verandah, overlooking peninsula Malaysia and sipping over a nice cuppa while browsing the day’s news. Heavenly!
How to get to Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang (E&O Hotel)
Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang (E&O Hotel) is located at 10 Farquhar Street, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. From Penang International Airport it takes about 20 minutes (15 USD) by taxi and about 10 minutes (15RM) by trishaw from Komtar. If you’re taking a bus from Penang International Airport to Komtar, it takes about 30 minutes (3RM) by taking buses 102 and 401.
To sum up, we take a look at our BASIC FACTOR and the score for Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang, is a 4.5!
B – 1. Clawfoot bath tub. Need we say more? A – 1. Classy, lavish, luxurious and colonial. All the factors of a heritage hotel. S – 0.5. Like we said, checking-in was a little too “prompt”. More information could have been given at the reception. I – 1. Splendid views from the infinity pool. Great place to chillax. C – 1. Comfortable bed and pillows for a good night’s rest

The Rock Spa in Penang has won several accolades including the 5 stars rating by the Ministry of Culture Malaysia & Tourism – one of only two spas with this award in Penang. Kate enjoyed a Hard Rock massage at the Rock Spa (1 hour for 170RM) and indeed it lived up to its name as one of the most relaxing experiences in Penang.
2. Hard Rock Hotel Penang Swimming Pool

The swimming pool at Hard Rock Hotel Penang is one of the largest hotel swimming pools we’ve been to (second to only MGM in Las Vegas). There are 2 lap pools right in front of the lagoon deluxe rooms. A water slide , fun play area for the kids as well as the center stage pool. It was actually quite fun to swim from one end of the pool to the other. But you would have to get out and re-enter at certain parts of the pool in order to do so.

In addition, the singers NEVER referred to any books, showing that they memorised ALL the lyrics by heart! These guys are really professional! Remember to request for “Smooth” by Carlos Santana!

Teens can also hang out at the Tabu Teens Club while ladies can spot a new hair-do at the Glamour Hair Salon. For the die hard rock fans, there are memorabilia located throughout the hotel. You can also choose to go home with a city-tee with a visit to any of the THREE Rock shops located at the premise.
As a guest, you are also given the a code to download songs from the online music store. You can also choose to play on any of the 12 fender guitars for free – well a deposit of 5000RM is required before you can lay your hands one of those beauties
Last but not least, there are many beach activities such as banana boat ride, para-sailing, jet skiing and even horse-back riding available right at the beach front. Strangely, the sand in front of the Hard Rock Penang is really fine and comparable to that in Surfer’s Paradise Gold Coast. Hence, a walk along the beach should be in place

Pan Pacific Singapore Hotel’s Harbour Studio not only offers a fantastic view over the Marina Bay, but during the National Day period, it also offers fantastic vantage points for…you’ve guessed it! Fireworks! The harbour facing rooms (Harbour Studio, Skyline Suite, Harbour Suite and Presidential Suite) of the Pan Pacific Singapore Hotels offers breathtaking views of the Marina Bay including views of attractions such as the Esplanade, Helix Bridge and the Merlion!
Thanks to the great folks at Pan Pacific Singapore Hotel, we were hosted to a staycation at the Pacific Harbour Studio room and boy was it an awesome staycation!

Pacific Club Privileges @ Pan Pacific Singapore
In addition to the panoramic 360 degrees view of Singapore, the Pacific Club extends the following privileges to Pacific Club Guests…
– Champagne breakfast at Pacific Club or buffet breakfast at Edge, from 6:00am to 10:30am or in-room dining breakfast at your leisure
– Afternoon tea from 3:00pm to 5:00pm
– Sunset cocktails and canapés from 6:00pm to 8:00pm
– 24-hour club service
– Late check-out until 2:00pm
Use of Pacific Club private dining rooms with prior reservation
– 50% savings on secretarial services at the Pacific Centre
You’ll note from the above information that THERE’S CHAMPAGNE SERVED FOR BREAKFAST AT THE PACIFIC CLUB!! (Did we raised our voice a little there?). The other interesting thing to note is that the Pacific Club is one of the few hotel lounges in Singapore that extends the club service for 24 hours. A great gesture by the hotel
Afternoon Tea from 3pm to 5pm
After our swim at the pool, we headed to the Pacific Club for afternoon tea at about 4pm. Once we entered the club at the 38th level, we realised that the club is slightly different from the club lounges of the other hotels. As we stepped out of the lift, we were promptly greeted by the staff with huge smiles and echoing sounds of “welcome”. It was as if we had known each other for the longest time and the staff were welcoming us back to the club once again…
Rafael, the club manager accentuated this “life” of the club with his outgoing personality and warm hospitality. He then asked if it was our first time at the club and unreservedly gave us a quick tour of the premise (all these time, not knowing that we were hosted to a stay at the Pan Pacific Singapore! Talk about great service…)

There were ample seats at the Pacific Club which were tastefully decorated and laid out. In addition to the splendid views over the marina bay, you can also enjoy sun rise AND sun set from the Pacific Club as well. For those who prefer a little bit of privacy, there are 2 private dining rooms that can be made available with prior arrangements.
As for the afternoon tea…

Sunset cocktail from 6pm to 8pm
The sunset cocktail at the Pacific Club is aptly named because of its splendid views of the sunset over the horizon in the direction of Swissotel Singapore. After the afternoon tea, we continued to “chope” our spot and played some scrabble until the cocktail commenced. The alcoholic choices available during cocktails include international and in-house cocktails, beers, wines and champagnes!

At about 6:45pm, we witnessed the fly past of the National Flag…

After seeing this manoeuvre “live” from the Pacific Club, we realised our low our helicopters actually flew and what risks they were actually subjected to. At one point, we thought that they were REALLY close to the buildings as they headed towards the floating platform.
Kudos to our Airforce chaps for making this difficult feat seem so easy!
After Breakfast at Edge Restaurant
After breakfast at Edge the next morning, we headed back to the Pacific Club to have our daily coffee fix and enjoyed a lazy Sunday morning with the Sunday Times! Gourmet coffee, views of the Marina Bay and the Sunday Times? Ah…

The thing is, this item is not shown on the menu and you will have to tell the chef that you would like “Eggs Benedict”. The funny thing was, once you ordered it, others having seen it, would follow suit (who wouldnt right?!). So the chef would try to pass to you in the fastest possible manner before anyone can ask “what was that?!”

The Pacific Marketplace also recently launched the SuperMuffin! When you think of muffins, you’d usually think of the sweet ones like chocolate and banana muffins right? The SuperMuffin is an innovative series of savoury muffins that was actually interestingly good. We tried the Ms Piggy (Char Siew with Salted Egg) SuperMuffin and were surprised by the unique taste. Although at $7++, it was a tad on the expensive side, we still think it is worth A try…(note the emphasis on “A”) Other choices include Chicken Run, succulent chicken wok-fried with garlic chives and Shaoxing Wine; Minotaur, classic Braised oxtail; Hulk, a decadent blend of Mushroom, Cream and Cheese; and Krrish, curry potatoes with a medley of Indian spices.

We also tried the Chicken Not Little sandwich with Pacific Cobb Salad at $17++

For something that is a little lower in price, the cupcakes goes for $4++ while the croissants goes for $3++. These prices are quite reasonable considering that the Pacific Marketplace is located within the hotel and may be possibly cheaper than some artisanal cafes…

To sum up, we take a look at our BASIC FACTOR and the score for Pan Pacific Singapore Hotel, is a 4.5!
B – 1. Huge and modern bath tub with TV views and views of the Marina Bay Skyline. Shiok! A – 1. In terms of ambience, you’ll feel the touch of class as you enter into the lobby surrounded with the uniquely designed individual pods. S – 1. Service was prompt and individualised , especially when you enter the Pacific Club! I – 0.5. One of the largest pools in the Marina Bay Area. You can compare by taking the bubble lifts of the Pan Pacific Hotel which overlooks the pools of several hotels nearby. C – 1. Bed was firm, large and comfy. Views of the Marina Bay as you sleep? Marvellous!
Miaoli Maison De Chine Hotel (兆品酒店苗栗) just completed its renovation with an inclusion of a new wing and a brand new fitness centre with spa pools! (What?!) Thanks to the great folks at Miaoli Maison De Chine (thanks Shelly!), we were hosted to a stay at the brand new Premier Suite of Miaoli Maison De Chine!
Facade of Miaoli Maison De Chine
Main Entrance of Miaoli Maison De Chine Zhunan
As we approached the hotel, we were really amazed by the intricacies of the baroque-styled architecture and once you entered into the hotel, you’d be greeted by this huge baroque paintwork by Peter Paul Rubens. Accompanying it is this beautiful hanging chandelier which was put in place, piece by piece by the chandelier masters. Together with the huge lobby space, we were seemingly transported into another dimension…

At the reception, the checking-in process was very smooth and we were greeted with all round smiles while we were given clear instructions to our room at level 5. First impression of the room? HUGE and SPACIOUS!

