Malaysian Food Street @ Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) : Is The Food Really Good?

Malaysian Food Street Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)

Many of our readers should know by now that there are so many things to do in Sentosa! Today, we’re going to talk about the latest offering at Resorts World Sentosa and that is the Malaysian Food Street.

Malaysian Food Street Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)
Malaysian Food Street Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)

The Malaysian Food Street boasts of authentic malaysian hawker fare from all over Malaysia. These include Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice from Kuala Lumpur (walked past the store and really smelled great), Malacca Chicken Rice Ball (we’ve tried the actual ones from Melaka),Klang Bak Kut Teh (a kind of pork ribs soup) as well as the Penang Lim Brother’s Char Koay Teow (for our oversea readers click here to have an idea of what char kway teow is) – just to name a few. The greatest part is that you dont have to travel to all these places. Just get to Sentosa and tada, all the best foods of Malaysia are waiting for you there!

However, the real question now is…Is the food at the Malaysian Food Street really good?

2bearbear.com hopes to give you an idea through some of the foods that we tried…

Kuala Lumpur KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee – $6 a plate

KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee @ Malaysian Food Street RWS
KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee @ Malaysian Food Street RWS

First of all, the queue was REALLY REALLY REALLY LONG!!! So you think that you have queued for the last 20 minutes and finally reached the cashier where you can pay and take your hokkien mee? NO!!!! You reached the cashier just to pay and get your queue number!!

Pay and get a queue number for your hokkien mee

So when you finally get your queue number, you have the right to leave the queue and come back to collect when your number is flashed on an electronic display. This would take another 10 minutes. So…the average waiting time (and it was 8pm, not the peak of the peak hour) was 30-40 minutes!

During the 10 minutes, we were able to get hold of the Penang Ah Long Lor Bak aka Ngor Hiang (aka yummy fried stuff for our oversea readers) in local terms. And I digress.

Back to the Hokkien Mee. This version of hokkien mee is fried in fragrant black soy sauce and oil. Yes. Oil. Sometimes pork lard. But yes oil. (Learn more about the other type of hokkien mee aka fried prawn noodles). The raw ingredients include pork, slices of cabbage, 3 prawns and the thick noodles…

Ingredients of the KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee
Ingredients of the KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee

The thick yellow noodles is different from the usual flat yellow type served commonly in Singapore. Now, a little bit about the frying process…

Frying the KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee
Frying the KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee

Yes. We were so bored that we observed every single action of the chefs. Repeatedly (more than 10 times before it was our turn). First, the garlic was added to be fried with oil. Once the fragrance exuberates, the rest of the ingredients are added together with the stock. The secret dark soya sauce and more oil is added till the dry texture is achieved. The thing about frying this version of the hokkien mee is that you have to be patient to allow the noodles to be infused with the taste and the whole wok (frying pan) will be stained. Hence, after each round (frying of 2 plates), the wok will be washed. Very professional I must say.

The end result…

Freshly fried KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee - $6 a plate
Freshly fried KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee – $6 a plate

Taste Test

So is the KL Jalan Alor Hokkien Mee really that good? Was it worth the wait for 30 minutes? Sad to say, as we’ve always been honest with our readers, we’ve got to say no.

Why? First of all, we have to qualify that the black soy sauce tasted really good BUT it wasnt really infused into the noodles. The udon looking noodles also looked great BUT didnt quite deliver on the Q (bouncy chewy) factor. The saving grace of the dish was that the chilli was quite unique (we’re guessing ikan bilis/prawn paste?) and that the prawns were really fresh.

Has any of our readers eaten the actual hokkien mee from KL and compared with this version? Is it really the same authentic version?

Penang Ah Long Lor Bak – $8 for a plate of mixed platter

As mentioned above, during the 10 minutes when we paid and got our queue number for the hokkien mee, we managed to squeeze in time for the Penang Ah Long Lor Bak aka fried yummy stuff.

Penang Ah Long Lor Bak @ Malaysian Food Street RWS

(Store was closed at 9pm when we returned to take a picture)

The queue was really short and we got our stuff within like 5 minutes. The platter included Ngor Hiang (you wont want to know whats inside), prawn crisps, fried toufu (beancurd), fish balls, fried taro (yam) and century eggs (preserved eggs).

Penang Ah Long Lor Bak - $8 for a mixed platter

Taste Test

Well, what can go wrong with fried stuff right? Our favourite was the Ngor Hiang (which you really dont want to know whats inside) and pretty much everything else. Next, desserts!

Chendol and Ice Kachang

Ice Kachang @ Malaysian Food Street RWS – $2.50 a bowl
Chendol @ Malaysian Food Street RWS - $2.50 a bowl
Chendol @ Malaysian Food Street RWS – $2.50 a bowl

These are local desserts that are commonly found in Singapore and Malaysia. The ice kachang (mixed ice) is a dessert that fills a bowl with shaved ice. At the bottom of the bowl, you’ll find “goodies” such as red bean, corn, jelly and attap chee. The ice kachang here at the Malaysian Food Street is unique in that one of the brown syrup is not the common sweet syrup that we know but is actually a variant of SARSI! Quite ingenious we must say. Of course, we searched and found 3 large attap chee seeds! (sweet, translucent seedlings of the nipa palm).

