We were there at about 5pm on a Sunday and the evening crowd was already starting to build up. We decided promptly to go for the half pork knuckle ($15) and a pint of Hofbrau beer (click to check out our experience at Hofbrau Munich) ($12). Apparently, the ordering queue for the drinks and food are different. You pay at 2 different counters as well. While waiting for our turn, Two Wings with its slogan of “One just isn’t enough!” caught our attention and we went with 4 of its wings ($8.50)!
Two Wings has an interesting manner of processing your order. Your handphone number is used as a means to collect your order. Once your wings are ready for collection, a SMS would be sent to your phone and you’ll need to mention your order number on your phone in order to collect your wings. That’s a fantastic way to grab phone numbers for marketing purposes by the way…
The half pork knuckle did not look that impressive. However, we realised that our half was loaded with meat! The outer layer was crispy and the generous layer of fat fused with the meat within. Not too bad for a kopitiam actually. But of course, the original pork knuckle at Hofbrau Munich tops it all! 😛 The sides also had a local twist. Instead of the usual sauerkraut, achar was used. Ingenious really.
Next came our wings. Two Wings actually advocates a “correct” way to have your wings.
Step 1: Pull of cartilage at the wider end
Step 2: Twist and pull the small bone
Step 3: Twist and pull the big bone
Step 4: Eat and enjoy your boneless wing!
In this way, you’ll be left with a huge chunk of meat on the wing end which we thoroughly enjoyed with the chili dip. A great wing overall – crispy and juicy. But we thought that the taste department lacked a little. Best wings ever? Definitely Lost Coast Brewery’s Buffalo Wings; even better than the original buffalo wings at Anchor Bar New York.
At the same joint, there’s also Seasalt – The Seafood Place as well as Immanuel French Kitchen. There was also a bakery to round up the offerings here at Blk 119 Bukit Merah Lane 1.
Our Verdict?
To be honest, the food standard is really not too bad. However, for a coffee shop (hot and stuffy within), the pricing’s a little steep. In comparison, for $10 bucks more (inclusive of taxes), you’ll be able to have a slightly bigger pork knuckle, be seated comfortably in a restaurant, have beers going at $9 a pint and is located centrally – perfect for gatherings (read our other posts to find out where this joint is!).
For the novelty, Stew Kuche and Two Wings at Blk 119 Bukit Merah Lane 1 is definitely a good place to check out.
For return visits? We’re not too sure though…

1. Saizeriya at Liang Court

Saizeriya is a Japanese franchise chain that specialises in Italian food. Here, you can get cheap, good and huge portions of pasta! Our favourites include Peperoncino Bacon Spaghetti ($4.90), Squid Ink Spaghetti ($5.90) and the Asari Soup Spaghetti ($5.90). For these prices and these tastes? Definitely value for money! Saizeriya also boasts to have the “cheapest Escargots in town”! For only $5.90, you’ll get 6 yummilicious escargots oven grilled to perfection.
And the best part? There’s no service charge or government taxes. All prices that you see are NETT PRICES!

2. Hooters at Clarke Quay
Hooters has launched its set lunch menu at $10++ with 10 choices of main course to choose from. Choices include NZ Sirloin Steak, Hooters Burger and the Hooters Chicken Wings. Set lunch even comes with sides of curly fries (hard to get them cheap outside these days), drinks as well as a scoop of the day’s ice cream.
For $5++, you’ll also get to enjoy an ice cold mug of Tiger beer. All these can be enjoyed with awesome views of the river. Excellent value for its awesome location.

During our recent staycation at Village Hotel Katong, we decided to drop by for breakfast before checking-in and this is what we thought…
The first thing we noticed was the traditional setting of CMC Confectionery…
It seems as though time has stood still in this coffee shop. It continues to retain its old world charm and we think that the decorations has not changed much since inception. The clock is so old school!
As the number of seats in Chin Mee Chin Confectionery is limited, you may have to wait a while before being seated. We waited for about 5 minutes before someone else finished their breakfast. In this kopitiam, you’ll just wait for someone to finish and “take over” their table. Once seated, the table will be cleared and you will be asked for the drinks as well as the number of toasts and eggs that you would like. For the rest of the confectionery, you will have to go to the displays and get them like so…
We decided to go for kopi-see (coffee with evaporated milk) and kopi-peng (iced coffee) along with its famous toasted buns with kaya and butter. After ordering, we proceeded to take the custard puff and cream horn from the display…
There a few things that we enjoyed about the breakfast. True to being a confectionery, the famous toast lived up to its reputation. The home-made kaya was not too sweet and had the traditional eggy taste. The cool thing was that the toast was a bun and not the usual slices of bread. So it was lightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Our other favourite was the cream horn! Really liked the texture of the cream (slight salty) which went well with the crispy outer layer.
The coffee by itself was nothing to rave about. Quite plain actually. But the confectionery which had their various tastes gave a pretty good balance to the coffee.
The Verdict
To be honest, what really attracted us was not the food or the coffee. So what’s the biggest draw?
Tradition and heritage.
Traditional tastes abound especially in the kaya toast. The kaya is unique in that it is more eggy and less sweet unlike the usual kaya you’ll taste these days. In terms of heritage, CMC Confectionery is really part of our Singapore identity, retaining how it operates and even how it looks – maintaining the traditional kopitiam feel.
Great place for parents to say “When I was young, this was the kind of coffee shop that papa went to, no Starbucks last time…”

Jamie’s Italian Singapore Vivocity : Is it worth a visit?
Jamie’s Italian has finally made its way to the shores of Singapore! Well-known celebrity chef – Jamie Oliver, has chosen to open this italian restaurant at the vibrant waterfront of Vivocity. We’ll tell you what are some of the stuff we’ve tried and whether it is worth it to visit Jamie’s Italian Singapore!
What we ate at Jamie’s Italian Singapore
The decoration within Jamie’s Italian is the “atas casual” style where there’s an open concept kitchen to prepare starters and cocktails. Guests on the other hand feel entirely relaxed in this cosy atmosphere. As we visited the joint on a Sunday, we could feel the urge to just while away a lazy Sunday afternoon.
For starters, we went with Crispy Soft Shell Crab ($12.50) and the Jamie’s Italian Mojito ($18). The crispy soft shell crab was served with chilli, fennel, sea lettuce & smashed avocado with yuzu lime. Although the soft shell crab was really small (miniature almost), the taste packed a punch. The smashed avocado was rich and appetising, providing a perfect compliment to the lightly crisp soft shell crab.
Jamie’s Italian Mojito contains Bacardi Superior rum, Martini Bianco, fresh mint, lime & sugar, topped with Prosecco. The difference with usual mojito is the addition of the Martini Bianco and Prosecco. This version had loads of fresh mint, making the drink really refreshing. But with a pricing of $18, there just isn’t enough “wow” factor for a recommendation.
Since we were in an italian-styled restaurant, we decided to try Jamie Oliver’s take on pasta. While we were at it, we decided to try a funny-shaped pasta – Meatball Pappardelle ($14). Meatball Pappardelle has beef & pork meatballs with wiggly pappardelle, tomatoes, garlic, red wine & herby breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs were served separately and you’ll be invited by the waiting staff to mix it into the pasta. The interesting thing about this dish is the wiggly pappardelle. When we first laid eyes on it, it really resembled the tentacles of the octopus. But the cool thing about the wiggly pappardelle is that it traps the sauces within the gaps of the pasta, allowing each mouth to burst with the flavours of the tomato-based sauce. Meatballs were also tender when the dish first arrived. But after a couple of minutes, it became a little tougher and drier on the inside. All in all, we think that the meatball pappardelle was really good and comparable to the best tomato-based pasta we’ve had at Fior d’Italia – America’s Oldest Italian Restaurant.
Jamie’s Italian Singapore Desserts
For desserts, we went with the Gelato ($10.50) and the Epic Brownie ($11.50). For the Gelato, you can have the option of 3 scoops of ice cream served with any two of these toppings: Smashed honeycomb, Crushed nuts & seeds, Fruit compote or Butterscotch sauce. We chose salted caramel, vanilla and strawberry, topped with crushed nuts & seeds and smashed honeycomb. Our favourite was the vanilla flavour but for $10.50 it was too pricey. On the other hand, we’d recommend the Epic Brownie. Each mouthful was so rich with chocolate that it tasted sinfully awesome! The choco-rich brownie was balanced with the amaretto ice cream & caramelised amaretti popcorn. Definitely one of the richest choco brownie we’ve had.
We got a sneak at the lemon meringue cheesecake when it was served to other tables. Looked really good 😉

Is Jamie’s Italian Singapore worth a visit?
For ala carte, the menu was indeed pricey. All in all, the above came to about $80 (WHAT?!). Still, the taste of each dish was really good and by the time we were done, we were exceptionally full as well. For a better deal, there’s a “Jamie’s Sharing Feast for 2” which costs $138. The feast includes antipasti, 3 mains, dessert plank as well as coffee and tea. This feast allows you to try the recommended items on menu at a better price.
All in all, we think that Jamie’s Italian Singapore is definitely worth a visit. But be prepared to “mend” your pockets after the meal!

Riverview Hotel Sunday Brunch @ River Garden Coffee House
Riverview Hotel’s Sunday Brunch was where we enjoyed a leisurely Sunday afternoon with our family. We chose the Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel’s River Garden because
1. Selection of Food. The Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel has a wide variety of cuisine available. Beside the usual international buffet, there would be a “twist” at each promotion of Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel. During our last visit to Riverview Hotel’s Sunday Brunch, it was a BBQ and Beer Brunch which included the popular Erdinger Beer. This time, the promotion included free flow of moscato or prosecco as well as freshly shucked oysters!

2. Location. The River Garden Coffee House has a central location by the Singapore River. After your meal, you can continue to have drinks by the river (al fresco style) and watch people strolling/jogging along the river. Kids would be playing and boats passing by as well. Accompanied by your family as everyone enjoys this view? Priceless.

What we had at the Riverview Hotel Sunday Brunch
According to our nephew (the one who brought you this awesome review of Harris Hotel Batam), “everything is so good!”. He was spot on!
The prawns were fresh and succulent while the snow crab was sweet and delicious. Oysters were freshly shucked and were perfect with a tinge of lemon and tobasco! You can see how huge and fresh the oysters were. Comparable to the $100++ Sunday Brunches that we’ve tried. The only difference is that they only have 1 choice of oysters. But one good variety is enough to get us hooked 🙂 The minus for seafood was that the chili crabs were not fresh. In local terms, “nua nua” (meaning soft). Not a good description for crabs and prawns.
Another plus to this Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel is the durian pengat! This we did not notice at our last visit. Again, this durian pengat is comparable to the famous durian pengat at Swissotel Merchant Court’s Ellenborough Market Cafe – with all the edible bits of the durian. So good, that we had 2 bowls full – each.
Lastly, we sneaked a peek at the choice of moscato and prosecco at the Sunday Brunch. We realised that the River Garden Coffee House did not scrimp on their selection and had the Cascine Prosecco and Brown Brothers Moscato on their list. We’ve enjoyed several champagne brunches and we realised that the Cascine Prosecco has a relatively close taste to some selection of champagnes. Hence, if you’re not really into differentiating between champagnes and prosecco, the Sunday Brunch at Riverview Hotel is definitely a great buffet at a great price!

However, as budget conscious Singaporeans, we’d definitely visit the Riverview Hotel Sunday Brunch for its quality, variety, fresh oysters and great selection of moscato and prosecco!