Banquets Meetings and Conferences
We started our tour of Miaoli Maison De Chine at the Banquet Meeting Area. Perhaps we’ll hold our 10 years anniversary celebrations here?
Banquet meeting area of Miaoli Maison De Chine
The Banquet Meeting Area is actually a space for discussions on the use of the various meeting and banquet rooms on the premise of the hotel. The really interesting part of this area is that there are 2 separate rooms next to each other which allows parents of both families to do their own discussions before coming back together to make the decision! Sample gifts are placed at the side for the couple to conveniently choose their wedding favours as well. The hotel has really thought through the entire process eh?
The hotel also offers 2 grand ballrooms for holding wedding celebrations…
The Majesty Ballroom for a more traditional wedding feel
Or The International Grand Ballroom featuring the largest LED screen in the whole of Miaoli!
If you’re hosting important guests, you can also choose from an array of VIP rooms available, including the The Crystal VIP room or the King VIP room. Of which, the King VIP room features an automatic lazy suzy (it really doesn’t get lazier than that does it?) and 2 electric hot plates for ease of access to hot pots

For formal meetings, you can also choose from a host of meeting rooms. Including this one that has an overhead projector and a hidden white board for presentations and explanations!
Formal Meeting Room with retractable frames to expose a white board behind – a really cool idea!
For an informal area to chill and discuss business ideas, visit the wine bar Le Vino. The area is quiet and quaint which allows private discussions to take place. To top it off, the poem of Wine by Li Bai (李白 – 月下獨酌)is featured on the walls of Le Vino striking a contrast of western and eastern concepts of wine.

To wash, dry and iron those business shirts that you have, the laundry room does offer this function and it even has a steam iron for suits as well!

While walking along the corridors, we stumbled upon a “chess room”
Brands under LDC Hotels
Display of hotels by LDC group in Italy as well (next to the “Chess Room”)
Do not be mistaken because you won’t find international or chinese chess sets within. Instead, it is a mahjong room!
Mahjong Room at Miaoli Maison De Chine Zhunan
The table is professionally laid out and the mahjong paper even has lines drawn on it for players to know exactly where to place their tiles? According to Shelly, these rooms have been thought through with feed back from guests which are now pretty popular especially for those 通宵 (overnight) mahjong sessions :p
VIP Lounge with view of the garden at level 3
Garden view with VIP lounge and hotel facade in the background
We were actually a little disappointed with the VIP lounge as we have been to several club lounges (offering drinks, light snacks and even cocktail sessions) and we came here with the same expectations. Nonetheless, the serenity that the garden offers does bring about a really relaxing feel. Perhaps an al fresco club lounge in the future?
Maison Health Center
Entrance to Maison Health Center at B1
Reception of Maison Health Center Miaoli Maison De Chine
We were then led to the new Maison Health Center located at B1 of Miaoli Maison De Chine Hotel. So we thought to ourselves, what could be possibly interesting about an underground fitness center? Well, we were SO SO WRONG! The Maison Health Center is probably one of the most comprehensive and spacious fitness centers that we’ve seen among all the hotels we’ve visited! The pool is huge with modern curves around the edges and the gym actually overlooks the pool!
Huge swimming pool with inviting curves along the edges

But the real surprise is yet to come! The health center not only offers the usual steam bath and sauna but also 3 spa pools at different temperatures! How cool is that?!
3 different spa pools at Miaoli Maison’s Health Center!
This is a really cool concept, unlike any other we’ve seen so far and we’ve probably been to more than 100 hotels. What’s interesting is that each spa pool is “colour-coded” with the blue indicating the cold pool, amber indicating the nice warm pool and red indicating the hot pool. There are also different water jets within the different pools. Our favourite of which is the rain shower like jet in the warm pool. How is it like? Come to Miaoli Maison De Chine Zhunan to find out!

Dinner at Pin Jiang Nan
Again, after taking feed backs from customers who prefer asian-styled cuisine, Pin Jiang Nan was born.
Menu of Pin Jiang Nan 品江南 Miaoli Maison De Chine
品江南 is mainly a dim sum restaurant that offers an alternative to guests who prefer asian cuisine. Although primarily focusing on dim sum, you can also order dishes or mains (such as noodles and rice) to complete the meal. What to eat here? The dumplings of course!
Prawn dumplings (虾仁蒸饺)exquisitely shaped by the master chef
The Si Gua Tang Bao 丝瓜汤包 (a variation of the 上海汤包)with perfect thickness of the melon slice
To say that we love the dumplings at Pin Jiang Nan is really an understatement. We were impressed. The dumplings were made only upon order and the open kitchen concept allows guests to see the chefs in action. This also allows you to know that your dumplings are fresh off the hands of the chefs upon request. A guarantee of freshness! The taste? Pure indulgence! Definitely one of the best dumplings we’ve had! We’ve really run out of words to describe : Fresh, succulent, juicy and did we mention fresh? Just come on down to try it and you’ll understand!
Chefs springing to action!
Chefs making the prawn dumplings “live”
As it turns out, the master chef had close to 20 years of experience in making dumplings having been to several chinese and dumpling restaurants in Taiwan. No wonder you could see that level of skill in the video!
We were also introduced to Dan Huang Sian Su Xia (蛋黄鲜酥酥虾)and the Jiang Si Fu Ru Kong Xin Cai (姜丝腐乳空心菜). In particular, we were impressed with the Kong Xin Cai (vegetables) which was fresh and crisp on the bite and exuberates a mixture of sour, savoury and slightly spicy taste that was really appetising!

To end off the meal, we had the taro sago. Kate enjoyed it but I prefer the thick orh nee version for taro desserts Also, you may have heard some children laughter from the video above. This is because the restaurant has thought of catering to the kids with the inclusion of a kids play area within the restaurant!

How to get to Miaoli Maison De Chine Zhunan
Map from Zhunan Train Station to Miaoli Maison De Chine
If you’re alighting at the Zhunan Train Station like we did, you can actually take a cab to Miaoli Maison De Chine. The trip takes less than 5 minutes and is a fixed price of 120NT. But if you’re really game for walking, it is a 2km walk which takes about 20 minutes. Definitely not for those of you with huge bags and all.
To sum up, we take a look at our BASIC FACTOR and the score for Miaoli Maison De Chine Hotel, is a 4.5!
B – 1. Huge and modern bath tub. Shiok! A – 1. Miaoli Maison definitely ranks highly for ambience. At times, you may even forget you’re in Miaoli Taiwan! S – 1. Service was great and we were greeted all around the hotel akin to luxury hotels (higher than 5 stars) that we’ve been to. I – 1. Beautiful health center with one of the best spa pools we’ve seen. C – 0.5. Bed was a little on the soft side. Still comfy though.

It was also during this stay that we finally got to watch 2 shows that we missed and really wanted to watch – The Bucket List and Ender’s Game!

Breakfast at Audi Garden Business Hotel is simple and caters mainly to asian taste buds. There’s a selection of dishes and condiments for rice and porridge. On the other hand, there’s a small selection of breads and spreads as well. Though it was sufficient, we would have preferred some choices of eggs and sausages/bacons to round up a “big breakfast”. Coffee on the other hand was great! Remember to go for seconds!

The usual check in time at Park City Taichung is 3pm but we were about 2 hours early this time. But since it was hot in the summer afternoons of Taiwan (34 degrees! can you believe it?!), we decided to just chill at the lobby and surf the net. By the way, wifi is complimentary for guests and we were also served water as we enjoyed the A/C and comfort at the lobby. But soon (less than 30 minutes later), we were informed that our room was ready, guess that’s great service right there at the start of our stay at Park City Hotel Taichung!