The chendol is another shaved ice dessert mixed with red bean, gula melaka and coconut milk. Fatty but adoringly delicious. This version kept the both of us fighting till the last scoop.

Final Verdict

Replica of the food streets of Malaysia

Well, sadly for us, the hokkien mee was not as fantastic as we thought. However, the Lor Bak and desserts turned out to be quite decent.

All in all, we would definitely be back again, simply because it is a amalgamation of all the best stalls in Malaysia. One stop for us and many choices to choose from. We will very likely be back for the char koay teow and the claypot rice. Cant wait for our next visit!

Do share with us if you have tried the other dishes, let us know what are the great eats at the Malaysian Food Street!

For your convenience, we have arranged for the best hotel deals in and around Sentosa right here!

P.S. Do take note that different stalls rest on different days. This means that you might not be able to taste all your favourite foods at 1 go.

The palace was initial built as the Stadhuis or Town Hall in 1655. In 1806, after the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis Napoleon came to power, the Town Hall was converted into the palace for his own use.

Today, Queen Beatrix uses the palace for official functions and state visits. We remember that when we were there some years ago, it was still under construction (2005-2009). Today, the palace is once again ready for visits.

Amsterdam Shopping Streets

The thing we love about shopping in the Netherlands is that the shopping streets never seem to end!

Case in point is the shopping stretch from Nieuwendijk all the way to Kalverstraat. Stretching a distance of 1.5km, shoppers are greeted with shops of all kinds ranging from shoes to clothing to apparels, from international brands to local brands. Simply, you’ll be spoilt for choice when you shop along this stretch.

Besides the wide range of choices available to the shoppers, the thing we love most about the shopping stretch here in Amsterdam is that

1. Shops are lined one after another and opposite each other. For instance, after shopping at H&M, you might be greeted with Bershka just opposite and when you leave Bershka, Zara could be just opposite again! The result – you could be shopping in a zig-zag pattern before you even realise it!

Amsterdam Shopping Streets

2. Typical Dutch construction.. You might not notice it initially, but soon you’ll realise that you’re actually shopping along a street full of Dutch influence. The buildings are lined one after another; some thin while others thinner, using typical dutch construction bricks that are thinner than the standard size bricks you see today. This means that while shopping, you’re actually reveling in history as well!

Typical Dutch Construction - Shopping Streets Amsterdam
Typical Dutch Construction – Shopping Streets Amsterdam

The other thing we wanted to bring across to our Singapore readers is that. H&M IS VERY COMMON IN EUROPE!! All the hype started when H&M opened its flagship store in the heart of the Orchard Shopping belt and queues stretched for kilometres long (we’re exaggerating, but you get the idea). However, as you can see in the following video, there are actually 3 H&Ms along the same street, all within visual range!

3 H&Ms along 1 street in Amsterdam!

So we hope you’ll enjoy your next shopping experience in Amsterdam. We all know Kate did!

After a long walk from the Euromast to the Erasmus Bridge, we finally arrived at De Kuip (aka Feyenoord Stadion) some 2 hours later!

Given the distance, we wouldnt recommend taking this route. Perhaps a walk from the Euromast to the Erasmusbrug. But a walk from Euromast to De Kuip is not really recommended. You could if you want to. Looking back, we’d have preferred the trams.

We did catch great views along the way…

The Feyenoord Stadion is home to a very rich history of Dutch football. The most memorable match is recent times has got to be the 2002 UEFA Cup victory over Borussia Dortmund with a score of 3-2.

Legends such as Coenraadt “Coen” Moulijn, a nation revered winger, also plyed his trade with Feyenoord. His statue is even enshrined at the entrance of the stadium…

Euromast Rotterdam

One of most famous attractions in Rotterdam (in addition to Kubus, Willemsbrug, Erasmus Bridge) is of course the Euromast!

Towering 185 metres over the city of Rotterdam, Euromast is the tallest building in Rotterdam. It was constructed towards the end of the 1950s and was the idea of Hugh Maaskant, a Dutch architect.

Euromast Rotterdam

The entrance fees to this observatory tower costs 9.25 euro for adults and 5.90 euro for children aged 4-11. At the first floor of the Euromast, there is a Deli (cafe with free wifi) and a small souvenir shop.

On this day, we took the entrance fee with the walking commentary (costs a little bit more but well worth it). With the commentary, you can skip to whichever location you are looking at and hear some interesting snippets of information.

This post will strive to give you the COMPLETE TOUR of EUROMAST with a series of videos. Although some (if not most of it) turned out to be “Blair Witch Projecty”, we hope that our efforts will still give you a good idea of how Euromast is like.

If you enjoyed what you see, then you can make a trip there. If not, the Euroscoop video should give you an excellent view of the city.

First, we entered the lift that brings you right to the height of 96 metres where you will see the Brasserie (Restaurant) on the right and the stairs up to the observation platform, on the left.

Taking the lift up to the height of 96 metres at Euromast

Euromast Brasserie

This is how the Euromast Brasserie looks like…

The food is reasonably priced for a restaurant up in the sky. We had the club sandwich that came with chips and salad.