Would we go back to Common Man Coffee Roasters again?
Common Man Coffee Roasters located at 22 Martin Road (walking distance from Boat Quay) is a new cafe that serves up gourmet breakfast and coffee.
Common Man Coffee Roasters is actually quite an “ATAS” (high class) cafe. The setting is quite elegant and classy yet there remains a casual feel to it.
As you can see from the price, the gourmet breakfasts cost in excess of $20. The eggs benedict we tried costs $24. Well, the real question is…is it worth it?
The organic eggs benedict has the following description
“Tender braised ox cheeks, 2 poached organic eggs with chive hollandaise with artisanal sourdough toast”
Sounds good? In fact it tastes better than it sounds. The ox cheeks was indeed tender and the spices have been infused into the meat. The eggs were very professionally prepared. When you break into the yolk, it oozes creamily (yes an odd word for yolks but it does) unto the toast. The sourdough toast gives an unique spin with its soury taste and crisp outer layer. Together the egg,toast,ox cheek fuses into one magical taste. Simply divine.
On the other hand, we couldnt really appreciate the gourmet cappuccino. To us, it was a little bitter and slightly acidic. We also ordered the Churros…
The Churros again were quite expensive. $12 for 5 sticks! But it was good. The outer later was lightly dusted with sugar and crispy on the initial bite. But as you chew on, the texture quickly turns to a soft chewy texture. With the chocolate dip, the churros tasted especially shiok.
Herein lies the problem, all this “divine” and “shiok” tastes come at a price and the total damage was…
We had tried to save by ordering one main and one coffee. But the price was already close to $50.
The Verdict
Our verdict? The eggs benedict was really unlike any eggs benedict we have tried. The sourdough toast made the difference and the churros was good. But for the price, you will really need to think twice.
We think that it would be good to visit just once, just to know how delicious simple and fresh ingredients can come together to create that unbelievably good taste. Otherwise, for the price, it would be unlikely that we’ll come back again.
Isn’t it ironic that the cafe is named “Common Man…” when the common man will really have to dig deep to eat here…

Why You Cant Help Going Back to Sakae Sushi’s “All You Can Eat” Premium Buffet?
Over the past week, we ate at Sakae Sushi’s All You Can Eat Premium Buffet. There’s something about buffet that makes us wants to go back again eventhough we know its not good for us, causes us to overeat, resulting in large tummies.
BUT we still go back nonetheless.
So what is it exactly about buffets that attract us so much? We think its a combination of these factors…
Price. When the price is optimal (notice that I did not use “cheap” because buffets aren’t exactly cheap), it brings out the kiasu Singaporean in me that says “Wah, this is damned hua!” (worth it).
The concept of “free-flow” and “all-you-can-eat”. This concept plays on the mind that you pay a fixed price but have unlimited supply of food. But if you really think about it, there is a limit. Whether you can stomach or not, is another issue altogether.
3 hours of dining. For gatherings, buffets are a great option. In addition to the wide variety of food (which means you do not have to adjourn after dinner for drinks or desserts), you can stay at that place through the duration of the buffet hours which usually is about 3 to 4 hours without feeling pai seh about the need to order more.
And so we digress from our sushi buffet frenzy. (The above is written to reduce our guilt for visiting buffets in the future! :))
What you can expect at Sakae Sushi’s “Eat All You Want” Premium Buffet
The Sakae Sushi Premium Buffet allows you to have ALL THE RED & PINK PLATES you want (compared to 1 red and 1 pink for the normal sushi buffet). In addition, you get to have endless supply (which now you know is not true) of sashimi and teriyaki meats. So here are only some of what we ate that fateful day…

Conclusion
Seriously speaking, there are much better sushi joints around. But when the 3 factors above come together, it is hard not to give Sakae Sushi’s Premium Buffet a long and hard consideration.
The worst part is, knowing the factors above, somehow, we will still be back at Sakae (help!) – unless you guys have some other better recommendations? Tell us (and save us) in the comments section below!
Great Eastern Restaurant Chinatown San Francisco : Even Obama visits it!
We were introduced to Great Eastern Restaurant while we were shopping in Chinatown San Francisco. What we ate at Great Eastern Restaurant Chinatown San Francisco
The beef ball was taong and chewy yet tender and flavourful. Comparable to that of Tim Ho Wan. The other thing that you should try is the rice noodle roll with char siew. Looooooved the fatty bits with the shiok texture of the rice noodle roll.
The sauce was also not too salty, just nice 🙂 Try not to be too adventurous and steer away from the pan fried pau which had too much flour.
Conclusion
All in all, if you ask me where to eat in Chinatown San Francisco, I would say that Great Eastern Restaurant is a great place to visit for its dim sum. Seeing the number of locals visiting, you’d probably guess that the food is good and the price is reasonable. Even Obama visits…

On our first night in Vancouver Washington, we originally wanted to visit McMenamins because of its brews. However, when we told by our concierge at Hilton Vancouver, that the service was not so good and the food was not fantastic either. Instead, we were recommended to visit Lapellah or Beaches.
We actually visited Lapellah first but as it was Christmas Eve, it closed at about 4pm. So we headed off to Beaches which opened till 630pm that evening.
What to eat and drink at Beaches Restaurant and Bar
Although we did not make reservations that evening, we were thankfully able to quickly have a seat eventhough the restaurant was almost full. Seemed like we took the 2nd last table (table beside us was soon taken up as well). After browsing through the menu, we decided to go for the honey crisp apple wheat cider and Coor’s Light first…
Kate chose the Shock Top Honey Crisp Apple Wheat while I had the Coors Light (to lighten the guilt since we’re having the “Guilty Burger”). Turns out that the crisp apple wheat cider was an excellent choice. Our waiter also told us that he preferred this version of the apple cider because it was not too sweet and had a soothing after taste – totally enjoyed it. For a dollar more, you should go for the cider as well 😉
Next, we decided on the food. We spared no expense as we were from thousands of miles away and we’re definitely gonna get some good food this evening. So we went for the Guilty Burger and the Baby Back Rib
The Guilty Burger really makes you guilty. It is just a monster of a burger! There’s pulled pork, grilled beef (seriously? 2 different heavy meats in a burger?!), loaded with cheese, eggs and veges. The part we love about the burger is its grilled beef. It was tender and had a flavourful smoky taste to it.
We noticed how the chefs do the burger patties. They would flip them and place sort of like a lid over it, allowing it to simmer with its own flavours, locking the juices in. That explains the tender, juicy bit of the grilled beef.
But the highlight has got to be the baby back rib. Probably the best ribs we’ve had. BETTER THAN CAFE CARTEL’S St. Louis’ Pork Ribs. It’s true. The meat literally FALLS OFF the bones just with a gentle flick. The smoky caramelised bits and lightly sweetened (not too sweet kind) BBQ sauce topped off this dish.
Did we mention, it’s probably the best ribs we’ve ever had?

Red Lobster….FINALLY!
The last time we were in USA, we kept seeing Red Lobster’s advertisement on TV but did not get the opportunity to try it! This time…hahaha (sinister laugh for the lobsters) we finally got to savour some fresh seafood from Red Lobster!
What we had at Red Lobster Seafood Restaurant
For starters, we had the mussels and the salad…
So we had the mussels with butter garlic sauce and the signature salads. While choosing the dressings for the salad, we were given a choice of about 8 dressings to choose from. In the end, Tom chose the most unhealthy ones (ranch and blue cheese) while Kate initially had the idea of just going light with vinaigrette dressing. Unhealthy Tom decides!
As for the mussels, it was baked a little too dry and we don’t think the mussels were “fresh out of the tank” fresh, though some of the mussels still tasted good. The other thing we didn’t like about this starter was that the bread was really salty! Have some drinks on hand to curb the overpowering toasted salty bread!
As for our mains, we went for one of the signature seafood combos – the Wood Grilled Lobster Shrimp and Scallop. Recommended by our waitress, we decided on it since there was “lobster” in it. Can’t go to Red Lobster and not have lobsters right?
Turns out that the recommendation was spot on! Every single one of the seafood on this plate was fresh! The lobster and shrimp was succulent and firm, yet crunchy and bouncy on the bite. Same goes for the scallop and the taste was sweet and natural – YUM!
Since it was the holiday season, we went for one of the holiday treats – Pumpkin Pie in a Jar. We didn’t really enjoy this dessert simply it was too overpowering. Overpowered by the cinnamon, whipped cream and much too sweet for our liking. Didn’t really taste the pumpkin as well. Sad…

All in all, we were happy that we finally got to eat at Red Lobster. The mains were really good but the rest of the dishes were sort of disappointing. If you ask us, we’d probably not return to Red Lobster again. But as for its neighbour – Olive Garden, we’ll definitely go try the other dishes when we return to USA.
Ipar’s: Authentic Spanish Restaurant
From the road junction of our hotel, we can see a low building with a banner that says it is an authentic spanish restaurant. We were glad to find out that it opens at 10am as that would mean we can squeeze in a early lunch because we have to be at the airport by 12pm to catch our flight back to Singapore.

We love everything about Ipar’s! The decoration in the cosy restaurant, the friendly waitress, the delicious food (the garlic bread! Have we mentioned how much we love garlic because of this trip? Hehe.) and the reasonable price.
Although we were quite full from breakfast, we still ordered starters, mains and a carafe of sangria. As with typical KS Singaporeans, we wanted to make the most out of this trip 🙂
What we ate at Ipar’s Spanish Restaurant Cebu
Initially, we wanted to try out the roasted pork so that we can compare to the one we tried at Serenity Spanish Bar and Restaurant in Singapore. However, due to the time required to prepare it (at least an hour), we did not have enough time to wait due to our impending flight. We even tried to ask if the wait could be half an hour instead of an hour. But due to the emphasis on the quality of the food, the waitress was quite insistent on saying no to our request. Hence, we settled for the above choices. Still, the food took a while to come, which is why we’re glad that we chose these food instead.
The churizo was a little salty. Good thing that we ordered the garlic bread to even out the saltish taste. As for the garlic bread, you usually have the spreads at pizza hut for their garlic bread? Not so at Ipar’s, you can see actual bits of garlic on the bread and there was a nice crunch with every bit. Like this version compared to Pizza Hut’s.
For the pork chop and the fish, they were both good. Especially the pork chop. Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The fish was good but because of its quantity and the fact that we already had breakfast, it became a little jerlat towards the end. That’s where your sangria comes into the picture. It refreshes your taste buds and provides a great compliment to the dishes as well.

We were sooooooooooo full when we went back to the hotel to get our luggage and checked out. But we did not at all regret having this meal 🙂

Breakfast at Bo’s Coffee: One of Philippines’ top specialty homegrown coffee shop
Kate noticed Bo’s Coffee striking logo in the streets of Cebu and decided that we should try the coffee and food there. There is one branch near City Suites Ramos Tower so that was what we had for breakfast on our last day in Cebu. Established in Cebu in 1996, Bo’s Coffee was founded by coffee enthusiast and entrepreneur Steve Benitez. The deco in Bo’s Coffee is warm and inviting; and the selection of food was also fairly extensive. We took some time to decide what to have for breakfast. We were also tempted by the cakes and pastries but unfortunately we were too full after our mains 🙁

Drip Coffee (10 pesos with any order of mains), Mushroom and Cheese Omelette with Toast (150 pesos) & Corned beef with scrambled eggs and pancake (175 pesos)
It was definitely a great place to enjoy coffee and pastries while people-watch as the locals make their way to work and the students heading off to school.