2. Sun cakes. As a small welcome gesture, there were sun cakes (aka 太阳饼) placed in our room which was timely for our afternoon snacks! We enjoyed it over the in-room coffee plus the pumpkin chiffon cake which we bought enroute. A heavy afternoon snack huh?

3. Bath tub with TV view! What we really enjoyed most was this…

We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast on both days at the restaurant. The variety was good with a slant towards western styled breakfast which is great for business meetings and conferences held at the hotel. Besides the artistically decorated room, the bathroom is also clean and equipped with towels, toiletries and towels. The only gripe we had was that the shower area was relatively small. Otherwise, it was clean (very clean in fact) and had all the necessary items that we needed.

鹿早茶屋 A Popular Breakfast and Brunch Restaurant
Just across from 1967 City Central Hotel Tainan, there’s a quaint restaurant that is apparently very popular among girls and youngsters in the area. The restaurant is 鹿早茶屋 (lu zao cha wu). We also visited this popular brunch joint and eventhough we were the first to arrive at 10am, when we left at 1130, ALL THE SEATS WERE TAKEN! All 18 seats available! Yes…only 18 seats in the house so be early to avoid disappointment!

To sum up, we take a look at our BASIC FACTOR and the score for 1967 City Central Tainan Hotel, it’s a 2.5!
B – 0.5. The Bathroom was really clean but was rather small in size. A – 1. Although tucked away in a corner, the ambience really stood out when we first entered. S – 0.5. All receptionists never failed to greet us as we entered the hotel. Although we would have preferred our receptionist to know a little more information about where we could catch World Cup ;P I – 0. No swimming pools here. C – 0.5. Bed was a tad too soft for our liking.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 1967 City Central Hotel Tainan because of its uniqueness as a boutique hotel as well as its excellent location. Given the price, it is definitely worth more than a stay. Do consider the hotel, the next time you’re visiting Tainan Taiwan!

Oasia Hotel Staycation? Who would have thought that the Novena enclave offers an excellent Singapore Staycation option in Oasia Hotel? Over the weekend, we were hosted to a staycation here and were pleasantly delighted by this “hidden-gem-of-a-staycation”…check out this review to find out more!

Oasia Hotel Singapore Staycation
If you’re staying at the Club Room of Oasia Hotel, you’ll be whisked off to the club lounge, also known as the Living Room for a personalised check-in. We also had the refreshing peppermint welcome drink while Janice promptly checked us in – that is eventhough we were much earlier than the stipulated check in time
Guess who we brought for our Oasia Hotel staycation this time round? Our 2bearbears!

1. Splendid views. Club rooms are located above level 22 (we stayed at level 24) and offers marvelous views in and around the Novena enclave. There are also 2 kinds of mechanically-operted blinds over 3 panels that blocks the “prying eyes” of the condominium opposite while still allowing you to enjoy the views!
2. Huge TV. The 46 inch TV does perk you up as you enjoy the staycation at Oasia. We caught “How to train your dragon” on Channel 5, a good recap after just watching D2 (D2 is our short form for “How to train your Dragon 2).
3. In-room spa?Remember we mentioned the rice grain soap bar? It actually has orange and tangerine essential oils infused into the soap bar! The smell was relaxing yet the rice grain softly exfoliates your skin…a great addition to the in-room amenities.
Oasia Hotel Facilities
Swimming Pool, Gym, Steam Room and Sauna at Level 8
There are 2 swimming pools at Oasia Hotel. 2 swimming pools!! The common swimming pool is located at level 8 along with the hotel’s gym, sauna and steam room. In addition, there’s also a chillax area on the same level that allows you to overlook views of the surrounding…

It was made known to us that Oasia Hotel’s Club Lounge (also known as the Living Room) has a little secret. It is the only hotel in Singapore which has its lounge next to its “Club Member’s Only” swimming pool!

Did we mention that both swimming pools at level 22 and level 8 were surprisingly clean? At the level 8 swimming pool, due to a shallower portion next to the deck chairs, you can actually lie there (like a beached whale) and feel absolutely no grime whatsoever. Impressed.
Drinks by the poolClub Lounge swimming pool at night
As the swimming pool is just next to the Living Room, you can choose to have gourmet coffee (we had latte above) or refreshing Italian Sodas (try the peach flavour!) right by the pool! In the evenings, the cocktails happen from 6pm to 8pm daily, here’s what the lounge offers…

What we really enjoyed about the cocktail was the service, great selection of drinks, proximity to the pool and of course the surprisingly wonderful sunset! Give Oasia Bliss a try, a berry based cocktail, definitely a hit with the ladies. Alternatively, you can have a dip in the pool while having some drinks and finger foods by the pool side. Surely a relaxing way to end the evening…ah…
World Cup at Oasia Hotel Club Lounge
During this world cup season, the club lounge has kindly extended its opening hours to show all, ALL the world cup matches to allow the guests to enjoy as well! Juices and coffee (important!) were made available too!

Service was just as prompt during the wee hours of the morning with David asking us our choice of drinks as soon as we were seated. We were there from 1am to 5am catching the Argentina vs Iran and Germany vs Ghana matches. We interacted with an Argentinian and German guest from the hotel as well during the matches! Definitely a nice touch by Oasia Hotel to extend this service to the Club Room guests!

Conveniently located next to Oasia Hotel, Enchanted Spa offers guests a relaxing option a stone’s throw away. Thanks to the awesome folks at Enchanted Spa, Kate was treated to a relaxing 60 minutes session of the customised massage treatment…according to Kate…SHIOK!

To sum up, we take a look at our BASIC FACTOR and the score for Oasia Hotel Staycation Weekend Getaway is a 4.25!
B – 1. There was a bath tub with the Rice Grain Soap Bar with Orange and Tangerine Essential Oils. A – 0.75. It’s a split between Kate and I for ambience. S – 1. Excellent service throughout the hotel at the reception, lounge and restaurant. I – 1. 2 swimming pools! Plus, it’s the only hotel in Singapore with a pool at the lounge level! C – 0.5. Bed was a tad too soft for our liking. Comfortable nonetheless.
All in all, we enjoyed the Oasia Hotel staycation, because of its location, its great service, cool swimming pools (with access to the club lounge), great views and of course a overall experience. The Oasia Weekend Getaway Package is definitely worth a stay! But remember…not for the food…

Gino Feruci Braga Bandung was our choice of stay in Bandung city after our stay at Sheraton Bandung. This is because of the location (along Braga Street – walking distance from the Asian African Museum), price (relatively cheap for a 4 star hotel) and facilities such as a spa, swimming pool and gym.

What we liked about the room was that it had a great view of Bandung city. However, 2 things needed improvement during our stay. Firstly, the room was not sound proof and we could hear people along the corridor and kids shouting next door. Secondly, while watching “Unbreakable” on the cable network, the programme suddenly went off and we were not able to resume watching the programme.

The spa and the gym are co-located in the same premise on level 4. We did not try the massages here as it was priced the same as in Sheraton Bandung – can you believe it?!
On the other hand, the gym was cool. It had treadmills that were facing the TV with cable. The only catch is that you can only switch on the TV by pressing buttons at the TOP of it (not at the sides or below). It took us some time to locate the buttons before we could enjoy our run while watching cable shows.

The Sublime Sky Lounge of Gino Feruci Braga Bandung is a great place to hang out and to enjoy great views of the city. The music’s not too loud and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. The drinks and pizza were a little expensive and the pizza was not that good though.

Straits Cafe Rendezvous Hotel Sunday Brunch Buffet
Sunday Brunch at Straits Cafe starts from 11:30am to 2:30pm and costs $48++ per adult. As with most Sunday Brunches, there’s a sashimi and oysters corner which we thoroughly enjoyed. The oysters were fresh, huge and succulent while the salmon sashimi was tender, sweet and does not have the “defrosted” taste that many buffet restaurants have…

And of course, the renowned Laksa from Straits Cafe!
After tasting the laksa from Straits Cafe, we finally understood why its so famous. The gravy was thick and flavourful leaving an aftertaste that leaves you wanting for more. The tau pok, infused with the gravy? Mmm…Mmm… of course, you can also choose to add your own toppings to the laksa, including fresh tiger prawns and maybe even the succulent oysters? That we didn’t try but do tell us about it in the comments section below!