The club sandwich is reasonably priced at 10.50 euro (well, it is afterall “sky sandwich”). The cheese was oozing with flavour (dutch cheese are still the best) and each bite was simply delectable. A matching local pint of Heineken rounds up the light but flavourful lunch.

The great thing is that while you’re having your meal, you can also enjoy great views of Rotterdam…

Wine and dine with breath taking views of Rotterdam from Euromast

OR you can hop out for a while and enjoy a ride up on the Euroscoop, an extension of the observation tower. This we will touch on in a short while.

Continuing with the video tour, the flight up the stairs on the left brings you to the first observation deck

Here, you can marvel at the breath taking views of Rotterdam…

The other thing you can do on this deck is some EXTREME SPORTS! To get your adrenaline pumped up, the Euromast also offer enthusiasts the option of abseiling or rope slide which is a version of the “Flying Fox”.

This video shows some participants abseiling…

Abseiling at the Euromast

Moving further up, one has to navigate several flights of stairs to the deck of the Euroscoop. There is also something like a cargo lift that you can take. 2bearbear.com has braved the cold winds (and frozen fingers) to take these videos for you to enjoy in the comfort of your home…

Around the observation deck at Euromast

As you can hear, the winds were really strong and temperatures were at about 5 degrees Celsius. Hence, the cold hands and therefore the shaky video.

Again, we apologise for the “Blair Witch” video, but we make it up to you with this one.

Euroscoop

Stunning views of Rotterdam from the Euroscoop

Along the black walls, there is an entrance into the Euroscoop. The Euroscoop is a revolving observation platform that brings you to the height of 185 metres. From here, you can have unobstructed views of the entire Rotterdam. The best thing is that you can take the ride as many times as you want as it’s already included in the entrance fees!

So why do we say that the

Euromast is how an observation tower ought to be?

1. Unobstructed Views of Rotterdam

As you can see from the videos, Euromast offers unobstructed views of the entire Rotterdam. The best place to catch a bird’s eye view of the city has got to be here.

2. Unlimited rides on the Euroscoop

Unlike some observation towers, the rides on the revolving Euroscoop is included in the entrance fees! This means unlimited rides for the kids!

3. There’s something for everyone!

If you’re a tourist, you’ll enjoy the views of the city.
If you’re an enthusiast, the extreme sports wont disappoint.
If you’re a connoisseur, you’ll enjoy the menu of the Brasserie matched with unparalleled views of the city.

If you’re not into any of the above, you can still chill with your friends at the Deli on the ground floor.

Hence, we would rate the Euromast as one of the best observation towers around. If you have the opportunity, take a trip to the Euromast, you’ll definitely enjoy one of these unique experiences!

The Erasmus Bridge (aka Erasmusbrug) is the most iconic bridge in Rotterdam. In fact, we think that many bridges have been modelled after it. For Singaporeans, you may notice that the Keppel Bay Bridge is somewhat similar as well. So this day, after visiting the world famous Euromast (we shall talk about it in our subsequent posts), we took a walk from the Euromast to the Erasmus Bridge. It took us approximately half hour to reach there. If you take the scenic route along the River Maas, the walk was pretty much enjoyable. En route, we saw the Rotterdam…

The Rotterdam was a cruise ship in yester-years and today, she is permanently moored at this location as a hotel as well as a museum. Hotel New York (vintage building with the red flag) was a place steep in the history of Rotterdam while the Montevideo Residence (the one with the big “M” on it) towers beside it.

Along the way, we passed by this place (called Veerhaven Rotterdam according to Google Map) where ships (that looked like vintage ones from the olden days) were docked. At this location, there was a nice board walk and from there we could have a good view of the Erasmus Bridge as well as structures and ships along the River Maas.

Finally, after “trekking” for more than half an hour, we arrived at the Erasmus Bridge. We passed through it en route to De Kuip aka Stadion Feyenoord. Here’s a view of the bridge while pass through…

Remember that a few posts ago, we touched on the Willemsbrug? We managed to catch an excellent shot of the Erasmus Bridge with the sunset as well!

The Euromast gave us an excellent shot of the Erasmus Bridge too!

Like the Willemsbrug, Erasmus Bridge serves to connect the northern and southern parts of Rotterdam. It was actually designed by Ben van Berkel and was completed in 1996. Looking at its design, it is no wonder that the bridge also earned a nickname – The Swan.

So don’t forget to check out this iconic bridge on your next visit to Rotterdam. You’ll never know when you might see a familiar bridge fashioned after it when you go back to your home country!

It seems that a platform is laid across so it is no different than a normal room internally except that the walls are slanted.

A quick search tells us that kubuswoning was actually an idea of the architect Piet Blom. He wanted to create a cluster somewhat like a small village with resemblance to trees and forests. So if you look closely at each cube house, there is actually a supporting beam that is representative to the trunk of a tree. The cube house itself is of course the top of the tree…

The Cube Houses from a distance | Rotterdam Attractions
The Cube Houses from a distance | Rotterdam Attractions

The predecessor of the cube houses was actually first built in Helmond in 1974. The one we’re seeing now was completed in 1984.