According to locals (including our driver Long), CnT Lechon is arguably one of the best Lechon in the whole of Cebu. When you even mention Lechon, everyone will point you here…
For us, it was actually quite surprising to see only ladies at this joint. Have you seen how big the pigs are? They actually start with whole pigs and chopping them up according to the weight that customers want…check out this video of the strong women chopping up the lechon! In the video you may also notice this rather impatient guy standing in front of us whose head kept popping up because he wants to know if his food is ready! 🙂
We decided to go for the half kg (for only 200 pesos – $6 SGD!) for the 3 of us to share (including our driver Long). Not too much else we would have to run many hours on the treadmill to burn off the fats! Worst of all, we may have to rename our site to 2fatbears.com! Haha!
And here’s our half kg of lechon!
As the caption says, the skin was so crispy! It’s actually Tom’s favourite part. Crispy and slightly saltish, goes really well with plain rice and a dash of the sauce provided. The meat was also tender and juicy. It was good. However, not the best for us. The best pig? If you’re referring to pork knuckle, it has got to be the pork knuckle from Hofbrauhaus Munich. As for roasted suckling pig, the one at Serenity tops our list.
Nonetheless, for the value and quality, it is still a must try when you’re in Cebu!
What else to eat at CnT Lechon
In addition to the lechon, we also had mixed vegetables (30 pesos per portion) and fresh lumpia (12 pesos each)
The lumpia is a little like our popiah in Singapore. Vegetables wrapped in a fresh flour based sheet. Not too bad.

CnT Lechon is located at V. Rama Ave, Cebu City and its opening hours are from 8am to 6pm. Be there early as the lechon often gets sold out by mid-afternoon!

The sun rises fairly early in Cebu and we were up by 6am. After washing up, we strolled around the neighbourhood to look for breakfast. We wanted something local but weren’t sure what to eat. Not far from Castle Peak Hotel, we chanced upon Alberto’s Pizza. The menu was decent and the price was reasonable. And although it was Alberto’s Pizza, we went for the local breakfasts instead! We choose the Hungarian and Cheese Krainer, each at 75 pesos (about $2!).

Each set came with a sunny-side up and garlic rice! Yum! However, the Hungarian sausage was a little too salty for our taste.

Golden Cowrie Restaurant – Best Filipino Restaurant Cebu
Touted as the best Filipino restaurant in Cebu, Golden Cowrie Native Restaurant embodies the pride in filipino cuisine and is one of our must-try when you visit Cebu (pronounced as SEE BOO). The funny thing was that although there was a Golden Cowrie Restaurant at Ayala Mall, we did not know about it at that time (so near and yet so far)! Therefore, we took a 10 minutes taxi ride from Ayala Mall to the Golden Cowrie Lahug @ Salinas Drive…
As we pulled up at Golden Cowrie, we were ushered by a security guard (meaning its a decent joint) who opened these big wooden doors for us to enter into the restaurant. The deco was nice, warm and inviting. Much like coming home. It has an alfresco dining area outside as well.
After being seated, our server Precious (see inset above), asked us politely if it was our first time here. She was friendly and patient in explaining the various local dishes (some of the dishes had Filipino names) while recommending some of the best sellers. Good service is always a great start to a meal isnt it?
What to eat at Golden Cowrie Restaurant
Precious then recommended for us to have the crispy pata (pork knuckle!!), squid in coco sauce, kang kong and shrimps with garlic. This was accompanied by garlic rice and free flow white rice! Oh, every order of normal rice is free flow. And you know what? We don’t usually eat that much white rice, but surprisingly, the rice was especially fragrant while the texture of grains full of goodness! No wonder even ladies pile up on the rice while eating at Golden Cowrie Restaurant! Yes, even Kate!

Guess what? EVERY DISH WAS GOOD!! The serving of the crispy pata was HUGE and when you take in a piece of meat together with the crispy skin, accompanied by the garlic rice? Simply SHIOK! Now we understand why many Filipinos enjoy garlic rice. It’s not only the fried garlicky taste that attracts you. When mixed in, it gives a different mild crunchy texture with every mouth. Yum!
Served sizzling hot, the squid in coco sauce was fresh and succulent, not the rubbery kind but the Q type with a refreshing taste of spices and charred taste. With a little chili on the side (not too much cause their version is actually quite spicy), it was just a perfect combination with the fragrant white rice.
The kang kong and shrimps with garlic also accompanied the rice really well. After typing for the last few paragraphs, we’re starting to wonder if dishes revolve around the rice? Because they complemented each other oh oh oh so well! Haven’t had this much rice in such a long time – SERIOUSLY!
Okok, here comes the best part. Our total damage? Only 824 pesos (including drinks) which is about $25 SGD!! This is less than a third of what you would have paid at a zi char stall in Singapore!

A Classy Treat at Lei Garden International Finance Center Hong Kong!
Lei Garden is an atas Chinese restaurant that also has branches in Singapore and we were told to give it a try in Hong Kong because the price is about 30% lower. After trying out the Michelin-starred dim sum at Tim Ho Wan, we decided to continue with our “extravagant” ways with a classy treat at Lei Garden International Finance Center (IFC) Hong Kong!

Things to note while eating at Lei Garden Hong Kong
There are a few things to note when dining at Lei Garden.
1. Make a reservation or queue up early. There are usually alot of people wanting to dine at Lei Garden (so many rich people nowadays!). Therefore it is wise to either make a reservation or go early to avoid disappointment. In our case, we tried to make a reservation through our receptionist at Ibis Hotel Central Sheung Wan but we were told that they were fully booked that afternoon. Undeterred, we went straight to IFC hoping for a chance to dine in and we left our details at the entrance of the restaurant. Our patience paid off and we were able to be seated about 2 hours (11am to 1pm) from when we gave our details.
2. Know what you want to eat. As a Chinese saying goes, 慢工出细活, which means that slow work produces fine products. Therefore, to prevent your wait to be longer than it already is, know what you want to order before you enter (or at least have an idea). Lei Garden is famous for its double-boiled soup, dim sums as well as some high class superior chinese delicacies (which we cannot afford and so is not mentioned in this post)
2. Sit back relax and enjoy the class and magic of Lei Garden. Our impression of Lei Garden is not only that it is classy (individualised service at each table & the setting/ambience was really something else), the food was also innovative and out of the ordinary. For instance, we ordered the Business Set Lunch and expected something less classy…no…I mean have you seen pork dumplings served in this manner?

This dumpling was really interesting in that the skin was really Q and the mushrooms were bursting with flavours within! The pan fried pork dumpling (shown above) also stirred our interest in that not only was the “dangerous” to eat (beware of bursting juices!) but the ingenuity of serving it under a crispy rice paper topping was a first for us!

The only dish that did not live up to the mark was the double boiled soup. It could be because it was hyped up too much by our friends. But I think its mainly because our dad makes a mean pot of soup (be it bak kut teh, old cucumber or herbal chicken). Restaurant mah. Should be better than Daddy’s right? Nope, Daddy’s soup is better!
The king prawn was very fresh and the sauce was quite similar to a carbonara sauce of sorts. The cool thing was that we were actually quite impressed that a Chinese restaurant like Lei Garden can produce such a good blend of fusion food (a bit of east meets west kinda thing going on here). Oh, there was a braised garoupa fillet in hot pot which was REALLY great! The fish was fresh and generously covered in a spring onion, ginger sauce, served over a sizzling hot pot. In fact, a lack of photo here can attest to its taste (if you know what I mean ;))
Again, one of the best roasted duck we’ve tasted. The skin was of the duck was thin and fat (in both sense of the word). The more you chew on it, the better the juices mix with the meat as they dance to a symphony of harmony in your mouth! Not to mention, the presentation was great as well!
A refreshing taste. Yet another surprise here in that the bean curd skin was an unexpectedly good combination with the greens and mushroom. The more you eat, the better it tastes!
We’ve had very bad experiences with lobster based soups such as the lobster bisque and it was with caution that we took this dish. However, all our fears were allayed with the first mouth where the soup was hot and rich in fresh lobster flavours. The hand pulled noodles were slurpalicious. Simply put, the dish was out in seconds. Yum!
We also ordered the char siew pau (39 HKD) from the dim sum menu.
This char siew bao is another work of art. Besides the usual fluffy outer layer of the bun, the inside was different! Not the usual sweet char siew but the ginger onion char siew fillings. You will also see that the pork is sliced, unlike the usual diced version. Here you can taste the meat and the fattiness together.

To round up this post, we would say that the meal was classy yet surprisingly. After the pork dumpling, we were actually eagerly anticipating each dish and imagining how they would be presented. Both a visual and tasty treat this was at Lei Garden International Finance Center Hong Kong!

Step 1 : How to Queue at Tim Ho Wan Hong Kong
First of all, you must know that THERE WILL BE A QUEUE OUTSIDE Tim Ho Wan. If you think that you can just waltz into THW, eat your dim sum and whizz out in 20 minutes, you could be the owner of Tim Ho Wan OR you just arrived in Asia and not know the ways and customs of Asians with regard to food.
Therefore, you must always go to Tim Ho Wan @ Mong Kok with a plan. The plan is therefore to go straight to the entrance, grab your queue number and head on to Ladies Street to do some shopping…
The reason is because the typical waiting time is about 45 minutes to 1 hour during meal times.
So Step 1 : Grab your queue number and head for shopping good times at Ladies Street!
Step 2 : What to order at Tim Ho Wan Hong Kong
For your first order, go for the “4 Heavenly Kings” – Steamed Egg Cake (香滑马来糕), Vermicelli Roll with Pig’s Liver(黄沙猪润肠), Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (酥皮叉烧包), Pan Fried Carrot Cake (香煎萝卜糕)
Tim Ho Wan’s Famous Baked Bun with BBQ Pork – 3 for only 17HKD!
Essentially, all the versions at THW Hong Kong tastes better than the Singapore version. The star of the show, the baked bun with BBQ was crisp on the outside, fluffy on the bite and flowing with BBQ (chinese style) flavours on the inside. Thrashing the Singapore version hands down.
Before trying the steamed egg cake at Tim Ho Wan Mong Kok, we never thought that sweet and savoury dim sums could be eaten together. They certainly can. Each bite was an education in the art of gourmet food altogether. The steamed egg cake was surprisingly good by itself. It’s like a brown sugar cake, not too sweet but superbly fluffy. The aroma of the brown sugar just permeates through your taste buds. Mmm…
The pan fried carrot cake or turnip cake was very aromatic. The fried mini shrimps (known affectionately as hei bi in Singapore) brought out the flavour of the turnip. Crisp on the outer layer and flavourful within. The texture of the turnip could also be felt with each bite – very much unlike factory-churned ones.
Instead of going for the pig’s liver vermicelli roll (chee cheong fun), we decided to go for the Beef version and we were thoroughly intrigued! The beef was SUPER tender – as though it has been pounded many times over. The roll was springy and taong (chewy or “Q” as they would call in Taiwan). Together, it was a perfect match!
So Step 2: Go straight for the “4 Heavenly Kings”, you wont go wrong with the Signatures
Step 3 : Order anything else you wish to savour at Tim Ho Wan Hong Kong
Maybe except the siew mai. We thought it was quite normal. The beef ball with beancurd skin on the other hand is a MUST TRY!
Beef Ball with Beancurd Skin – 16HKD @ Tim Ho Wan Hong Kong
Beef balls were oh so tender and Q! You could literally press against it and it would resume its shape! The sauce that is poured over it was not too salty and has a light tang to it. This added to the flavours of the beef balls. Yum!
So Step 3 : Order what catches your sight but just dont order the siew mai (eventhough you may be tempted to!)