There’s also a selection of desserts, but our favourite? Nope, not the durian cake, not the durian crepe and not even the durian puffs…IT’S THE DURIAN PENGAT!!

To round up the Sunday Buffet Brunch at Straits Cafe Rendezvous Hotel, we recommend having the traditional teh tarik. The teh tarik (also knowned as pulled tea) is tea traditionally transferred from one cup to another by “stretching and pulling” it through air to “thicken” the tea. As a result, you’ll have tea with bubbles and a thickened texture to it. In addition, this version at Straits Cafe is not too sweet, making it a great compliment with the desserts…

Rendezvous Hotel Singapore is located right in the heart of Singapore’s Art District, within walking distance to the National Museum and Singapore Art Museum (SAM). Thanks to the great folks at Rendezvous Hotel, we were invited for a staycation over the weekend at the newly renovated Club Room with access to the exclusive Club Rendezvous!
Rendezvous Hotel Singapore Facilities
We arrived early at Rendezvous Hotel at the start of our staycation and our room was not yet ready then (we usually arrive earlier to check out the premise and its vicinity). Nonetheless, we were warmly welcomed by Sabrina and Rasheda who brought us up to Club Rendezvous for drinks while we were checked in. For guests staying at Club Rooms, instead of queuing in the lobby of Rendezvous Hotel, you can enjoy the privacy of checking in at level 11 where Club Rendezvous is located. You can also do likewise for checking out.
After having some orange juice at Rendezvous Club, we decided to check out the facilities available at Rendezvous Hotel…

It was simply shiok, lazing in the pool on a hot sunny afternoon. In the evenings, when its much cooler, you can also opt to laze in the jacuzzi next to the pool (warm/hot water to be expected and yes, it’s all about lazing in the pool these days :P). The gym also overlooks the pool area…

If you’re checking into the Club Room at Rendezvous Hotel, you’ll not only be able to enjoy welcome amenities and upgraded bathroom amenities, you’ll also be able to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from 6pm to 8pm daily. In addition, you can enjoy your breakfast there and even light finger foods from 2pm to 5pm. In a sense, you can enjoy makan all day at Club Rendezvous!

Of course, the most popular dishes at Straits Cafe – the Laksa and Durian Pengat!

Somehow, we think that the pengat tastes much better than the puffs, cakes and crepes. If you think likewise, you can choose to do what we did – have a scoop of pengat with the puffs or crepes TOGETHER! Yum!
At the same time, Club Rendezvous offers a selection of dishes from 2pm to 5pm including mini burgers, egg and cheese prata, submarine roll and the bacon & egg focaccia.

Quincy Hotel’s Qool Weekend Staycation is back! Thanks to the folks at FEH and BM, we were hosted to a 1 night staycation at Quincy Hotel Singapore and just as it’s radio ads say, “It’s DIFFERENT!”. It certainly was!
Our stay at Quincy Hotel Qool Weekend Staycation could possibly be Singapore’s first ALL-INCLUSIVE Staycation!

At the reception, we were warmly welcomed by Madeleine and Zydney who promptly checked us in and served up our welcome drinks – ginger ale with fruit punch ice. Yes, fruit punch that was freezed and use as ice! :O
Madeleine and Zydney with our welcome drinks – Great start to a Quincy Hotel Staycation!
We were then introduced to the Quincy Hotel Qool Weekend Staycation benefits that we’d be enjoying during our stay…

– All-day light refreshments by Dean & DeLuca and Modesto’s
– Unlimited Wi-Fi access
– Evening cocktails
– In-room mini-bar

– Art Jamming (Saturdays) or Cupcake Baking (Sundays) at 3pm
– Saturday Night Movie Screening by the Pool at 9pm
What we really love about cruises is that programmes and food are planned for you. You just have to appear! It seems that Far East Hospitality has taken this concept and implemented it right here at Quincy Hotel, in the heart of Singapore’s Shopping Belt – Orchard Road!
Besides the welcome drinks, good service was also shown when Zydney personally showed us to our room – the Studio Room at Quincy Hotel…
Studio Room at Quincy’s Qool Weekend Staycation
From the video tour, you would have noticed the large window (which extends to the ceiling), offering a splendid view of the skyline around the hotel. In addition, the sexy glass window between the bedroom and the bathroom, allows you to enjoy the cable TV (mio stadium included!) while taking a relaxing bath in the bathtub!

The blinds of the window can be controlled by a press of a button and therefore you do not have to do “flag raising” at the sides. In addition, the other cool feature we noticed were the cable inlets just below the TV! No more turning and searching around the TV for the socket inlets!
Here’s a quick snapshot of the facilities that Quincy Hotel offers…

At 3pm, we headed to level 12 for…you’ve guessed it…ART JAMMING SESSION!
Art Jamming Session

According to our instructor – Damien (holding the camera in the picture above), he says that everyone comes and says that they’re not artistically inclined. But after 2 minutes, everyone would just start drawing the picture that they have googled and colour it with the acrylic paint provided (no mixing with water required – just apply the thick layers of paint directly!). The same happened for us! We chose a picture from Romero Britto and started to work on it.
As the soothing lounge music played in the background, our hands got to work and soon, the “Surfer Dog” was completed! Not that soon actually, we started at about 3:10pm and ended at 4:30pm. But still, it was quite an accomplishment!
Surfer Dog by 2bearbear.com – Isnt he cute?! It is actually for sale at a ridiculous price – contact us to find out more!
After you’re done, just leave it there to dry and the painting will be ready at the reception when you check out!
Totally enjoyed the art jamming session! Everyone should try it!
Evening Cocktails
After a quick energising nap, we headed back to the lobby restaurant for the cocktail at 6pm…(eat sleep eat!)

Although the variety of warm food was small, the quality more than made up for it! In fact, the fettuccine was so good that we had seconds and thirds! Rich and cheesy cream sauce with just the right texture for the fettuccine…yum!
Shopping at Orchard Road
After the cocktail session, we headed to Orchard Road and Far East Plaza to do some shopping! There’s actually a short cut from Quincy Hotel to Far East Plaza via York Hotel. What you will need to do is cross the road from Quincy Hotel and enter the lobby of York Hotel. Walk past it and exit from the open carpark area. Take a short walk down the slope and you will arrive at Goodwood Park Hotel on the right and Far East Plaza on the left.
From there, you’re open to a world of shopping at Orchard!

After a restful sleep in our room for the night, we had a light breakfast at Lobby Restaurant…

Cupcake Baking on Sundays
The cool thing about doing the Quincy Qool Staycation on a Saturday is that you’re able to enjoy both afternoon programmes offered by the hotel! After we checked out, we headed for the Sunday cupcake baking session! Do remember to put down your names in advance if you’re interested to join as there are limited slots for the sessions…