The other interesting thing about the cube houses is that Jackie Chan shot a fighting scene here in the movie “Who Am I”. If you are also a fan, you would have remember him sliding down the Willemswerf building. This scene must have been one of his most iconic action moves in his acting career!

How to get to Kubuswoning / Cube Houses

It is actually quite easy to get to the cube houses. At the end of Hoogstraat, you will notice the Laurenskerk on your left, DONT head there, turn right instead towards the Bibliotheek (the library). Not long after, you should see this building

As this building is shaped like that of the pencil, it is nicked “Het Potlood” by the locals. Once you see it, the cube houses would be just there in view.

To give our readers a feel of the cube houses, enjoy this video clip!

Laurenskerk is an old church situated in the heart of Rotterdam central.

According to records, the Laurenskerk is the only remaining structure of medieval Rotterdam. Work commenced on the construction of Laurenskerk in the 15th century.

Today, in addition to the church services on Sunday, the Laurenskerk is also a venue for concerts and the arts.

Heading towards the River Maas from Hoogstraat, you would not miss this beautiful church…

The Willemswerf Building is exceptionally famous in the Chinese world because of the movie “Who Am I”. In it, Jackie Chan slides down the side of the Willemswerf Building (then owned by Nedlloyd but now acquired by Maersk; sigh…the rise and fall of empires…)

The scene was dramatic as Jackie Chan almost fell down the edge of the slant of the building!

As you walk along the river, you simply cant help but notice a bridge that is bright red in colour and resembles the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This bridge is the Willemsbrug aka Willems Bridge.

The bridge was completed in 1981 and was named after King Willem III of the Netherlands. Why? We do not know…

But what we do know is that it not only provides connectivity for the residents in Rotterdam (from the northern part of the city to the Feijenoord district) but also gives tourists (like us!) an excellent photography moment!

A Leisure Stroll along the Melaka River

Graffiti art on houses along Melaka River

The cost of a river cruise along the Melaka River actually costs only 10RM!

However, on this day, Kate and I decided that “Hey, it’s a bright and sunny day, why not just take a leisurely stroll down the Melaka river?”

And that’s what we did…

We started our leisurely stroll along the Melaka River and we stumbled upon this sign…

Dutch bricks in Melaka
Dutch bricks in Melaka

Turns out that these thin bricks were from the dutch colonial times. These bricks have a stark contrast to the fatter and broader bricks that we see today.

Further down, we came across the Church of St. Francis Xavier that was built in 1849…

as well as the huge sign that states Melaka as a World Heritage City…

Melaka - World Heritage City
Melaka – World Heritage City

Along the river, you can also see the Melaka trees…

Legend has it that the exiled Prince Parameswara was standing under the Melaka Tree when he observed a mouse deer attacking his hunting dogs. Inspired by the fighting spirit of the mouse deer, he asked for the name of the tree of which he was standing under. And the name of Melaka was born…

Moving on, we noticed that there are nicely drawn graffiti art on the houses along the river…

We were pleasantly surprised by the extent of the art and these areas present picturesque spots for tourists along the river.

After (more than) a while, we decided to head inwards towards to city to find a place to rest our feet. We came across the Baker’s Oven and Cafe…

This quaint little cafe is operated by a lovely couple. The wife who is a British does some mean baking and we decided to give the scones a try…

The scone had a crumbly (not too sweet) texture to it and the flavour was brought up and complemented with the jam and cream. The cream was freshly whipped on the spot so there was no hint of extra fatty taste or sweetness to it. Excellent pairing.

We rounded the “meal” with a couple of juices to cool ourselves down on this bright and sunny day…

The leisurely stroll along the Melaka river was indeed rewarding and enjoyable. Take time to take in the sights and even allow yourself to wander through the alleys. You may stumble into hidden “gems” and neighbourhoods that are well worth a visit!

Trishaw Rides in Melaka : A Must-Do Activity!

Trishaw Rides at Stadhuys / Christ Church Melaka

To get a fix of trishaw rides in Melaka, look no further than Stadhuys, otherwise known as the red square in Melaka.

Trishaw Rides at Stadhuys

The Stadhuys is the homeground of the Trishaw riders in Melaka. Here, you can find signs that depict the price of the trishaw rides – typically charged 40RM per hour. The rates of the trishaw rides do differ during the holiday season…

Kate and I were there during the holiday season (new year’s eve) and thought that the prices of trishaw rides as depicted on the signs still held true. However, upon querying, the rates were somewhat cheaper (at 30RM) but the rides were much shorter (at 20 minutes).

Still, one of the must-do activity here in Melaka has got to be this traditional ride on the trishaw. It allows you to get around to all the attractions in Melaka such as the A Famosa aka Porta de Santiago, Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum, Melaka Maritime Museum, St. Paul’s Church and even Jonker Street!

Not only that, if you are lucky, the trishaw rider can give you simple explanations about these attractions. Even if they do not, you still get to enjoy a leisurely ride across town…

Trishaw Ride Melaka

The other main attraction about the trishaws in Melaka is that the trishaw riders take pride in their rides so much so that they put in extra effort to decorate them. Looking at the different brightly coloured decorations of the trishaws is a joy in itself! Not only that, some rides come with the latest sound systems, sub-woofer and all to entertain tourists and onlookers!