Lan Fong Yuen Hong Kong : For a taste of traditional milk tea since 1952
Lan Fong Yuen is one of the most famous Hong Kong cafe for traditional milk tea. Since 1952, it has been serving up breakfast (including its famous pork buns) to generations of Hong Kongers. Since we were staying at Chung King Mansion (New China Yan Yan Hostel), we decided to drop by next door to Woodhouse where Lan Fong Yuen is located.

What to eat at Lan Fong Yuen
Lan Fong Yuen opens from 8am to 8pm daily and as expected, there was a queue outside even as early as 815am! The good news is that the queue actually moves quite quickly and we were promptly seated.
For those who have luggages (we had ours as we just checked out that morning) and strollers, you are not allowed to bring them in as the space within the cafe is actually quite limited.
This morning we tried the bo luo you, milk tea, coffee as well as the pork bun…
The milk tea was rich and aromatic, living up to its expectations. The bo luo you with its fresh slice of butter was also quite delicious. The slight let-down was the pork bun. Though tender, the taste was quite normal and the portion was really small. Didnt quite live up to the hype.
Nonetheless, there are many other choices on the menu should you decide not to try the pork bun. Like a typical Hong Kong cafe, it offers a variety of choices as well.

Frankly speaking, we’re quite sad that we have to do a post for this because it was with much anticipation that we searched, located and tried these foods. But for the benefit of our readers (not to fall prey to this recommendation), here are the 2 recommendations that we’ve tried…
Debunking 1 : Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Beef at Ho Hung Kee Congee and Noodle Shop
Reading the title of this recommendation, we should have known better. Ordering stir-fried rice noodles with beef at a congee and noodles (usually wanton noodle equivalent) isnt so smart eh? But still, we trusted the recommendation and this was what we got…
The fried beef noodles WAS SUPER OILY! Even from this picture, you could see that oil was dripping with each mouth. Dont get us wrong, we love fried foods and all but this? This was too much. Even as we cleared the top layer, the bottom layer closer to the plate had “puddles of oil”. The taste was not really up to mark, marred very much but the oiliness. The only saving grace was that the beef was tender. But at 79HKD, I would have expected more…
Debunking 2 : Wonton Noodle in Soup at Chee Kei
Wanton noodles at a wanton noodles should be good right? The noodles turned out to be quite disappointing and here’s why…
We ordered the wanton noodles with white fungus dessert and soyabean milk for 55 HKD. First of all, there was only 4 wantons and 1 prawn in each wanton. This was in stark contrast to the wanton mee at Mak Mun Kei. Overall, it had few wantons, less prawns and just a handful of noodles. Definitely not worth a visit.

You will notice that this particular shop is called Hai Xing Porridge Shop. It means that although it serves staples like toast and milk tea for breakfast, its signature is porridge! We ordered the boatsman congee and it was one of the best congee we’ve ever eaten!
Legend has it that in the past, to make a quick meal, fishermen or boatsman would throw rice and everything else they could find into a pot and let it simmer. The result is an enjoyable bowl of boatsman congee. This version has century eggs, pork, pork stomach, chicken, tendon, squid along with a really enjoyable milky taste!

Best Wanton Noodles in Hong Kong belongs to Mak Mun Kee?
Mak Mun Kee opens for lunch at only 12pm till 1230am. Kate and I were there slightly after opening hours and the restaurant was almost full! We took a quick glance at the menu and ordered the specialties here – the wanton and beef noodles!
According to its introduction, there is ONLY ONE BRANCH OF MAK MUN KEE IN HONG KONG AT PARKES STREET! We were sat close to the entrance of the shop and we were able to observe the skills of the chef. Steam was rising up as the chef tossed the noodles in the air. Before long, our noodles were served…
Let’s talk about the noodles first. One word. YEASTY! Kate and I dont really like the yeasty taste in most yellow noodles and this was one of the yeastiest noodles we’ve had. To be fair, we were having the dry version. Perhaps the soup version would be less yeasty? The texture on the hand was springy and chewy – what the Taiwanese would say : “Q!” The portion was also very generous.
In terms of taste, the beef brisket was a clear winner. The beef was tender, mixed with portions of tendons that left that savoury taste in your mouth, leaving you wanting for more….
Wantons on the other hand HAD 2 PRAWNS IN EACH WANTON!! 😮 Usually we will have minced pork with (sometimes half) a prawn in our wantons in Singapore. But this version had 2 huge and succulent prawns!
Overall, the beef brisket noodles is a “must-try” while if you’re going for wanton noodles, try the soup version and let us know how it is.

Hong Kong cafes in Hong Kong are not what you typically see in Singapore. In Singapore, you see classy Hong Kong cafes. They have themes and are well-renovated. Prices are EXPENSIVE as well!

However in Hong Kong, Hong Kong cafes are more like a way of life. At almost every corner you turn, there’s sure to be a friendly Hong Kong cafe nearby…
So on the 2nd morning of our trip in Hong Kong, we decided to pop by a Hong Kong cafe to have a typical Hong Konger breakfast. There are a few things that we noticed when we ate at Hong Kong cafes in Hong Kong.
1. Spoilt for choice. Somehow this humble HK cafe manages to serve up MANY types of food each day. For morning, they serve the typical noodles, toast, bun sets. But if you’re game enough (for breakfast), they do serve spaghetti, chicken chop, cutlets and more. This morning, we went for the typical Hong Kong breakfast – bo luo bun, spaghetti soup, toast and milk tea (a must-have in HK)…
The bo luo you (butter in bo luo bun – an oven toasted bun with mildly sweet crispy top coating) is a typical snack/breakfast mate. The milk tea is also a typical breakfast staple. But somehow, it tastes alot thicker in Hong Kong. Nicer but may be a be jerlat (too much) if you take more than 2 cups a day.
2. Old World Charm. When you enter a typical Hong Kong cafe, you will find that most exuberate a charm from yester years. Table arrangements, kitchen, waiters still reminds patrons of how it was like in the 80s to have a friendly breakfast at the local joint. Food choices may have increased in variety, but familiar tastes such as the toast, bo luo bun and of course the milk tea has “nostalgia” written all over it…
3. Fast service. Maybe a little too fast. The pace of living in Hong Kong has greatly risen in the past decade. In many restaurants, you will find that food is just meant to be energy for the body. You eat and you go. The humble Hong Kong cafe has not been able to avoid the brunt of this fast-paced development. Even in the most traditional HK cafe, waiters will circle around tables (like hyenas or vultures), swooping in when they spot an empty plate or when a patron has just finished the last sip of his milk tea. The glaring eyes of the waiters also beams on you should you so decide to enjoy your cup of coffee with the morning newspapers.

Yes, we’re also wondering why it’s called the Australian Dairy Company when IT IS ACTUALLY IN HONG KONG!! The Australian Dairy Company also known as 澳洲牛奶公司 in Chinese is sort of like a Hong Kong cafe (茶餐厅) which serves typical Hong Kong breakfast fare (think tea, toast and eggs).

But the reason for the queue?
is none other than the desserts!
What desserts to eat at Australian Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司
To be honest, we were actually heading to Mak Man Kee (wanton noodles place at Parke street) to find out its exact location the night before so that we would easily locate it during lunch the next day. BUT, as kiasu Singaporeans, we cant help but notice a long queue outside the Australian Dairy Company.
Then we saw that it had some pictures of desserts. We just had dinner, not a bad idea to have some desserts right? Little did we know that we stumbled upon one of the best dessert stalls in Hong Kong!
After queuing for 15 minutes (surprisingly short queue that evening – picture above is the queue the next day as we headed to Mak Man Kee!), we were promptly sat down. The menu was right before us but we still took some time to figure out the Chinese words on the menu. Thankfully, the aunty who sat beside us, saw that we were struggling and ordered the 2 main favourites for us!
The famous desserts at the Australian Dairy Company are the steamed egg white milk pudding (蛋白炖鲜奶) as well as the steamed almond egg pudding (杏汁炖蛋)…
The steamed egg white milk pudding (蛋白炖鲜奶) was shiok! I really think Hong Kongers are foodie genius! Would you have thought of combining egg white , milk and STEAM it?! I know I wouldnt. Yet the result is OH SO DELICIOUS!
The texture was soft and when it enters your mouth, it just melts and spreads. Ah… The taste was rich, flavourful and not too sweet. You can actually taste the egg white and milk all at the same time! Just so yummilicious!
The steamed almond egg pudding on the other hand had a stronger taste of the egg yolk. Again, from the business sense, the creation is a work of genius. You use the white and yolk separately. Create 2 desserts and have no wastage. Genius!
However, we liked the yellow less (not to be confused with yellow yellow – aka durian in the southeast asia region) and the white much more. The yellow had an overpowering yolk taste. For fans of egg yolk, this would be a favourite. But for Kate and I? Well…let’s just say that we managed to finish it.
Just one last comment, like most Hong Kong Cafe, the waiters act fast! So dont expect to leisurely enjoy your desserts cause they’ll be eyeing your bowl every step of the way! Once you’re done, you’re outta here!

Oh, there could be 2 long queues at Parke Street, the other at Mak Mun Kee. But you definitely wont miss it!

Celebration @ Serenity : Spanish Bar and Restaurant VivoCity!
Recently, we had a celebration at Serenity at VivoCity. It is a Spanish bar and restaurant, touted as having some of the best tapas (appetizers) in town. The fame of its suckling pigs and paella also preceded its name. Hence, we decided to have our small celebration there and also check out the food at this Spanish joint.

With the posters depicting various parts of Spain as well as the decorations that contributes to a relaxing atmosphere, Serenity gave us quite a good first impression. With prompt service, we were quickly tucked to a cozy corner of the restaurant where we could have our mini celebration. (Do note that this is not an advertorial and we did not inform the management about the celebration)
What to drink at Serenity Spanish Bar and Restaurant
They say (or the menu says) that a visit to Serenity is never complete unless you have tried its Sangrias. So we believe and ordered 3 Sangrias…
Classic Red Sangria Serenity – (Red Wine, Gin, Brandy, Orange Liquor, Juices, Lemonade)
Sangria Pantera Rosa @ Serenity Spanish Bar and Restaurant – (Red Wine, Raspberry Schnapps, Mixed Berries, Mint, Tonic)
Sangria De Coco – (White Wine, Malibu, Pineapple Juice)
Well, the verdict was not conclusive. Everyone had their own favourites. I liked mum’s Sangria De Coco while Kate loved the Classic Red. Bro enjoyed the Pantera Rosa. From another perspective, the conclusion is that there’s really a sangria suited for everyone! 🙂
What to eat at Serenity Spanish Bar and Restaurant
Deep Fried Spanish style cod fish cake
For tapas, we tried the cod fish cake. It was not that good. After our crab cakes lesson from USA, we should have avoided “seafood cakes” altogether. Though the crust was crispy, the insides did not do justice to the cod. Well, we’ll leave it as that. Next came the mains…
Paella Valenciana – (Saffron, chicken, Spanish chorizo, tiger prawns, squid, half shell mussels, rice)
1/2 Roasted Suckling Pig
Pollo con samfaina – (Roasted spring chicken stuffed with Spanish style vegetable rice)
Do note that the Paella and Roasted Suckling Pig are hot favourites at Serenity and will take about 30 mins to 1 hour of preparation time (depending on the crowd). Hence, if you’re ordering it, sit down, order these before looking at the rest of the mains or tapas.
Paella. Our favourite has got to be the Paella. Its said that the secret lies in the grains and Serenity uses the Boomba which is able to absorb flavours up to three times as much as normal grain. This move proved to be wise. The Paella was SOOOOOOOOOO flavourful. All the flavours of the ingredients were fused into the tiny grains and bursts forth as you take each mouthful of it. The only comment is that although the ingredients (prawns, mussels) were fresh, the manner of preparation dried them a little too much.
Roasted Suckling Pig. The roasted suckling pig proved to be a favourite as well. At $98++ it had better be good. And it was. The skin was light and crispy. The meat was tender, almost falling off the bones. The combination of the crispy skin and flavourful tender meat? Yummilicious!
In terms of flavour, the roasted chicken was ok. But the rice that went along with it was actually quite good. A little bit sticky but rich in flavours. Perhaps thats where all the flavours of the chicken went to…
Conclusion
The total bill came up to $300+ for 5 people. A little on the ex side. But the authentic Spanish taste did tilt the balance. I mean if you fly 5 people to Valencia to taste the Paella, it would have cost a few thousand bucks right? Hence, for the authentic taste and refreshingly good Sangrias, we give it a thumbs up.
But not too often, else it might just burn a hole in your pocket!