Quincy Hotel is located at 22 Mt Elizabeth Singapore 228517, next to the Elizabeth Hotel. In fact, they share the same parking facility (or rather Quincy uses Elizabeth Hotel’s parking for its guests). After parking at the Elizabeth Hotel, you can exit via its main entrance, take a left turn and enter into Quincy Hotel!
To sum up, we take a look at our BASIC FACTOR and the score for Quincy Hotel’s Qool Weekend Staycation is a qool 4!
B – 1. Bathroom comes equipped with a bathtub. A – 0.5. Inviting room and general atmosphere at the hotel. S – 1. Service was great at Quincy Hotel! Thanks Madeleine and Zydney for the hospitality! I – 1. Cool infinity pool with great views of the skyline. C – 0.5. Bed was comfortable.
Conclusion
In conclusion, here are 3 reasons why we thoroughly enjoyed our staycation at Quincy Hotel’s Qool Weekend
1. All-Inclusive Staycation. Quincy Hotel Qool Weekend Staycation could probably be the first all-inclusive staycation in Singapore. If you enjoy the programmes (and food) planned for you aboard cruise ships, you’d certainly enjoy the staycation at Quincy Hotel where food and programmes are planned out for you throughout the day (think art jamming, movies by the pool, cupcake baking, swimming, working out at the gym and all-day dining!)
2. Art Jamming. Before we did Art Jamming, it sounded more like an abstract kind of arty programme than an activity that we’d really enjoy. But after creating “Surfer Dog” (see above), it sought of rekindled our confidence in art and for those of you who have not tried it, you’d might be surprised at what you can do as well!
3. Good quality food. Eventhough the VARIETY was small, food QUALITY was actually quite good. During lunch hours, the chicken pho and curry noodle were really good as well. Not the kind that “clock” a noodle on a menu but was surprisingly tasty. The fettuccine? Guess we’ve said enough above (go for seconds and thirds!).
Sheraton Bandung Hotel Indonesia has undergone a complete face-lift over the last couple of months and have since opened its doors, welcoming guests to a newly-reinvigorated and modern garden sanctuary…
The newly renovated Sheraton BandungEntrance of Sheraton Bandung
Thanks to the good folks at Sheraton Bandung, we were hosted to a 3D2N stay and before long, we found ourselves being whisked away from the Husein Sastranegara International Airport to the hotel premise via the hotel’s own express transfer service.
Lobby of Sheraton Bandung
As we entered into the lobby of Sheraton Bandung, we could feel an air of elegance defined by the high ceilings, classy touches of tiffany blues as well as the brightly-lit spaces…
Welcoming Lobby of Sheraton BandungBrightly-lit spaces with a touch of eleganceWarm welcome by Ms Ari and her team at the reception! Thanks!
After settling into our room (newly-renovated Towers Room!), we went on a quick tour of the hotel’s premise and if you wish to, you can consider these various room options…
Room options available at Sheraton Bandung
Deluxe Room
Deluxe Room Sheraton BandungBathroom of the Deluxe Room
What we liked about the Deluxe Room was the neat artistic features. Notice the flowery design at the head board which also matches the design of the carpet! Alot of thought must have been placed into the design of the rooms during the renovation. The balcony also overlooks the gardens of Sheraton Bandung providing a resort-styled sanctuary on the outside and a chic modern feel on the inside. The only thing that you may want to take note is that there’s NO bath tub in the Deluxe Room. But have no fear, you can always check out the Towers Room for that small touch of luxury…
Towers Room
Towers Room Sheraton BandungLarge comfy couch – perfect for lazing inLARGE / HUGE Bathtub – definitely one of the largest we’ve been in!Spacious bathroom of Towers Room Sheraton BandungModern showering facilities including the rain shower head – SHIOK!Greenery as seen from the Towers Room Balcony
We were hosted to 2 nights at the Towers Room of Sheraton Bandung and here’s why we thoroughly enjoyed the room…
1. Spacious. The room was really spacious with a huge couch for lazing in and of course a large flat screen TV. The spacious concept also extends to the bathroom, offering users ample space for personal care. The balcony was also huge by these standards, offering yet another view of the garden sanctuary of Sheraton Bandung.
2. HUGE Bathtub! We cannot say this enough, the bath tub was really HUGE! Definitely one of the biggest ones we’ve been to. Perfect for honeymooners and staycationers alike!
3. Comfy Bed. The bed was really inviting and when you snooze, you really didn’t feel like getting up. It was also here on this huge comfy bed that we got our in-room traditional massage. Blissful luxury!
Junior Suite

As you step into the Junior Suite, you’ll realise that you have actually stepped into the next class of opulence and luxury. In this 64spm suite, you’ll find a living space and bedroom (both overlooking the pool area). Attached comes the pantry area, perfect for in-room dining options and of course the modern bathroom.
Presidential Suite

What we really liked about the Presidential Suite was its space. At 135sqm, there’s really no lack of space for work, dining, living, entertainment and relaxation. Surely the pinnacle of luxury at Sheraton Bandung. The only thing which we found strange was that given the huge space, there should have been a smaller guest room to house additional guests if required. Nonetheless, we found out that there’s an a room attached to the Presidential Suite that can be booked for additional guests if required. Combining the room rooms would yield a combined space of 177sqm! Now that’s HUGE!
Facilities of Sheraton Bandung
At the time of arrival, the gym and feast restaurant was still under construction. Nonetheless, we hope this video we’ve created (for the first time! So please pardon the standards) will be able to give you a quick overview of the hotel…

There’s also an in-house spa facility which we enjoyed.
Spa facilities at Sheraton Bandung
The traditional massage was professional and skilfully done. At one point in time, both Kate and I fell asleep! That was how relaxing the massage really was. And to let everyone in on a little secret, the massage packages at this 5 star hotel is actually very affordable! The 1 hour traditional massage was only 185,000 ruppiah or approximately 20SGD! :O
Spa menu of Sheraton Bandung
Throughout the hotel, you can enjoy the luscious greenery and the serene vibe of this luxury resort. What we really like after the renovation was that pastel colours brings about a calm and soothing feel. Perfect for a short weekend getaway for city dwellers from Jakarta and Singapore. As a 5 star hotel, Sheraton Bandung offers not only the full facilities of gym, swimming pool and lounge, it also offers an excellent selection of food…
Gastronomical Bliss at Sheraton Bandung
To top off the entire experience, we were pleasantly surprised that Sheraton Bandung also offers a high standard of food selection at its premise. Both western and asian selections were yummilicious and here are some of our top picks…
Soup Buntut – with ridiculously tender meat!Nasi Goreng Kampung – fried rice with an assortment of small dishes in itHawaiian Pizza (the ones with thin crust!) with a glass of chilled MojitoApple strudel with ice cream to round up with desserts
Daily Cocktails at Tower Lounge Sheraton Bandung
From 4pm to 7pm daily, there’s a cocktail session for guests at the Tower Lounge. At some hotels, this is also called the afternoon hors d’oeuvre, characterised by drinks and bite-sized finger foods…
Selection of afternoon treats at the daily cocktailIncluding pastries, cakes and finger foodsA small selection of hot foodsA selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beveragesChilled selection including Bintang Beer Ice cold beers, finger foods and marvelous views – Ah…Hors d’oeuvre we had
To enhance the experience, we suggest adding to this menu, buffalo wings. Coupled with drinks and idyllic views? Ingredients for a perfect evening ahead!
Breakfast at Sheraton Bandung
As for breakfasts at the Sheraton Bandung, these pictures certainly don’t do enough justice to the wide selection available. You can have hot asian dishes, western pastries, traditional noodles, omelettes (at an omelette station) and desserts (including ice cream!). When the Feast restaurant completes its renovation, it will definitely offer a fantastic start to a day at Sheraton Bandung…

In and around Sheraton Bandung
Besides the hotel premise itself, we were also introduced to some of the places that you can visit around the hotel. These places are a mere 10 minutes drive away and you can easily arrange for these day trips through the hotel’s concierge.
Djuanda Forest Park Bandung
The Djuanda Forest Park is a nature reserve and for a small fee, you can enter its premise to visit waterfalls, the famed (or infamous) Japanese caves or just take a relaxing stroll through the forest…

This day, our guide to Djuanda reserve was Intan and she took really good care of us throughout this day trip. She was really professional and hardworking in the sense that eventhough she was dressed in a pretty uniform with heels and all, she still offered to take the 1km stroll with us through uneven surfaces to visit the Japanese caves! Thanks Intan!

Particularly at Congo (primarily a wooden sculpture art gallery), we stumbled upon this art…

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton Hotel Bandung. Service was top notch (smiles from staff all around the hotel), ambience was relaxing, room was spacious and the food was awesome! We hope you have enjoyed our coverage of Sheraton Bandung and do let us know how you found the newly renovated Feast restaurant, Shine Spa and Gym as well!

Royal Cliff Hotel in Pattaya Thailand was our choice of stay during our stopover at Laemchabang while cruising with Mariner of the Seas (Royal Caribbean Cruise). Thanks to Maria and the Royal Cliff Group, we were invited to a stay at the newly refurbished Mini Suite Plus of the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel!

About Royal Cliff Hotels Group
The Royal Cliff Hotels Group is actually made up of 4 hotels, namely, Royal Cliff Beach Hotel (Casual Luxury), Royal Cliff Beach Terrace (Exotic Luxury), Royal Cliff Grand Hotel (Formal Luxury) and Royal Wing Suites and Spa (Ultimate Luxury).

As you can already guess from the names of the hotels, Royal Cliff caters to mainly 4 different groups of clientele…
Royal Cliff Beach Hotel – Suitable for beach goers (like ourselves) who wants to just relax and enjoy the panoramic sea views and stunning sunsets from Royal Cliff Hotel. Closest access to the new addition – the Infini Pool (aka infinity pool)
Royal Cliff Beach Terrace– For honeymooners who wants some exclusivity and romantic setting, the Royal Cliff Beach Terrace offers couples a relaxed atmosphere PLUS the closest access to 1 of 2 private beaches of the Royal Cliff Hotels.