Therefore, if you have travelled especially to Melaka, take a ride on the traditional trishaw and enjoy the sights and sounds that this simple mode of transport can bring.

Traffic Jams in Melaka : How bad is it really?

Bad Traffic Jams in Melaka

Many people have talked to us about how bad traffic jams in Melaka can really be. Usually, the single road traffic as well as the peak hours/weekends are mentioned in the same breath.

But how bad is the traffic jam in Melaka really?

This video, taken from our room @ Hotel Equatorial Melaka can testify to the ridiculous traffic in Melaka…

Traffic Jam in Melaka

It is not a myth! Horrendous traffic jams in Melaka is true!!

The road leading from left to right is actually going into a carpark beside the Dataran Pahlawan shopping mall. However, from the crawling speeds of the cars, you can even feel the frustrations of those drivers.

Well, it’s hard to blame tourists and foodies alike for visiting Melaka. There are so many attractions here in Melaka and the local food is yummylicious.

So when you are visiting Malacca the next time round, remember to factor in the bad traffic jams!

If you are looking for authentic Peranakan restaurant in Malacca, look no further than Restoran Ole Sayang.

According to locals (2 ladies that sat opposite us), Restoran Ole Sayang is one of the most reputable Peranakan restaurant in Malacca and many locals will point you to this restaurant at the mention of Peranakan food…

We were quickly shown to our seats at a big round table and shared the table with 2 other ladies.

Chap Chye – A must try Peranakan dish (9.80RM) at Restoran Ole Sayang Melaka

Chap Chye as the name suggests is a “mixed vegetable” dish. Usually the dish comes flavoured by cabbages, black fungus and vermicelli as the main stay. The chap chye at Ole Sayang was quite unique in that it does not resemble the usual peranakan chap chye and has an acquired taste, slightly to the sourly side. That’s not to say it’s not nice, a unique taste that’s worth the try.

Otah @ Ole Sayang (10.50RM)
Otah @ Ole Sayang (10.50RM)

The Otah was not one of our favourites, mainly because we have a pre-determined idea of how a great Otah would be like; Moist on the outside, firm and full of ingredients on the inside.

The Otah at Ole Sayang was a little bit dry on the outside and the inside was not as “full” in terms of ingredients as we had imagined. The only plus point was the chilli mix was quite nice and partnered the fragrant rice well.

Ayam Rendang @ Restoran Ole Sayang Melaka (10.80RM)

One of the other Peranakan dish that you would usually try to determine the “skill” of the Peranakan restaurant would be the Ayam Rendang.

At Ole Sayang, the spiciness was just right and the rendang mixture together with the tender chicken was ma ma mia!

Chendol @ Ole Sayang Melaka (2.50RM)

The chendol makes a nice round up to a traditional peranakan meal.

Overall, the restaurant serves up authentic peranakan food at a fraction of a restaurant price. Worthy of its reputation.

Before we left, we noticed many other patrons leaving with bags of keropok. Intrigued with thoughts of “how good can a keropok be?!”, we bought 2 bags at 10RM each.

No regrets there! The keropok turned out to be one of the best we’ve tasted. PLUS it stays crispy even after staying in the fridge for a few days, no signs of lao hong (non-crispiness after exposure to air) at all!

If there are 2 museums that you must visit in Melaka, one of them has got to be the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum…

Of course the other is the Melaka Maritime Museum.

If you are interested in stories and legends, it’s there!

If you are interested in jurisdictions in Melaka, it’s there!!

If you are interested in artifacts and costumes worn, it’s there!!!

Basically, all the things you want to know about how Melaka came to be, it’s all there. So, to provide a good background to the rest of your trip in Melaka, the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum is a must visit museum if you have to make a choice to visit 1 or 2 museums only.

One of the more interesting displays (at least to Kate and I) were the legends and heroes of Melaka. They tell of stories of jealousy, loyalty and deceit. Plus, life sized sculptures do bring the stories to life…

This structure shaped like that of an olden day vessel is actually the maritime museum in Melaka!

From atop of the hill at St. Paul’s Church, you can actually see this structure. Intrigued by what we saw, Kate and I ventured towards that general direction (from where we saw the ship) and visited the maritime museum.

There are plenty of photo opportunities around the maritime museum, we were amazed at the sheer size of the ship and how well maintained it was.

The entrance fee to the Melaka maritime museum is actually quite cheap at 3RM. We would definitely recommend going in and have a visit because of the wealth of knowledge that the museum offers. Of course it is also a cheap price to get out of the sun if it is a sunny day…

Travel Guard Chartis – Your Must-Have Travel Companion

Travel Guard Chartis

Customize your coverage with MyTravelGuard

Travel Guard Chartis
Travel Guard Chartis
Besides the essential things that you must have when you travel, one of the most crucial things that people tend to forget or leave to the last minute is travel insurance.

Kate and I normally leave this to the last minute because of the flexible travel dates that we might have. But this is not a problem with Travel Guard Chartis. This is because we can get a quote instantly and even make our purchase easily online.