If this is your first time eating at Tim Ho Wan, do note that the waiting time can be quite long. As we were eating as a family and needed 8 seats, the staff needed time to re-arrange the seats and wait for patrons to finish up as well. Hence, our total waiting time was close to 2 hours.
HOWEVER, if you are eating as a couple, it is much easier to arrange seats for you. As we were waiting, many couples went ahead of us. Hence, the waiting time for couples is about 30 minutes.
Once you reach the seats in front of the restaurant, you would be given the order chit to have a look at the menu so that you can place orders as soon as you’re seated.

What to order at Tim Ho Wan Dim Sum Restaurant
If you have no idea what to order at Tim Ho Wan, you definitely wont go wrong with the four heavenly kings (四大天王)- Steamed Egg Cake (香滑马来糕), Vermicelli Roll with Pig’s Liver(黄沙猪润肠), Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (酥皮叉烧包), Pan Fried Carrot Cake (香煎萝卜糕)。。。

The carrot cake was flavourful, slightly crisp on the outside and layered on the inside with the textures felt as you go in for your first bite.
Steamed Egg Cake (香滑马来糕) from Tim Ho Wan
The steamed egg cake has always been the surprise for us (we’ve tried the original Tim Ho Wan in Mong Kok, Hong Kong some time back). This is because it is something sweet! Try having something sweet while you’re having the savoury dim sums. Doesnt sound quite right does it? But the egg cake somehow blends in seemlessly with its mild sweetness, light fluffy texture and fragrant brown sugar taste. Somehow it goes really well with the dim sums at Tim Ho Wan…
Baked Bun with BBQ Pork (酥皮叉烧包)@ Tim Ho Wan
The char siew bao as always been the highlight of Tim Ho Wan. So much so that each person is limited to 1 order of the famous dim sum! Unlike all other buns you’ve ever eaten, it is REALLY crispy on the outside and bursting with char siew flavours on the inside! An ingenious creation indeed. Still remember our first bite at Tim Ho Wan Mong Kok…ahh…
Oh, somehow the Singapore version of the baked bun with BBQ pork fares slightly poorer compared to its HK counterpart. Especially the char siew portion. This version is slightly on the sweet side while the one in HK is on the “Oh” side (“Oh” refers to “Oh, this is really good!”)
We also tried several other dim sums such as
Prawn Dumpling (晶莹鲜虾饺)
Garlic Mushroom Spinach Dumpling (金蒜香菇菠菜饺)
You wont miss much if you do not try these 2. But do try the following (plus beef ball – unfortunately we tucked in too fast and forgot to take photo of it :p)…
Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce (鼓汁蒸凤饺)
Beancurd Skin Roll with Pork and Shrimp (鲜竹卷)
Spring Roll with Crab Meat (螃蟹春卷)
The beancurd skin roll, beef ball and spring roll are the next few dim sums that you must try. The meats of the beancurd skin roll and beef ball are fresh, succulent and sort of dances around in your mouth (partly also because its hot) but still, it was yummy!
The spring roll had a sweet, seafood taste to its fillings. Something that you dont quite usually get with spring rolls (usually vege inside right?)
However, if you have space for only 1 other dish, you MUST ORDER the Tonic Medlar & Osmanthus Cake (杞子桂花糕)

Again, we tucked in ferociously before we took this photo (yes, this is almost the remains of the carcass). The taste was simply REFRESHING! Light refreshing sweetness with lasting tastes of the medlar and osmanthus….did we mention that it was refreshing?
You would definitely enjoy your trip to Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura. Even our mum who is quite a connoisseur herself (high tea / buffet queen) enjoyed the dim sum at Tim Ho Wan! Hence, we would definitely say it’s worth the wait to eat at Tim Ho Wan (添好运)!

If you’re wondering what’s there to do in Warsaw? Fret no more! Try the E. Wedel Cafe! Located at 8 Szpitalna Street in Warsaw, the Wedel cafe is today still located at its original location and Jan Wedel (the last “Wedel” owner) was then known as the “Willy Wonka” of Poland!
As the oldest chocalatier in the whole of Poland, Wedel is of course known for its chocolates! It is today quite an atas (high class) place to chill out and have a nice leisurely afternoon with your friends. Check out the high class setting of Wedel cafe!
The cool thing about Wedel cafe is that eventhough it is quite high class, the prices are actually still pretty much affordable. Cheaper than your starbucks coffee! 😮 We had a “Traditional Chocolate” which is made of rich melted original chocolate, for only 12zl!! Just 1 is good to share because of its richness. You may feel jerlat if you have 1 whole cup to yourself. But then again, it’s chocolate right? Chocolates are scientifically proven to help the brain release endorphins. Therefore you’ll feel happier…

If it’s your first time in Poland and you’re wondering what to eat in Warsaw Poland, you definitely wont go wrong with pierogi or the humble dumpling!
What to eat in Warsaw Poland?
Zapiecek is actually a franchise that has many outlets Warsaw. The food there is not too bad, well-priced and quite traditional. If you’re not sure where to go, this place is a good start. But of course, for excellent, top notch, best polish food, you’ve got to go to Folk Gospoda!
The interior of the restaurant is quite traditionally decorated. The main theme was wood which brought about a homely traditional feel. The wall was also written with different translations and fonts of the word “dumpling” which seems to suggest that their dumplings are quite good…
There were so many types of dumplings available on the menu and after browsing for quite a while (the waitress came back to us twice), we finally decided upon the Spelt Pierogi and the Hungarian Pancake!
We chose the spelt pierogi cause of its unique ingredients of spinach and cream cheese. Usually dumplings come with meat. This is a bit different. Plus it’s recommended! The cheese was mild (much like a sauce) and went quite well with the spinach filling.
The Hungarian pancake on the other hand was REALLY filling! The starchy pancake and the meaty chunks made us really really full after the meal. The sauce was meaty with a slight tomato base so though we were quite full, it did not make us feel jerlat (too sick of it).
The meal ended with a nice glass of Sangria. Great choice by Kate. 700ml for $6SGD! 😮

Folk Gospoda : Simply the Best Polish Restaurant in Warsaw!
Folk Gospoda is simply the best polish restaurant in Warsaw! This restaurant is excellent in taste, has great service and has prices that are hard to beat (especially for its set lunches). So good, that we visited it twice in a matter of days!
On our first night there, we were pleasantly surprised by the ambience. A cozy, homely feel accomplished with the wood finishes…
On our first visit to Folk Gospoda, we ordered the traditional polish fare of smoked duck and meat dumplings!
Both dishes were superb! The smoked duck was tender and the skin was crisp. The raspberry sauce complemented the smokey full flavoured duck. The dish was also served with sauerkraut as well as the potato dumpling which was chewy but oh so yummy!
On the other hand, the dumpling tasted really traditional (slight gamey taste) with bacon bits and pine nuts that really made the taste outstanding. The seasoning of the meat was not too salty, well balanced to bring out the flavours of the meat. Yum yum!
We decided to visit Folk Gospoda again because we heard about the set lunches which included soup, mains and desserts for just 19zl! (Thats $7.50SGD!). The other reason was because we simply had to try the honey-glazed pork knuckle which we saw on the menu on our last visit! Sounded so enticing! Again, we thoroughly enjoyed this visit…
The set lunch came with the mains of the pork skewer with fries and it was well worth the price. Although the meat was a wee bit tough, the taste more than made up for it. The smokey, BBQ, kebab-like taste was quite enjoyable. The light hot sauce helped to tingle the taste buds as well.
Finally, the highlight that we were waiting for…the Honey Glazed Pork Knuckle! Just by looking at the picture, you must be wanting to sink your teeth into it right? Well, it was REALLY juicy and tender! The skin was lightly sweetened by the honey and the meat, OH SO TENDER! The combination coupled with some light mustard was just perfect. Ma ma mia! Speaking of pork knuckles, we would still rank the Hof Brauhaus pork knuckle 1st. But this one at Folk Gospoda comes in a really close 2nd!
We ended off the meal with the fruit creampie. Seemed to us like a traditional dish. The cream was light and fresh. Tasted as though the cream was freshly blended and frothed before bringing up to you. The total bill came up to 70zl and it was really well worth it!

You wont miss it because you will notice a large mural on the wall that says “Folk Gospoda” and a logo of a peacock (we’re guessing here). Because we stayed at the Platinum Residences (beside Hilton Warsaw), it was just a short walk away.

As we travelled about in Berlin, we came across many MANY currywurst shops and again MANY say that they’re the ORIGINAL Berliner Currywurst. So to put all this hype to rest, Kate and I investigated the Berliner Currywurst…
So we took out our 1.5euros and ordered the currywurst at this particular shop. It took all of 1 minute before the owner came out from his kitchen and served us this piping hot wurst…
The thing is, there’s really nothing to shout about here. The reddish sauce is really a tomato based sauce poured over the wurst. The yellowish curry powder sprinkled on the top was the only thing “curry” about the wurst.
What salvaged this dish was that it was cold (about 10 degrees in the morning) and that the wurst was piping hot. Taste though, was quite normal really.
So. To put all the hype about Berlin Curry Wurst to rest, there is really nothing to shout about here. Just good old wurst in the cover of another mildly flavoured sauce.
A blessing in disguise? You decide!

Why visit Hofbrauhaus Munich?
If you are visiting Munich but happen to miss the Oktoberfest, no worries. The Hofbrauhaus is a restaurant in the heart of Munich where the atmosphere of the Oktoberfest happens every night!
There are 2 portions to Hofbrauhaus, namely the restaurant area…
as well as the “happening fest” area / open air area
There is a performance area where live Oktoberfest music is played nightly at the fest area. Hence, if you missed the Oktoberfest proper, Hofbrauhaus is definitely one of the places you must go to catch up on the atmosphere of the festivals.
What to eat & drink at Hofbrauhaus am Platzl Munich
For drinks, you can choose from the usual wheat beers (at about 4euros for 0.5litres) such as light, dark or the Oktoberfest brew (only during Oktoberfest period) specially brewed for the Oktoberfests.
But the highlight of the menu has got to be pork knuckle (or Schwein Haxe)!
First and foremost, the skin was crispy yet not the overly crispy type where you feel it is almost burnt. The fatty bits was not too fatty but just nice, allowing you to bite off. There are some versions where the fatty bits are not well done and you will find it very hard to chew off.
The meat itself was flavourful and juicy, infused with the herb taste. If you take 1 mouth of the crispy skin, fatty bit and flavourful meat, it would just be “Ah….”
One word for the pork knuckle – Yummilicious! (That’s when you need to combine yummy and delicious into one word)
And it really was…
The ambience inside the restaurant was also fantastic. We were seated at one corner of the restaurant with views out to the pathway outside the restaurant…
In addition, the tables we were seated at were traditional, made out of wood and even had supports for our feet. The service was also great. The waiter took care to speak to us in good English and was meticulous in his service. Eventhough we only ordered one portion of the pork knuckle to share, he automatically got an extra plate for us and often checked back with us from time to time to ensure that we were really well taken care of.
All in all, our experience at Hofbrauhaus was nothing short of excellent. And you would think that the bill would run sky high? Nope. We only spent 20.20Euros that evening and enjoyed a wonderful meal with excellent service at that!