Royal Cliff Grand Hotel – The choice for businessmen at Royal Cliff, the Grand Hotel offers several dining venues (perfect for closing those deals) and is the only other hotel (besides Royal Wing Suites and Spa) that has the Cliff Spa located within the premise of the hotel – a perfect place to unwind after a day of conferences and meetings. You can also take one of the shuttle buses from the hotel lobby to reach PEACH (Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall) within minutes.

Royal Wing Suites and Spa – The ultimate in luxury and exclusivity, the Royal Wing Suites and Spa is the only hotel with its own private beach, which the other 3 hotels CANNOT access (yup, that’s how private and classy the hotel is). In addition, it also has its own Cliff Spa within the hotel premise. If you want luxury and exclusivity all in one venue, the Royal Wing Suites and Spa offers the perfect getaway. To give an idea of how extravagant guests here are, an Indian wedding was held here during our stay and the couple spent $500,000USD for the 7 day event, complete with fireworks and rotating cube banners! Suites start at $3000USD a night during promotion periods.

As the name suggests, Sunset Terrace Lobby and Bar offers spectacular sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand and you can choose from its range of cocktails, sipping and enjoying the company of friends as the sun sets over Ko Khrok Island. The cocktails were amazing and the sunset seen here was simply spectacular! The only gripe we had was that the bar does not serve finger food and the only available option was complimentary nuts. Bar snacks such as chicken wings, onion rings or cheese fries would have be a great complement to the drinks and stunning views…

Next, we moved on to the highlights of our tour – the Presidential Suites
Presidential Suites at Royal Wing Suites and Spa
We have visited the Presidential Suite (Raffles Suite) of the Raffles Hotel when we were invited to a staycation, so a visit to the Presidential Suite of a hotel is nothing new. Nonetheless, what the Royal Wing Suites lacks in tradition, it certainly more than makes up for it with style…
Presidential Platinum Suite

There are 2 themes for the Presidential Suites at Royal Wing and they are the Presidential Platinum and the Presidential Heritage Suites. The Presidential Platinum is the modern take (and more expensive one) on how a Presidential Suite ought to be. For us, the jacuzzi overlooking the sea definitely trumps many other Presidential Suites out there…

During promotions, prices of the Presidential Platinum Suite starts at $3000USD. With 220sqm of space, you’ll be spoilt for choice in which part of the suite you’d want to be in!

On the other hand, we were told that the Presidential Heritage Suite, because of its tradition design and feel are usually used to house Heads of States from various countries. At $2000USD a night and a total area of 220sqm, the Presidential Heritage Suite certainly offers businessmen a huge space to entertain, think (study room) and also host private meetings in. The traditional colours also gives a warm feel to the suite.

We also tried the room service menu of Thai-Styled Fried Rice and Coconut Tom Yum Chicken Soup which was both yummy and had authentic Thai flavours (watch out for the spiciness of the soup!). If you’re staying here, be sure to try it as well!
Breakfast at Panorama of the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel
As for breakfast, if you’re staying at the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel, then breakfast would be served at the Panorama. According to Maria, the restaurant is so named because of its panoramic views overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. Indeed the views were great and many guests “vie” to be seated at the window seats (inside) or the terrace (outside).
There was also a huge variety of choice available ranging from chinese to indian and the continental breakfasts…check out the breakfast spread at Royal Cliff Beach Hotel…

During breakfast, we also noticed that there were many Russian tourists here. Perhaps the hotel has some collaboration with Russian tour groups. In fact, we also noticed many Russian and Eastern Europe tourists while walking along the streets of Pattaya. Might be useful to pick up some simple Russian such as “spatz see bah” (thank you) and “natz dro via” (cheers)!

Sunset by the Infinity Pool of the Royal Cliff Hotels
We have travelled the world over and been to many a hotel swimming pool. But the infinity pool at the Royal Cliff Hotel is unlike any other we’ve ever been to. There are 3 “spa” areas in the pool that gives you the option of lying down or sitting down and various orientations as well (pick the one with sunset view!). We also went to the pool again at night and this time because of its various mild illuminating colours inside the pool, it transforms the feel of the pool altogether! Because of these reasons and the views you see above, we definitely rank the infinity pool at Royal Cliff Hotels in the top 3 of our list!
You’ll also be delighted to know that you can actually walk to the Pattaya Walking Street from the hotel! We took a shuttle to the entrance of the hotel and turned left along the road. You will then come to a path like this…
Path that leads to walking street in Pattaya
Path that leads to walking street in Pattaya
Along the way, we met 2 old gentlemen and they told us that if we took the cobbled stairs (extreme right of the picture), we would save approximately 5 to 10 minutes. All in all, we took about 25 minutes to get from the hotel to the walking street.
There’s also the option of taking the bus for a fee of 100 baht that takes you to the city centre. But the catch is that it only starts operating at 12pm , once every 2 hours. Walking gives you some flexibility.

The San Remo was the 2nd hotel we stayed in during our recent visit to San Francisco. We were invited by the tourism board of San Francisco to 2 hotels – Palace Hotel as well as the San Remo hotel.
Facade of the San Remo Hotel San Francisco
History of the San Remo Hotel San Francisco
The history of San Remo hotel goes something like this…
On 18th April 1906, San Francisco was hit by a devastating earthquake and fire which literally levelled the city. Massive works were required to build the area. Hence, A.P. Giannini, founder of the Bank of America thought of an idea to build a hotel to house the men who were expected to rebuild the area. The New California Hotel was thus founded. Over the next few years, the hotel was home to sailors, fishermen and even chocolate makers from Ghiradelli’s chocolate plant. In 1922, the New California Hotel was renamed to San Remo Hotel.
Warm cozy yet rustic corridor of San Remo HotelPay phone with a retro looking sign above (San Remo Hotel San Francisco)
Instead of just staying in your room at San Remo, you should really take a walk about the hotel. Just wander through the stairs and its corridors, you’ll realise that there’s alot of history in store for you. There are pictures of the founding family, people who used to work in San Francisco and also the quaint rustic feel of the entire hotel.
In addition, the receptionists here are really cool as well. They know their stuff and can easily direct you to where you want to go or arrange transportation on your behalf. Alex was our receptionist when we checked in and he was knowledgeable in telling us where to go and what to do and when we needed an airport transfer the next day, he immediately made the arrangements. Quick as a jiffy!

As the premise is actually quite small, you’ll need to know that toilets and common facilities are shared in this hotel…
Common toilets with shower areas in San Remo HotelWash basin near the toilets San Remo Hotel San FranciscoTV Lounge Area San Remo Hotel San FranciscoLittle chillax area with a massage chair (San Francisco San Remo Hotel)
You may also wish to know that there’s an area where drinks and coffee is available. However, do note that the water is not replenished in the evening. In the morning, it may run “dry”. Good to squirrel some away before you sleep!
Coffee Tea and Water close to the reception area (San Remo Hotel San Francisco)
Another thing which you may want to take note is that since the reception is located on the 2nd floor and rooms on the same floor or higher, you will have to carry your luggage up one flight of stairs. A relatively narrow one as well. So try to pack light if you’re staying at San Remo Hotel.
As for the rooms, we must say that they are well decorated. Beautiful bedsheets, traditional curtains and wooden furnitures really brings out the feel of a historic hotel. Our room came with a wash basin which was a plus! There’s also a portable heater which worked really well and kept our room nice and warm

What we really loved about staying at San Remo Hotel San Francisco
1. Fior d’Italia, America’s Oldest Italian Restaurant is located at the ground floor. Upon arrival, we noticed that there’s an italian restaurant located at the first level of the hotel. It even has a sign that says “America’s Oldest Italian Restaurant”. With this sort of signs, you’ve got to try it right? Food must be good for it to survive this long. Sure enough, we did not regret our decision…

Ok, the pics don’t really do justice to how good the food was (blame it on the romantic lightings! :p) The mains we had were simply some of the best italian food we’ve tried. No wonder it’s still around after so long. Pure simple, great tasting food. Yummy! Oh, you’ll also get a 15% “Neighbour Discount” for staying at the San Remo Hotel, remember to show your room keys when paying!
15% discount for dining at Fior d’italia if you’re staying at San Remo Hotel
2. PRIME LOCATION. What we really REEAAALLLYYY love about San Remo Hotel is its location. It is just 4 blocks away from Fisherman’s Wharf! We were even able to grab some supper from the wharf which is about a 7 minutes walk away (inclusive of waits for traffic lights). From there, you’ll be able to grab some of the freshest seafood around and see the sea lions at pier 39!