Trip cancellation, emergency medical, and flight!

The reason why we highly recommend Travel Guard Chartis as a must have travel companion is this…

Murphy’s Law

We dont want to say this but according to Murphy’s Law : Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. This may include things like loss baggage, flight delays or even travel accidents. When things happen, we want to know that they are being well taken care of and this is when Travel Guard Chartis comes in.

With Travel Guard Chartis, we know that

1. If our baggage is lost – “Yay! Compensation!”
2. If flight is delayed – “Yay! More pocket money!”

Basically, when Murphy strikes, we know that we are well covered.

For Shopping Trips

Have you ever been in a situation whereby you’re on a shopping extravaganza and you’re thinking to yourself if these things can fit into the luggage?

Then you would think about what will happen if my luggage gets lost in translation and never comes back. Then all of my hard work of choosing, picking the right colour, bargaining would have gone to waste. Of course if you have bought luxury goods, that would add to your misery when this happens.

That is why when Kate and I go for shopping trips, we make sure that we are well covered especially on our flight back. We also make sure that the coverage would be able to take care of the loss (at least in terms of monetary compensation) in the event of a baggage loss.

With Travel Guard Chartis, this is easily taken care of. With the different packages available, you can choose to take a higher premium coverage or have custom-tailored coverage suited to your travel needs.

Convenience

One of the main reasons why we love Travel Guard Chartis, is the fact that it is so convenient to get ourselves covered for the trip.

Usually before our trip, we would just go online, pick the package we want and tada, we are covered and ready to go. You can easily save your coverage in a soft copy and bring it along with you. The contact numbers in the event of emergency are also there as an easy reference for you.

Snappy coverage. That’s what we like.

Peace of mind

Of course with Travel Guard Chartis, we can always have a peace of mind when we go for our vacations. That’s one of the things you want to take off your mind and just fully relax when you go on a vacation right?

With Travel Guard Chartis, You can!

Click on any one of the Travel Guard Chartis banners and you will be on your way to your next well-protected and well deserved vacation!

A Famosa aka Porta De Santiago | Malacca Attractions

A Famosa aka Porta De Santiago

In addition to St. Paul’s Church, Stadhuys and Jonker Street, another famous attraction in Malacca is A Famosa Fort also known as Porta De Santiago.

A Famosa aka Porta De Santiago
A Famosa aka Porta De Santiago

According to another one of our extensive research (2mins on Wikipedia), it is one of the oldest surviving European structure in Asia. Once a fortress built by the Portuguese, the gate is the only remaining structure now.

Around the A Famosa aka Porta De Santiago

This video shows the A Famosa up close and if you listen closely, you can also hear a tune resembling “My Heart Will Go On”.

No…you are not hearing things. It’s simply because there’s a violin player playing within the gates.

At the end of this video, you can also see a flight of red stairs that leads up the hill. This will bring you to St. Paul’s Church.

You can read more of our whining when you read that post…

St. Paul’s Church | Malacca Attractions

Front View of St. Paul's Church Melaka

Please dont make the same mistake that we made when we visited St. Paul’s Church in Malacca

The mistake was this…

According to google map, St. Paul’s Church is actually just a short walk from Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, just across the road right?

WRONG! There is actually a climb up the hill from A Famosa (aka Porta De Santiago). It’s a climb with many steps at that!

So now we all know google maps dont include depth/height for its maps…

But back to our story.

St. Paul’s Church Melaka was built in 1521 and refurbished in 1566.

Today, it is a much visited tourist attraction in Malacca and is part of the Malacca Museum Complex which includes A Famosa (aka Porta de Santiago) as well as the Stadhuys.

Another interesting story about the St. Paul’s Church is that it was actually a temporary burial site for Francis Xavier, a pioneering catholic missionary who was active in southeast asia during those times.

According to legend, he died out at sea but before he died, he told the sailors that he wanted to be buried in Goa India. So before his body was shifted to Goa, St. Paul’s Church was the temporary burial site for about 9 months.

To commemorate Francis Xavier, a statue of him was erected and it stands just outside of St. Paul’s Church overlooking the sea…

So if you ever visit St. Paul’s Church. Dont be mistaken that it is actually “just beside” A Formosa. Well…actually it is but after climbing those stairs!

You’ve been warned…

How to St Paul’s Church Melaka

If you take a look at the map above again. The walk is pretty straight forward if you stay at the Hotel Equatorial Melaka.

Across the street from Hotel Equatorial is the Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall. If you follow it all the way through (either on the inside to avoid the sun in the day or on the outside to have some fresh air) you will arrive at the food court.

Take a walk out of the food court and up the stairs. You will then arrive at the A Famosa.

Walk through the gate and up those stairs and tada, you arrive at St. Paul’s Church Melaka!

Top 3 Things to do at Jonker Street aka Jonker Walk | Malacca Attractions

Jonker Street Melaka

There are so many things to do at Jonker Street! Let’s find out what are the things to do right here in Jonker Street Malacca! If you have read our last few posts, there are actually many things to do here at Jonker Street (aka Jonker Walk)…

Jonker Street Melaka
Jonker Street Melaka

Well, in this post, we are going highlight our top 3 things to do at Jonker Street!