食客 Ssikkek The Restaurant Guest Korean BBQ and Grill : Great Quality Food!
食客 also known as ” The Restaurant Guest” is a Korean BBQ and Grill franchise. Ssikkek Restaurant has several outlets across Singapore in venues such as United Square, Bras Basah as well as this outlet at North Bridge Road!
Ssikkek Restaurant aka The Restaurant Guest @ North Bridge Road
We arrived at this Ssikkek outlet near Chinatown at about 6:30pm and as you can see from the picture, there was already a crowd outside the restaurant! As recommended by many blogs (including this Singapore Travel Blog), you should always make a reservation prior to visit. We could see from the waiting list that the queue number had already reach about 40 people. Thankfully, we made the reservations and we were seated promptly in less than 5 minutes!
What to eat at Ssikkek Korean BBQ and Grill Restaurant
Actually, we did not know what to eat at Ssikkek. We just saw the queue and made it a point to visit. But as they say, if you see a queue, join it! (eventhough sometimes as Singaporeans, you may not know exactly what you’re queuing for, case in point…)
And we were pleasantly surprised…
Variety of Meats including pork collar, pork belly, bacon and beef steaks
The first thing we noticed at the Restaurant Guest is that there is a good variety of meats. Pork collar, pork belly, bacon, beef steaks, marinated chicken and beef were all available. Other than the meats, there is also a small selection of vegetables, squid, prawns and korean dishes such as kim chi, glass noodles and pancakes…
A few choices of Korean cooked food available
Soft drinks, korean tea as well as orange juice are available as well. Kate made a concoction of sprite with orange which tasted like fizzy orange – not bad at all! The star of the show is of course the meats…
Best meats at Ssikkek Korean Restaurant

We’ve tried almost all the meats at Ssikkek Korean Restaurant and we must say that although the variety is not that many, the quality more than made up for it. If you prefer to have some fatty bits in your lettuce wrap (which we ate 3 platefuls of to “act healthy” – who are we kidding right?), go for the pork belly. Otherwise, we recommend the pork collar.
It is quite unusual for pork meats to have white bits in the grains of the meat much akin to Kobe beef. But the pork collar at Ssikkek is one of the best korean grills we’ve had. The meat was tender, juicy (even after the BBQ which usually removes moisture) and had a fresh bite to it. Dipped in some reddish korean BBQ sauce, some kim chi, wrapped in green lettuce and stuffed meticulously into your mouth in 1 big mouthful? Just awesome!
Pros and Cons of eating at Ssikkek Korean Restaurant
Let’s start of the pros shall we? The taste was great. Fresh ingredients, no holds barred on the generosity and quality of the meats. Our BBQ plate was also great. The technology allowed smoke to be directed away from you while the oil seeps away through the seams of the plate, leaving you with awesome, well-cooked meat!
Well, there are 2 main cons. Kate pointed out that there weren’t small dishes as a Korean restaurant should have. You know the small dishes like that of Big Mama Korean Restaurant? Yup, those…
Secondly, we realised that although the restaurant has the technology of the BBQ plate which absorbs the smoke from the BBQ, it is not used throughout the restaurant. As a result of these few plates without the suction, the entire restaurant has a “smoke-filled” environment!

Whether to eat at Ssikkek Korean Restaurant?
The price of eating at Ssikkek is $24++ every night and only $14++ from Mondays to Fridays for lunch. Sundays and PH costs the same at $24++ throughout the day. Ssikkek opens from 12pm to 2:30pm for lunch and 5:30pm to 10pm for dinner.
We say that given the quality and generous servings of meats at Ssikkek, it was really well-worth it. If you do not mind leaving the restaurant smelling of BBQ, great quality korean BBQ awaits you at the Restaurant Guest – Ssikkek Korean and BBQ Grill!
1-for-1 Happy Hour Sangrias at Fandango Chijmes!
If you’re looking for 1-for-1 Sangrias, then head on down to Fandango at Chijmes! Kate and I wanted to chill at Chijmes and we chanced upon the happy hour promotions at Fandango, so off we went! (Ok lah, let’s face it, Sangria is a chick’s drink, so you all can guess who wanted to go hor… :p)
The happy hour at Fandango Chijmes starts from 3pm to 7pm daily and is available for Sangrias, house pours and beers. For Sangrias, it is only available by the glass, not the jug.
Sangrias range from $15 to $18 per glass while costing $60 to $70 per jug. Since there is 1-for-1 promotion during happy hours, it means each sangria only costs $8 per glass! Therefore to let our readers know which are the best sangrias here (who are we kidding?! It’s happy hour!)…
We’ve tried 6 Sangrias (over a span of 3 hours – please pace yourself and remember IF YOU DRINK, DONT DRIVE!) and here they are…
Sangrias We’ve tried at Fandango Chijmes
1. Classic Red Sangria – Red Wine, Cherry Brandy and Orange Juice ($15)
2. Apple White Sangria – White Wine, Cointreau and Apple Juice ($15)
3. Rose Sangria – Rose Wine, Cointreau, Apple and Cranberry Juice ($15)
4. Oriental Sangria – White Wine, Cointreau, Jasmine green tea and Apple Juice ($16)
5. Lychee Sangria – White Wine, Lychee Liquour and Cranberry Juice ($16)
6. White Beer Sangria – Hoegaarden, Cointreau, Apricot Brandy and Apple Juice ($15)
Actually, we enjoyed ALL the Sangrias! But we feel that ladies will definitely dig the sweet Sangrias – Lychee, White Beer and Rose Sangrias. The cool thing is that they all come with fresh fruit bits for the real Sangria feel!
Since we’re at a Spanish restaurant, we decided to try out their Paella and 1 tapas…
Compared to the Paella we’ve tried at Serenity @ Vivocity, the Paella at Fandango pales in comparison. The main reason is because of the rice not being fragrant and flavourful. It does not taste as though the grains have fully absorbed the flavours of the seafood. Plus the texture was a little wet, further evidence that it should have been cooked a little longer – for the texture to be drier and for the flavours to be absorbed into the grain.
Mussels were also a little dry.
However, the saving grace was the prawns. Huge, succulent and do-ing (or “Q” as the Taiwanese would say). When the ingredients are fresh, it shows. It even shows in the pictures right?
The mixed mushrooms was sauteed in garlic, pepper and truffles. Oh so delicious! Although we had it by itself, we could have imagined a perfect match to a bun or some bread…ooh lala!
How to get to Fandango Tapas & Wine @ Chijmes for Happy Hour Sangrias
Fandango is located at Chijmes, a short walk from Raffles City. If you’re taking the MRT, it is a short walk from the City Hall MRT station. However, do note that Chijmes will be undergoing a $45 million renovation / facelift, expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Best Ramen in Singapore : Keisuke Tonkotsu King!
Keisuke Tonkotsu King is certainly one of the best ramen joints in Singapore! We were introduced to this ramen outlet at the Orchid Hotel by Ninja Girls. Actually, we didnt quite remember the name of the outlet but vividly recall them saying “just look out for the queue!”.
Glad that we heard that last bit because there were several Japanese restaurants at Orchid Hotel BUT only 1 had a queue! What’s more, there was a queue even BEFORE the place opened for dinner at 6pm!
Keisuke Tonkotsu King at Orchid Hotel Singapore
Just before opening hours, we were handed the ordering chit. At this Tonkotsu joint, you can order 3 versions of the ramen – the original , black spicy or red spicy. We ordered the Tonkotsu and Black Spicy Tonkotsu with all the toppings at $14.80++ and $15.80++ respectively. The Keisuke outlet at Orchid Hotel can only take about 24 guests. Hence, when we were sitted, our order chit were quickly taken and our ramen was served in UNDER 5 minutes FLAT!

The interior of the restaurant was decorated much like that of a local ramen joint in Japan. With the chefs shouting out in Japanese, for a moment, it kinda felt like we’re in Japan! Kate also introduced the grinding of sesame seeds to me. It is said that the sesame seeds bring out the taste of the Tonkotsu soup!
While grinding, our Tonkotsu ramen was served…
As one can imagine, the soup was just so rich and flavourful! No wonder they dare to call themselves “Tonkotsu King”! The thick pork broth was simmered till perfection and served with huge pork slices, black fungus, braised egg, a huge piece of seaweed and the irresistable ramen.
Here comes our tip.
You can actually just order the normal versions of the Tonkotsu ramen for only $10.80++ because…
THERE IS FREE FLOW OF EGGS AND SEASONED BEANSPROUTS!!
As kiasu Singaporeans, we couldnt resist the free flow bit and “went in for the kill” devouring half the container of beansprouts and 3 eggs each! That’s 2 normal eggs and 1 braised egg. Yah, a bit too much. My jeans were BURSTING at the seams as we left the place completely satisfied!
The only catch is that you will have to shell your own eggs – which in some instances (Tom’s instance) may be…well…messy. Oh, we were thinking that the other reason for serving the boiled eggs was for you to see the difference between braised and normal boiled eggs. IT WAS A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!
The whites were flavourful but the yolk was still slightly runny. The entire texture was also softer compared to normal boiled eggs. Makes me want to order the braised eggs on my next visit. Owners are smart! :p

So we got right down to business! We started with the appetizers and some sashimi. The appetizers were fresh while the sashimi was quite good as well. However, the baby scallop was not as fresh…
What to eat at Saltwater Cafe Dinner Buffet
We thought the BBQ and roasted meat section could brighten up the session. However, we were again disappointed. The BBQ selection was limited to sotong, dory that was not too fresh, chicken chop as well as lamb. We thought lamb could salvage the situation. It was not to be. The meat was tough and dry. At the BBQ selection, the roasted duck and roasted chicken were acceptable. Char siew on the other hand was found wanting, with the sauce overpowering the taste of the char siew.
Well, all is not lost though. The braised pork was a hit with us. Tender, fatty pork belly with a flavourful but not too sweet/salty sauce. The rendang chicken had an authentic nonya taste to it. You know the kind where you can taste the grinded bits mixed into the rendang sauce? Coupled with tender chicken…Oh so delicious!
Laksa and Lor Mee at Saltwater Cafe Village Hotel Changi
The laksa and lor mee were also stars at this buffet! Their lor mee can give Tiong Bahru hawker centre’s lor mee a run for their money! A variety of ingredients such as pork belly, ngoh hiang and crispy bits added layers of texture to this local delight.
The gravy for laksa is not the thick kind but exudes flavours, making you want to slurp another spoon with each mouthful. Succulent fresh prawns added to the selling points of this dish.

Next, we came to Kate’s favourite section – Desserts!
The dessert section was quite decent. Cakes and dessert shots were quite attractive and delectable. In addition, they also offered durian pengat!

Although the durian pengat at Ellenborough Market Cafe was the best we’ve tried, we were pleasantly surprised to be able to try Saltwater Cafe’s rendition. We do recommend (to Saltwater Cafe) removing the sago and adding the texture of the durian flesh in so that it really makes the pengat as though you’re eating mouths full of durian!