Palace Hotel San Francisco together with San Francisco Tourism Board (SanFrancisco.travel) invited us for a stay at this gorgeous hotel while we were travelling in the West Coast of USA (yes, it was the Golden Gate Bridge that brought us back to USA).
Entrance of Palace Hotel San Francisco
We have to be honest here. Our first impression of Palace Hotel was that it could be just a normal hotel with the usual gym and swimming pool facilities. Little did we know that we were actually invited to a grand old dame of San Francisco!
Night view of Palace Hotel San Francisco
Established in 1875, Palace Hotel has undergone several restorations especially after the great earthquake of San Francisco in 1909 (although only 9% of the hotel was damaged) and after the 1989 earthquake of a 7 scale earthquake. When Palace Hotel reopened in 1991, its 1909 glory was restored at a cost of more than $150 million!
The cool thing about luxury hotels with a history is that
1. They are usually in the city centre. This is because cities build outwards from its centre and as it grows, the older buildings which are originally close to the city centre would then become prime locations! For Palace Hotel, it just a stone’s throw away from Union Square and the world famed, San Francisco Chinatown
2. Many famous people stayed here before. Famous personalities who stayed here before included Mark Twain, Thomas Edison (would you believe it?!), Oscar Wilde, Winston Churchill (seriously?!), Presidents of USA (including Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and more recently actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg.
Due to the festive period, the lobby of the hotel was brightened up with some decorations of its own…

As with our stay at Hilton Vancouver Washington, we were actually anticipating a package from San Francisco travel. Although it was not there upon our arrival, our receptionist Morey, helped us by checking through the records again (twice) and going back to the storeroom (twice) just to confirm that our package was indeed late. In addition, he also gave us advice to get the package tracking number (if available) and to contact SF travel again. All this while, maintaining his professional attitude and service. With such great attitude and service, it is no wonder that Palace Hotel ranks highly in their reviews as well.
Before long, Morey passed us the room keys saying
“There you are. Enjoy your stay at the Deluxe King Suite!”
So we wondered to ourselves, a suite? Perhaps, we just heard wrong. Better not put our hopes too high just to let them fall smack down right? So we got our stuff and headed to our room, walking past this BEAUTIFUL hallway…

As we entered into our room, we were pleasantly surprised by the sheer size. The room had an entrance area, living area, study area, bedroom, couch in the bedroom as well as a bathroom complete with bathtub. In one word – HUGE!

And so, our ears were not wrong when we heard Morey tell us about the Deluxe King Suite. A pleasant surprise for us indeed!

What we love about the room is its privacy. Because of its entrance (small little area where you leave your shoes), you have a distance away from the other rooms, giving you tranquility in your room. The other thing we love about the room is of course its size. We had ample space on the desk for our nightly summary, snack and watch some TV in the living room and lie down on our bed, again with the TV on! Yeah, sometimes we wonder if we’re travelling or just going to US to watch TV :p
Facilities at Palace Hotel San Francisco
Gym and swimming pools are a common fare at classy hotels such as the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. But the cool thing about the fitness centre at Palace Hotel is its sunroof…
Gym overlooking swimming at Palace HotelSwimming pool on 4th floor of Palace HotelAnother view of the swimming pool with gym in the background (Palace Hotel San Francisco)
The sunroof also makes the entire pool area really inviting during the day time!
In addition to the facilities, Palace Hotel has 2 other cool hang out places at the ground floor of its premise. Known as the Pied Piper Bar & Grill, it is named among the 7 finest bars IN THE WORLD! This is along the ranks of Ritz in London, the 21 Club in New York and the La Floridita in Havana. In that respect, the Pied Piper Bar sets the standard in opulence and elegance, definitely a place you want to check out when you’re in San Francisco.
Of course, the other venue is the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company right round the corner of the building. We had the Sea Cliff “Treasure” Sundae (with cookie at the bottom) and it was definitely one of the best sundaes we’ve had. With the rich chocolate from Ghirardelli, it totally puts a different spin to the common term “Chocolate Sundae”.

Created in 1852, Ghirardelli is today a familiar name for gourmet chocolate in San Francisco. Here’s a quick snapshot of the history of Ghirardelli…

Conclusion
After staying at the Palace Hotel San Francisco, you’ll realise that there’s really few places that can compare with this hotel that mixes history, class and luxury all in one. What’s more, the location of the hotel is simply unbeatable – walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and along the Market Street where the historic F-line plies.
A hotel recommended for all visitors to San Francisco!

Ok, straight up. Heathman Lodge Vancouver Washington has got to be one of our best hotel stays EVER!!
We were invited by Visitvancouverusa.com and Heathman Lodge for a stay at their premise. Before our stay, we did a check online and found great things about the hotel (great environment, delectable food) and of course some funny comments such as “the fake ski lodge next to Westfield Mall”.
Well, as it turns out, this “ski lodge” definitely has more to offer and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here…

It was a cold day (about 5 degrees celsius) when we arrived at Heathman Lodge. But with its warm, “wooden” facade, we kinda felt right at home as we entered into its cozy lobby
Lobby of Heathman Lodge Vancouver Washington along with Christmas DecorationsA small gift shop named Trading Post at Heathman LodgeAnother view of the lobby, reception and Hudson’s Bar and Grill of Heathman Lodge
There was a slight hiccup as we were checking in at the lobby. Apparently, we were placed on a different name by the tourism board (no fault of the hotel’s) and it took a while before the air cleared and we were checked in.
Special thanks to Marcie from Heathman, who was ever so patient, putting on that great smile all the way and also to Jacob from Visitvancouver for confirming our stay almost instantly, after calling him at his desk. We were slightly concerned as we came in at about 3pm not knowing if Jacob was still in and when we heard his friendly voice on the line, we knew that this would be solved in a quick time and it was!
The team that received us at Heathman Lodge (Marcie in the centre)! Thanks you guys!

We were told by our friends at the reception that we were on the 4th floor business level where amenities such as the daily reception (which we’ll talk a little more later) were…
Level 4 with access to Hospitality Suite ReceptionCorridor of Heathman Lodge with birds chirping!
As we walked along the corridor to our room, we were surprised to hear birds chirping! At first, we thought (or at least Tom thought) there was some birds on the loose at our level! But upon closer inspection, it was a recorded sound projected through one of the speakers. The reason we’re mentioning this is because the sound was light and sounded at intervals – very surreal sounding. It was as if we had really entered into the woody redwood forests! Even as we left our room each time, these sounds from the birds really perked us up. A great touch by the hotel!
So as we finally approached our room at 408, we were still not sure what was in for us (good move by the reception team to only mention the room number and let us be surprised by what the room has to offer). Words cant really describe why we’re ranking the room as one of our top hotel stays ever and so here’s the video tour…

Did you see the fire place, the balcony, the space of the living room and of course the IN-ROOM JACUZZI!?!
Let’s check out what we saw as we explored the room before the “Oohs”, “Wows”, “Wahs” and “Bearbear, come see!” came a sounding…

At this juncture, we want to ask you (our readers), which picture of the bed was a better taken one? We shall not skew your opinions by telling you who took which. But the thing we really want to mention is that the hotel spared no expense on luxury in this room with a king-sized TEMPUR MATTRESS! Yes, it is the foam-memory mattress and when we slept on it, we thoroughly enjoyed every inch of support on our bodies! Even as we were lying and enjoying programmes on TV (which is another story to tell), we could feel our joints being supported, especially my elbows, the feeling was great! Makes me want to get a Tempur in our place, sponsors anyone? :p
As we entered the final part of our “exploration”, this was where the real “Oohs” were let out… an IN-ROOM JACUZZI!
In-room jacuzzi in Suite of Heathman Lodge! Probably the most luxurious bathrooms we’ve ever been to!
Yes, because of the in-room jacuzzi, the room has almost immediately been bumped up to the top few hotel stays ever. With the attached TV and mirrors around the jacuzzi, no matter which side you’re facing (one or 2 people), you can still watch TV and enjoy the jets of water massaging you as you relax – all in the comfort of your room!
Perfect for honeymooners and couples who prefer a little bit more privacy!