1. Find out which chicken rice is the best.

Malacca is of course famous for its chicken rice balls. There are so many of them in Malacca, so which one do you go for?

Fret not! 2bearbear.com has tasted the top 2 rated malacca chicken rice ball stalls to give you the lowdown on Hoe Kee and Chung Wah.

Once you have tasted them, why not leave a comment below to tell us all what you think about it?

2. Try out baba/nonya dishes and desserts at Jonker 88.

Malacca is all about food isnt it? Yet another foodie thing to do on this street is to makan at Jonker 88. If you’re the type who just want to try the street kinda nonya/baba food, you’ll find them right here.

The desserts are also hot sellers here. From afar, if you see a queue, it’s quite likely that the queue’s at Jonker 88.

3. Enjoy the night market!

Jonker Street Melaka

When night descends upon Jonker Street, stalls come out to play! At about 6pm, hawker stalls and stalls selling all sorts of things are seen along Jonker Street.

From afar you should be able to hear the “kok kok” candy man who is separating malted sugar (with peanuts) using his tools, effecting the familiar “kok kok” sound.

Then there are stalls selling mee sua (a type of vermicelli) which Malacca is famous for. We’ve bought some and they’re really good and dont “disintegrate” like most other brands.

You can also choose to just chillax at Geographer cafe – a pub that also serves up local delights. The drinks are rather expensive but a small pint wont do much harm right?

Of course there are street foods that you should savour as well. On this occasion, we saved our tummy for Fried Oyster aka Orh Lua!

We’ve even asked permission from Aunty to take a video on how to make fried oysters!

How to make fried oysters

You can see that we actually strafe left to avoid the smoke coming from the fried oysters. The wind was blowing in our direction!

But still, the whole process was captured and here is the final product…

Durian Chendol @ Jonker 88

One of the must visit stalls at Jonker Street has got to be Jonker 88!

Jonker 88 features many local nonya food as well as yummy desserts!

Having determined the winner of the battle of the Malacca Chicken Rice Ball, Kate and I were now too full to go on to the mains. Hence, we went straight for the dessert corner and ordered the famous durian chendol as well as the sago gula melaka…

Although we were very full, we slurped every bit of the 2 desserts! The gula melaka (not suitable for diabetics, confirmed plus chop plus double confirm) was sweet (fei hua) but had a nice cooked sugary taste to it.

Also, we regretted not filming the shifu when she put on the gula melaka…it was with such skill! One scoop one kill in one fast paced motion!

How to get there

Jonker 88 is located in the middle of Jonker street. One key indicator is the long queue in front of it, especially on the dessert side.

But we must say that the sago gula melaka and durian chendol were worth the wait!

Have you tried the nonya/baba food that Kate and I didnt have the space to stomach? If so, share with us in the comments section!

Stadhuys Melaka aka Red Square or Dutch square | Melaka Attractions

Stadhuys Melaka

One of the most prominent attractions in Melaka has got the be the Stadhuys (sometimes spelt as Stadthuys). In Dutch, it basically means the city hall or town hall and used to be the administrative centre during the dutch colonial times.

Stadhuys Melaka
Stadhuys Melaka

The Stadhuys (also known as Dutch Square) is home to the oldest Protestant Church in Malaysia – Christ Church Melaka

Trishaw Rides at Stadhuys / Christ Church Melaka
Trishaw Rides at Stadhuys / Christ Church Melaka

Not only so, it is home to the Museum of History and Ethnography right at the edge of the square where the trishaws gather. Speaking of trishaws, Kate and I took a ride on one of the trishaws right here at Stadhuys! Here’s a video of the beautifully decorated trishaws…

Trishaws at Stadhuys

The Stadhuys is arguably one of the oldest architecture from the dutch colonial times. That is why there are so many tourists here! But beware (you tourists-to-be)! As far as possible, try not to buy your souvenirs from the rows of shops there. We bought a sleeping mask (one of those you wear on the plane to sleep) for 5MYR (Ringgit) but we realised that the same mask could be bought for 3MYR at Jonker street!

Not much in terms of SGD you may say…but it is still a 40% difference! :O

The Stadhuys is really quite a small square but there are nice photo spots. These include photos with the fountain, Christ Church Melaka as well as the beautifully decorated trishaws!

Fountain at Stadhuys Melaka

Of course a far more high tech and better fountain show at be found at the Bellagio Fountains. But we digress…

To end of this post, enjoy this 360 degrees view of the Stadhuys (Red Square) done by Kate, our in-house photographer and videographer!

Yup…we all know who to look for if we feel “blair-witched”!

How to get there

Stadhuys is located Laksamana Road and if you follow our well drawn map of Melaka…

It is right beside Jonker Street and a short walk from the St. Paul’s Church

Best 5 stars hotel in Melaka : Hotel Equatorial Melaka

View of the pool as you walk out of the lift lobby

According to our extensive research (2 mins via google), we found that there are basically three 5 stars hotel in Melaka (could be more).