Changi Village Food Centre is one of the most famous food centres for Singapore Hawker food. Other famous ones include ABC Brickworks market , Golden Mile Food Centre and Chomp Chomp Food Centre!
What’s there to eat at Changi Village Food Centre?
Nasi Lemak and Longan Red Tea Pudding at Changi Village Food Centre
There are many Nasi Lemak stalls at the Changi Village Food Centre and we came upon the international muslim food stall’s nasi lemak because of its long queue! Long queues equal good food right? So we joined to find out. The wait was only slightly more than 5 minutes and we ordered the fried chicken set. The price was quite steep at $3.50. In terms of quantity, you get an additional piece of drumlet. The chicken was excellent! Crispy on the outside and tender yet juicy on the inside. Im actually salivating as I write this! The rice and chili was quite common. Hence, overall, we’re not really sure if it’s worth $3.5. If it was $2.5, even with 1 less drumlet, we’d definitely recommend it.
Next, we tried the Longan Red Tea Pudding. Yet another famous dessert you must try at the Changi Village Food Centre. Again for $2 bucks, it was a little expensive. But we do recommend it. The taste of red tea in the form of a pudding/jelly was indeed refreshing. Coupled with the evaporated milk, it presented a different form of milk tea altogether!
Battle of the Chicken Chop Ipoh Hor Fun at Changi Village Hawker Centre

As with the battle of the best chilli ban mian in KL, we decided to settle this dispute of the best Chicken Chop Ipoh Hor Fun in Changi Village Food Centre!
Located right in the middle of the hawker centre, there are 2 stalls that sells the delectable chicken chop Ipoh Hor Fun. If you do not notice carefully, you would think that the 2 stalls are one and the same since the signs on the stalls are very very similar. However, we asked the uncle of stall 1 and he said
“No, we are opposition. It is like Samsung, you have and I have.”
There you have it. Since they are “opposition”, we’ve got to settle this dispute right? For Kate, she thoroughly enjoyed stall 1. Actually, stall 1’s chicken resembled that of the taiwanese fried chicken. However, I tell you (overwriting Kate’s recommendation), Amigo’s Chicken Chop Hor Fun is definitely better. Firstly, you see the amount of chicken, it has almost double the amount for the same price of $3.50. Secondly, the chilli is spicy, sweet and aromatic. Thirdly, the chicken itself was crispy, flavourful, chunky and juicy. Last but not least, there was a queue of young army boys there!
So Amigo’s chicken chop ipoh hor fun comes out top in this battle!

Mutton Murtabak, Egg and Plain Prata at Changi Village
The total price of the mutton murtabak, egg prata, plain prata and iced coffee was only $10. Have you seen the size of this generous mutton murtabak? The prata and murtabak were all CRISPY!!! The curry was rich, bursting with meaty flavours. A little spicy but it perfectly complemented the crispy and fresh pratas. Yummilicious!

The first thing we noticed about the restaurant was its relaxed setting. The restaurant, though on the first level is set against a row of greenery on the outside of the restaurant, making it feel as though you’re enjoying your brunch amidst a lush tropical setting.

Appetizers at Lime Restaurant @ Parkroyal on Pickering
The appetizers at Lime were simple and really whets your appetite for more! The vine tomatoes with crab rillette was an instant hit! The sweet juicy tomatoes accompanied by fresh crab was just a perfect match. Who would have thought of it? Crab and tomatoes…hmm…
The salads were also a great starter. The Thai mango, pomelo and Thai beef salad were fresh and crunchy on every bite. The mildly hot taste also made this starter irresistible – Tom actually slurped up the entire bowl! The homemade salmon and mushroom soup are not to be missed as well!
Without much hesitation, we promptly moved into the stars of this Sunday Brunch Champagne Buffet!
Highlights of the Sunday Brunch at Lime restaurant
Foie gras is usually a prominent feature for Sunday Brunches. But have you seen the foie gras at Lime? IT’s HUGE!! The generous serving allowed us to enjoy chock full of flavours on every bite! Served together with the passion fruit & apple compote, the pan-seared foie gras was just “oh so delicious!”
The mushroom risotto as well as the herb crusted cod didnt disappoint as well. Touted as stars of this buffet, be sure to try them out as you will be enticed by the rich flavours of the risotto as well as the fresh and tender cod! But dont get too carried away as there are still other highlights at this Sunday brunch!
Seafood section – Sashimi, Sushi, Pacific Oysters, Maine Lobsters and more!
Asian picks, salads and 12 different cheeses!
Prawn noodles, Braised lamb shank, fried rice and tiger prawns!
Beware of the prawn noodles…It is spicy! Kate coughed on her first sip of the soup!
Excellent service at Lime Restaurant at Parkroyal on Pickering
Service at Lime was simply impeccable! In the short 3 hours (yes, 3 hours just passes by at Lime’s Sunday Brunch!) we experienced the following…
1. Chairs were pulled as we were about to be seated and we were tucked in nicely at our seats. First time only lah.
2. Napkins were unfolded and placed individually on our laps.
3. Drinks were introduced to us including the type of wines and juices (eventually we still stuck to the champagne…)
4. Champagne was promptly topped up and we were asked politely each time.
5. Likewise with finished dishes. Permission was asked to clear dishes -even with empty plates.
6. Pizza slices and fried rice were served fresh from the kitchen to our tables.
7. Smiles were aplenty throughout our meal and we were served our coffee preferences individually at the end of our meal!
This kind of personalised service reminded us of our fine-dining experiences…
Other highlights at Lime’s Sunday Brunch Buffet
Herb crusted lamb rack and US prime rib
Like most brunches, there’s also a section serving roasted meats. The herb crusted lamb rack and US prime ribs were highlights at this section. Especially the lamb. It may have felt a little gamey at first, but the tenderness and flavourful fatty bits (observe the fatty bits in the photo above!) as well as the herbs soon took over. Yum!
Chef Alex’s specialties
Besides the usual Sunday Brunch fare, Chef Alex had other tricks up his sleeves. He told us that while he was in Dubai, he created the “A” sauce – the “Alex” sauce! This secretly guarded recipe makes the stir fried chicken with curry leaves so so flavourful! The tender chicken bites wrapped in “A” sauce was just irresistible. Other asian delights such as the beef cheek (2 days of preparations!), cereal pork and roasted duck also made this Sunday Brunch unique in its own ways.

How can a Sunday Brunch be complete without the bubbly? Lime’s Sunday Brunch Champagne Buffet offers the perfect match with the Piper Heidsieck. The french produced Piper Heidsieck Champagne is light, crisp and bubbly, making it a perfect companion with the quality food served. A touch of class to the Sunday Brunch 🙂
As we headed for the desserts, we found out that the DESSERTS WERE A WHOLE OTHER BUFFET!
Chocolate Banana Pudding, in-house ice cream/sorbet, in-house sweets (lime marshmallows!)
Macarons, green tea tiramisu and creme brulee
Lime restaurant’s chocolate fondue!
Assortment of cakes including highlights of Key Lime Pie and Opera cake!
We took slightly over an hour to work through the desserts and it was simply worth it! We just have to highlight that you must try the Lime Pie, Lime Marshmallow, Lime sorbet (in fact all things Lime was excellent), Opera Cake, Green Tea Tiramisu, Macarons as well as the ice creams (triple chocolate ice cream!)! (Going trigger crazy with the exclamation marks!)
For us, the desserts were a great highlight. The chocolates from the ice cream and Opera Cake was so sinfully rich! Lime items had a refreshing taste to it while the green tea tiramisu offered matcha tastes in layered textures!
To end off the meal, we had the cappuccino and latte (inclusive in the buffet). And yes, they were gourmet coffees…Ah…

Sunday Brunch starts from 12pm to 3pm on Sundays. The prices are actually very competitive because if you take a look at the ala carte menu, the herb crusted cod fillet costs $38++ and mushroom risotto costs $24++ while the cakes go for $12++ per piece. If you take into consideration the variety of food that you’ll be having (including the foie gras, lamb and US prime rib), the price is a steal for quality food! Oh, don’t forget the bubbly! The Piper Heidsieck Champagne is one of the main ingredients for this Sunday Brunch!

Sumptuous Japanese Buffet in Amsterdam! | Things to do in Amsterdam
Japanese Buffet in Amsterdam ?! You must be kidding me! Why did we come all the way from Asia to Europe just to try an Asian buffet? Well, since the price was ok (about 22.50 euros per person) plus the fact that it said “Japanese Buffet” outside the restaurant, we thought that we should “splurge” a little on the special occasion of Chinese New Year – CNY!
Turns out that our idea of All You Can Eat Buffet is different from that of the Japanese Buffet Restaurants in Amsterdam!
Rules of Japanese Buffet in Amsterdam
We’re not entirely sure if this set of rules apply for all Japanese buffet restaurants in the Netherlands but they are not “free flow” as we know it in Asia! The rules are
Rule Number 1 : You can only order 5 rounds of food
(Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?! You call this a buffet?)
Rule Number 2 : You can only order 5 items per round
(Whaaaaaaaaaaat?! Have we been cheated? Is this really a buffet?!)
Rule Number 3 : You can only order the next round if you have finished the previous round.
(Whaaaaaaaaaaat?! So calculative?!)
Well, on the flip side, since Kate and I are dining together, we get to choose 50 items altogether. That’s not too bad, so we decided to go ahead after reading the rules. We soon realise that this “buffet” can be really full as well…take a look at what we had…
Round 1
To capitalise on the number of rounds we have, we ordered the maximum number of dish in round 1 (good strategy right?) The sushi turned out to be one of the best sushi we’ve tasted in Europe (of course the best we’ve tasted was in Japan)! The fish was fresh and the rice was fragrant. The Udon(s) was nothing to shout about but the teriyaki beef was “WOW!” – tender, savoury and cannotstopeatingable! Definitely one of the best teriyaki beef we’ve tasted. The tempura was also good. After the first round, we really wonder why the continent of Europe, eons away from Asia can have such excellent Japanese chefs…(have you also noticed the traditional japanese plates used in this restaurant?)
Round 2
The highlight of round 2 was definitely the succulent prawns. Huge ones at that. Subsequently, we realised that the portion was quite huge because it was brought to us by mistake! Ours should have been a 2 person portion not a 4 person. But still, we heartily devoured them. Teriyaki chicken and fish was good and surprisingly, the macha green tea ice cream was excellent as well (since drinks were not included, we ordered some ice cream to “clear our palettes” a little)
Round 3
The highlight of round 3 was the much anticipated pork tenderloin! It didnt disappoint! It was lightly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside! Could imagine that the meat was tenderised before coating and frying. Excellent! The octopus was also quite fresh. Sushi were just as good as in the first round. By now, we were VERY FULL! Hence, we decided to make round 4 our last round. This idea of buffet really works! We couldnt even make it to round 5!
Round 4
The 4th round was Tom’s downfall. He ordered the fried oyster which was not fresh. Although he knew that it was not fresh (texture was quite hard while chewing), he finished all of it so that he could order something in round 5. This was a bad move. Tom had the runs throughout the night that evening! Hahaha! Beef curry and beef pepper steak was great. Turns out that anything with beef at this restaurant was excellent!
Round 5
After all that (can you believe the 2 of us finished all that above?!) we decided to end our round 5 with something “healthy”…a platter of fruits! Yup, to quench the thirst as well. 🙂