As with all great hotels, there’s a gym which overlooks the pool area. A jacuzzi beside the pool as well. Yeah, we enjoyed our jacuzzi in the privacy of our room

There’s also a business centre where we printed out our tickets to the Winterhawks Ice Hockey Match on New Year’s Eve. It was the very first time we caught an ice hockey match and boy was it cool! (We’ll talk more about it in our subsequent posts).

PLUS! It’s walking distance to the Westfield Shopping Mall with over 150 stores here! Yes, Kate had a great time shopping here!

As mentioned in many of our hotel staycation posts, we mentioned about afternoon cocktail receptions and Heathman Lodge offers its guests at level 4 entry to the Hospitality Suite (formerly a presidential suite) for breakfast and cocktail reception!
Hospitality Suite at 442 for cocktail reception and breakfast at Heathman Lodge
There were beers, wines for you to choose from. Finger foods included tacos (with a warm tub of cheese!), salsa, nuts and healthy celery and carrots. Though we have seen more exquisite cocktail receptions, the fresh celery (with blue cheese – yes alot of cheeses during this trip!) and carrots were a refreshing change.

You can enjoy this in the common area, watching TV and sipping up good times or go to the next room for a more private conversation…

Oh, we forgot to mention that when we first entered, the room had a fresh oven-baked cookie smell and there it was, the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies! We wanted to have more but we had a dinner at Red Lobsters which we were looking forward to that evening.

Breakfast at Heathman Lodge was interesting with the self-made waffles.
Freshly made waffles with maple syrup for breakfast at Heathman Lodge Vancouver
The key to making a good waffle is
1. Remember to spray the waffle spray next to the waffle machine. It helps to spread the heat a little more evenly and prevents sticking on the sides
2. Dont be greedy! If you put more than required, it will overflow and create a mess! (not that we did…) Just 3/4 cup full as the instruction says and you’re good to go!

The best part of our breakfast was actually meeting Audrey. She was a friendly staff in the Hospitality Suite who attended to all our needs (also reminding us to press the blue button – guests here will understand what we mean!)
We started a conversation with Audrey and she told us all the beautiful sights that Vancouver had to offer. Told us all about Beacon Rock and Multnomah Falls which we visited the next day. Thanks to her great service, we had an enjoyable and informative breakfast! Thanks Audrey!
Audrey who was friendly and helpful when we had our meals at the Hospitality Suite!
Hudson’s Bar and Grill – Heathman Lodge Vancouver Washington
If you’re staying at Heathman Lodge, you have got to visit Hudson’s Bar and Grill at its first level. Many people across town come here just for its food and after trying its brunch menu, we think you should too!
Hudson’s Bar and Grill at Heathman Lodge Vancouver – before dinner time. Yes it usually gets CROWDED!
As it was the festive season, only the brunch menu was available. But nonetheless, we were thoroughly surprised by the standards of the meals that we were about to have…
Dungeness Crab Cakes Benedict – 14 USD (Hudson’s Bar and Grill Heathman Lodge Vancouver Washington)Smoked Salmon Skillet – 11 USD (Hudson’s Bar and Grill Heathman Lodge Vancouver Washington)
In terms of value, these must have been the best egg benedicts ever! How can 2 HUGE pieces of Dungeness Crab Cakes together with 2 perfectly crafted egg benedicts only cost 14USD?! The crab cakes were fresh and had a light crisp on the outside of the crab cakes. We’ve had crab cakes before and were thoroughly disappointed but with this, it totally revived our confidence in crab cakes once again! In one mouth, you can taste the crisp on the edge of your tongues and when you go in for the bite, fresh crab meat (meat only, no shells) just fills your cavities! Yummy! Simply the best crab cakes ever!
For the salmon skillet, we were quite skeptical that it costs only 11USD, the salmon must be no where to be seen right? WRONG! The salmon came in HUGE CHUNKY PIECES and coupled with the sauce and sourdough bread? Mamamia! Remember to let the yolk ooze unto the sourdough bread and enjoy it with a huge piece of that fresh grilled salmon yah?
Bloody Mary for 10 USD (Heathman Lodge Hudson’s Bar and Grill)
As for the drinks, we went for the Bloody Mary which was recommended by many patrons. When we ordered, we did not know it was 10USD! For us, it was a little too expensive, but the taste was great. You could taste the fresh tomatoes, lime and celery mixed into it. Very different from the BMs that we drank before. Tasted healthy actually
But truth be told. For the price, we would have gone for the beers on tab instead.
Conclusion
After visiting Heathman Lodge, we cannot imagine a visit to Vancouver Washington without visiting this quaint hotel.
Whether its for the stay, for the service, for its great location (for Westfield and Columbia River side trips) or simply for great food and company, Heathman Lodge has got to be your choice of stay during your visit to Vancouver Washington!

Checking In at AMOY Hotel Singapore
Checking in was a breeze and we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff of AMOY Hotel. While I was checking in, Kate took some shots of the lobby of AMOY hotel…

As we were checking in, we also received our welcome drinks which eased us into the vacation mood. But there was one other thing we noticed while we were checking in…
Chinese paintings done manually in the hotel’s lobby!
We saw someone actually painting the artwork on the furnishings of the hotel lobby! To add to the “wow factor”, we were told that this person, painting the artwork, is actually from the housekeeping department! We were told that the hotel has ideas that stems from artistic creativity, but seems like the idea has also permeated to staff of the hotel as well. Kudos to the management for allowing its staff to engage in these small improvements of the hotel!
Welcome drinks and the staff of AMOY Hotel – Apple and Lina
Special mention must be made of Lina. Throughout our stay, she offered impeccable and personalised service that made our staycation that much more special. After our check-in, she showed us all the way to our Deluxe Double Room. Talk about personalised service! Along the way, we were also told that the 20 most common surname are sprinkled across the hallways of the hotel.

Our first impression of the room is its modern design which still intertwines with Chinese artistic flavours. The view of the open concept wardrobe shows what we mean…

There are a few things that we loved about the room. Firstly, the tea and coffee selection which offers yummy flavours like Oolong caramel tea and Kimono tea. Secondly, though the room is small (20 sqm), it has a rain shower facility!
Lastly, the modern yet warm design makes one feels welcome for a stay

Why you should stay at AMOY Hotel Singapore
Frankly speaking, the room is not the main draw of AMOY Hotel. “Then what is?” you may ask. It’s all about location, location, location! AMOY Hotel is so superbly located that you can walk by foot to the CBD area, Singapore River, Chinatown, Club Street and many famous hawker centres to try out local flavours! But before we go there, let’s talk about the heritage of the Far East Square area
1. Heritage. You’ll soon notice that in and around the hotel, there are many monuments, displays and signs that shows the historical heritage of Singapore. This is because Telok Ayer ran parallel to the original shoreline (hard to imagine right? so much land reclamation has been done!) and many immigrants used to land around this area. They set up living quarters and also temples and mosques to give thanks to their gods for the safe passage to Singapore.

3. Food Food Food. If you’re a foodie like us, you will certainly enjoy your stay at AMOY Hotel. This is because, if you’d like to try some local food, AMOY Street Food Centre and Maxwell Food Center (famous for Wanton Mee and Hainanese Chicken Rice) are within walking distance. In and around Far East Square, you’ll find food establishments at Pekin and Nankin Street. For dim sum buffet, Ju Chun Yuan just downstairs offers a good selection at an affordable price. Of course, for more classy joints, Club Street & Boat Quay is just a stone’s throw away!

How to get to AMOY Hotel Singapore
Like many visitors before us, you’ll probably find it a little challenging to find the entrance to the hotel. So to make the process that much easier, here are 2 ways to locate AMOY Hotel at Far East Square.
Fuk Tak Chi MuseumAMOY Hotel is located opposite Telok Ayer MRT Station
Fuk Tak Chi Museum actually fronts the entrance of the hotel. If you’re walking along Telok Ayer Street (opposite downtown line’s Telok Ayer MRT Station), look out for the the facade of the Fuk Tak Chi Museum and bravely walk into it. You’ll notice a glass side door, enter it and you’ll arrive at the lobby of AMOY Hotel.
Alternatively,