Tiffin Room @ Raffles Hotel : The Oldest Restaurant in Singapore!
Nope, we also did not know that Tiffin Room is the oldest restaurant in Singapore.
“Tiffin” actually refers to a light mid-day meal and the restaurant was only named “Tiffin Room” since 1976. However, the restaurant has its roots traced back to 1890s when the founders of Raffles Hotel (the Sarkies Brothers) opened a restaurant at Raffles Place then known as the Raffles Tiffin Rooms.
Today, Tiffin Room is a classy, colonial-styled restaurant that serves daily breakfast as well as its famed curry buffet.
Breakfast at the Tiffin Room Raffles Hotel
As with all buffet meals at the Raffles Hotel Singapore, choices are fairly extensive. For breakfast, there’s a semi-buffet menu where you’ll get to choose from breakfast fares ranging from egg benedict to belgian waffles…
The menu offers quite a number of selection and you can actually try all the dishes in the menu as well. So we went classic and started with the Egg Benedict as well as the Raffles Omelette. The omelette was quite normal with a spicy tang from the chopped chili. However, the highlight has got to be the Egg Benedict.
We often wonder how the chefs can get this cooking temperature just perfect. Slightly firm on the outside, maintaining the shape of a poached egg. On the inside, runny yolk that flows seemingly non-stop because of the size of the egg. Speaking of the egg, it tasted au naturale, unlike the eggs we normally eat…
The Belgian Waffles was great as well. Slight crisp on the outside while still light and fluffy upon that first bite. The rest of the buffet included
One of our favourite pastries was the almond croissant. The chocolate croissant was fantastic as well. The almonds complemented the fluffy textures of the croissant while the chocolate was so rich on the inside!
The magical experience for us at the Tiffin Room was this. As we were invited by Raffles Hotel to have a 2 nights staycation, we had 2 breakfasts at the Tiffin Room. On our second morning, Sivam, our waiter came up to us and have us seated (as with all classy restaurants, he pulled our chairs and tucked us in) and guess what he said…
“Good morning Sir, 2 orange and 2 coffee for you Sir?”
WOW! HE ACTUALLY REMEMBERED WHAT WE ORDERED THE PREVIOUS MORNING!! We have experienced great service before but that was personalised service right there! During the course of the breakfast, we would be asked if we’re enjoying our breakfast and given regular top up of our orange juice (speaking of the orange juice, it was fresh!). Our plates were also cleared promptly so that we could have space for more! 🙂
Northern Indian Lunch Buffet at Tiffin Room Raffles Hotel
The other highlight of Tiffin Room is the curry lunch buffet.
As with buffets at the Raffles Hotel, the spread was again very generous…
The curries that stood out for us was the chicken and the beef. The beef was SO TENDER! Went really well with the naan that was served separately. The chicken on the other hand soaked in the curry and was bursting with flavour with each bite!
But the little known highlight about this buffet is the DESSERTS!!
There are hot desserts such as the fried milk dumpling and Indian vermicelli cooked with milk. Dry desserts such as the cashew nut and milk candies and of course the cold desserts such as the bread pudding and the famous raisin ice cream (also known as raisin kulfi). The ice cream was filled with raisins with every bite and had with a rich velvety taste that was hard to resist!
We rounded up our meal with a cup of tea and it was served in this colonial era teapot…
For its impeccable service and good quality food. We give the Tiffin Room the thumbs up and kudos to the team of chefs and waiters for delivering such good food and excellent service!

At the entrance, there was a spread of appetizers that included peppered tenderloin carpaccio, poached egg with smoked salmon with mini ratatouille (yes ratatouille! remember the movie?) and smoked eggplant caviar. Imagine the size of a billiard table. Now imagine that table full of appetizers. Yup.
Some call the Sunday Brunch at the Bar and Billiard Room a carnivore’s experience and they’re really not far off. With choices such as US beef tenderloin, roasted Welsh lamb and the BBQ Iberico pork ribs, even herbivores get tempted. The highlight for us was the lamb and the pork ribs. The pork ribs were tender (meat falls off its ribs) and the BBQ flavour was just amazing. The lamb on the other hand had a great mix of fatty bits that made it oh so irresistible!
If you’re a fan of live shucked oysters, you’re in for a treat! The choice of oysters include the Irish, Canadian, Fine de Claire and Belon. The Belon is apparently the most expensive of the 4. But we really enjoyed the Canadian the most. It really really tasted like milk from the ocean! Huge oyster with a tinge of the freshness of the sea. The maine lobster was fresh and succulent. No wonder there’s a queue…
But what is a Sunday Brunch like with Foie Gras and Champagne?
According to our waiter Dhiraj (thanks for the excellent and personalised service Dhiraj!), Raffles Hotel is the only place in Singapore to serve the Billecart-Salmon Champagne. Steeped in tradition, the brand has been around for over 200 years (WOW!) and is chosen by the sommelier as a great compliment not only in taste but also in class to the food at the B&B Room Sunday Brunch.

As always, the lightly seared foie gras gives off the smoky taste and simply melts in your mouth. No we’re not exaggerating. It literally melts releasing the full flavoured aroma with every swirl of your palate. Ok, now we’re exaggerating.
Having reviewed the new Italian menu at the Raffles Courtyard, we knew the high standards to expect from the pastas of Chef Nicola. He’s really a genius with Italian food. This ravioli combines simple tastes such as the humble cherry tomato, giving it a quick saute and transforming it into a home-styled, home-flavoured comfort. You really cant stop at 2. Tom had 5.
Along the way, we were advised by fellow bloggers to reserve our stomach. This is because the dessert is A WHOLE BUFFET BY ITSELF!!
Tom is normally not a dessert person and he would usually skip this phase altogether. But the fact that he ate 8 different types of desserts just speaks volume of the quality of the dessert spread at the Raffles Hotel Sunday Brunch. Besides the high quality ice creams (try the vanilla, you may stop eating other vanilla ice creams thereafter), the passion fruit combinations as well as the rich chocolate mousse was simply a pleasure. The cream brulee was not too sweet. Light and inviting. Yum!
All in all, the experience, service, class and taste at the Sunday Brunch of the Bar and Billiard Room Raffles Hotel is simply unparalleled.

The Original Singapore Sling from Long Bar Raffles Hotel!
A Staycation at Raffles Hotel Singapore would definitely not be complete without a taste of the original Singapore Sling from Long Bar Raffles Hotel!
The original Singapore Sling was created by Mr Ngiam Tong Boon, a bartender at Raffles Hotel around 1915.
Legend has it that the Singapore Sling was created because ladies of the time were not supposed to consume alcohols in public. So the Singapore Sling was concocted to conceal the light alcohol in a bright fancy colour. The ladies were then happy that there was a drink available to them and the men were happy that they could buy drinks for their ladies! Win-win!
We were invited to a staycation at the Raffles Hotel Singapore and this little story was shared to us by the Resident Historian – Mr Leslie Danker. Cool huh? Let’s now find out what’s in this national drink of Singapore…
Ingredients of the Original Singapore Sling
The ingredients of the Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel are
30ml Gin
15ml Cherry Heering
7.5ml Dom Benedictine
7.5ml Cointreau
120ml Sarawak Pineapple Juice
15ml Lime Juice
10ml Grenadine
A dash of Angostura Bitters
Garnish with a slice of Pineapple and Cherry
How to make the Original Singapore Sling
If you’re interested to find out how to make the original Singapore Sling, here’s a demonstration done by a bartender at Long Bar Raffles Hotel during our staycation there.
As part of the demonstration to us, we were also shown how the slings of Cambodia, France, Indonesia, Philippines and Seychelles were made. Each of them are named after a Raffles Hotel in each of these countries.
If you have not tried the original Singapore Sling before, you have got to try it because it most definitely does not resemble ANY KIND of Singapore Sling we have tried before, ANYWHERE! Nope it does not resemble the ones at Clarke Quay or onboard SQ flights…

Toby’s the Dessert Asylum Parkway Parade- What’s good?
Nestled at the corner of level 2 at Parkway Parade is Toby’s the Dessert Asylum. Kate and I saw the unpretentious ambience of the place and decided to give it a try.

The first thing we noticed was that the crew did not have any uniform or same-coloured polo-T. Everyone wore their own shirts to work. Everyone was able to be cashier, serve the food and clear the tables. Talk about empowering! Perhaps it’s a family owned business? Anyone care to comment?
We took some time to scan through the menu as there were simply too many items to choose from!
Mains Menu @ Toby’s the Dessert Asylum
The blue lightning beside some of the dish represents “Chef’s recommendation” or something along those lines. This day, we decided to have one mains and one dessert to share, so we went with the pork stew baked rice.
Pork Stew Baked Rice with Chardonnay @ Toby’s the Dessert Asylum – $12.95
The pork stew somewhat resembled the chinese mei cai kou rou. Surprisingly, this east (pork stew) meets west (baked rice with cheese) combination, worked really well and we tucked into it readily!
Next we had our dessert.

We scanned through the menu and decided to go for another chef’s recommendation that needed 15 minutes of waiting time – The Leaning Tower of Toby.

The tower was made up of 2 squarish pastries, sandwiched between a strawberry / whipped cream layer as well as a scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with another roll-like pastry.
The highlight of this dessert would be the fresh cream that went really well with the pastry and berries (there were blue berries as well). We think that the taste and presentation was good. But the price was a little steep.
We also ordered a bottle of Chardonnay ($28.95) to accompany our meal and dessert.
All in all, Toby’s the Dessert Asylum offers good service (friendly staff), warm and welcoming ambience. Standard of food is somewhat comparable to most western joints. Good place to hang out with friends!

Chihuly Lounge @ Ritz Carlton Singapore : A Classy Weekend Afternoon Tea!
After our amazing staycation at the Ritz Carlton Singapore, we were invited to Chihuly Lounge for the media’s preview of the Spring Weekend Afternoon Tea!
And boy did we have a classy afternoon!

The Spring Weekend Afternoon Tea at Chihuly , Ritz Carlton has an emphasis on CHEESES this time round! Sure there are savoury dishes and all. BUT for desserts, cheeses range from ricotta to parmesan to mozzarella to feta and even goat cheese! Cheeses take centre stage!

There’s a great selection of sandwiches (including beef pastrami, smoked chicken and smoked salmon), canapes (smoked duck, scallops, salmon and eringi mushroom) and savoury dishes such as the steamed scallop siew mai, glazed wagyu beef ball with smoked garlic as well as the panko prawn with wasabi mayonnaise!
Our favourite from this selection has got to be the scallop and salmon! Both the salmon and scallop were VERY FRESH and the taste was very refreshing as well! The salmon roe really brought out the sweetness of salmon!
The wagyu beef ball and scallop siew mai should not be missed! Full flavoured beef infused with the smoky garlic makes this a must-try! The “white upon white” (scallop and white meat) steamed combination, also made this dish a favourite.

Sounds yummy doesnt it? But you wouldnt have guessed that the hot seller is this…
Yes, the mouse is the hot seller! And it’s used as a decoration with all other desserts as well! Each time they appear on the trays, they’d be gone almost instantly!
Ma look! They’re here as well!
The mouse is actually the Parmesan Macaroon! The ingenious combination made this dish delectable, refreshing and highly sought after!
It’s small little things like this that makes the afternoon tea an enjoyable one. Even if the ice melts, the taste does not get diluted because the ice is made of the same tea! 😮
How much is the Weekend Afternoon Tea at Chihuly Lounge , Ritz Carlton Singapore?
The price is for the afternoon tea is $52++. A little bit on the high side. However, the quality of the food that you’d be enjoying, more than made up for the price. Not to mention, the exquisite presentation of the desserts!