They are

1. Hotel Equatorial Melaka
2. Renaissance Melaka
3. Holiday Inn Melaka

Of these, Holiday Inn Melaka has the newest and best features of these hotels because it is the latest collection in the Melaka 5 stars hotel arena.

However, its location puts it behind Renaissance Melaka and Hotel Equatorial Melaka. (This is when you consider attractions to be centralised near Stadhuys and Christ Church).

So this leaves us with Renaissance Melaka as well as Hotel Equatorial to vie for the best 5 star hotel in Melaka.

We can see that Hotel Equatorial is a short walking distance from St. Francis Church and thus Stadhuys. Also, according to our 2 min google, it was found that Renaissance Melaka is almost the same walking distance to the north.

Hence, both Hotel Equatorial Melaka and Renaissance Melaka are neck in neck at this point. The 2 factors that should determine your choice are thus

1. Style/Class/Newer. If you’re looking for a hotel with more class, style and is newer, Renaissance Melaka would be your choice.

2. Price. However, if you are looking at the cheapest of the 5 stars like us, the winner is clear, Hotel Equatorial Melaka! Plus, while we were there, there was a 88RM F&B credit for each night of stay!

Another reason why Hotel Equatorial Melaka trumps Renaissance Hotel is because it is RIGHT BESIDE the Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall! There’s lots of shopping, makan and even a cinema!

Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall beside Hotel Equatorial Melaka

So here’s a recap why Hotel Equatorial Melaka is the best 5 stars hotel in Melaka (compared to Renaissance Hotel and Holiday Inn Melaka)

1. Location. Near to all Melaka Tourism Attractions!

2. Price. Cheapest of the three 5 stars Hotel

3. Shopping. RIGHT Beside Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall

4. Nice Swimming Pool

5. Excellent Views!

All in all, we were thoroughly satisfied with our stay and we’ll leave you with a panoramic view from the balcony of the hotel!

Battle of the Malacca (Melaka) Jonker Street Chicken Rice Balls : Which is better? Chung Wah Chicken Rice or Hoe Kee Chicken Rice?

Interior of the entrance to Hoe Kee Chicken Rice

Whenever you visit Malacca, a visit to Jonker street is a must.

Why?

There is the night market, little shops with souvenirs and unique items on the side of the streets, street food and delicacies.

Jonker Street Melaka
Jonker Street Melaka

But one thing remains a mystery to most visitors to Jonker Street…

Which chicken rice ball stall is better? Chung Wah chicken rice ball at the start of Jonker street or the nicer looking Hoe Kee chicken rice ball in the middle of the street?

2bearbear.com has taken upon ourselves (and our tummies) to once and for all, clear this mystery for all our readers.

Let’s have some applause please…(*clap clap clap*)

Right…but first we must warn our readers as well.

DO NOT EAT AT A FORMOSA CHICKEN RICE! NO!!!!!!!! (echoes disappearing into the abyss…)

Ok…we shall leave it at that.

Moving on. We first visited Chung Wah Chicken Rice

Chung Wah Chicken Rice Ball @ Start of Jonker Street

Chung Wah Chicken Rice @ Start of Jonker Street
Chung Wah Chicken Rice @ Start of Jonker Street

Please recognise this picture. Although it says “Kedai Kopi Chung Wah”, but it really is a coffee shop that sells only one thing, CHICKEN RICE! and drinks of course.

Plus, the chicken rice at Chung Wah usually sells out at about 3-4pm. Be there earlier to avoid disappointment. For us, we were there at about 3:30pm.

We were lucky.

Minutes after we sat down, the metal gates were closed (with the rest of the diners still inside of course, not that they’re gonna kidnap us or something)

The next thing we realised was that the aunty immediately asked us if we wanted half a chicken and 1 set of rice balls each. HALF A CHICKEN FOR 2 PERSONS?! Being the first time there, we nodded.

This means that either:

1. Most people who went to Chung Wah were REALLY hungry. OR

2. After sizing Tom up, aunty decided that it has got to be half a chicken for us.

Half Chicken @ Chung Wah Chicken Rice
Half Chicken @ Chung Wah Chicken Rice
Chicken Rice Balls at Chung Wah
Chicken Rice Balls at Chung Wah

The portion of the half chicken was what we expected it to be. However, if the 2 of you are feeling really peckish, half a chicken is just right. Aunty was right after all.

Taste Test

The chicken at Chung Wah has a fragrance of sesame oil to it and when you try to decipher the sauce…you’ll realise one voice in your head going

“Hey, I know this taste!” while the other voice in your head goes

“No, you dont!” This goes back and forth, forcing you to dip the sauce on your spoon to try it over and over again.

The thing is, the sauce is unique. It has some excellent proportion of spices, sesame oil and soya sauce to it that makes it special.

Next comes the chicken.

Tender and firm at the right places. Kinda oxymoron right? The texture of the chicken was good. Keeps you coming back for more.

So what about the rice?

The thing that we did not get quite used to about chicken rice ball is that, IT’S COLD!

Eating chicken rice cold…that’s something really different. Guess they need to cool it or allow it to cool before the ball takes shape.

However, we did not really like the rice ball, simply because it lacked the fragrance that chicken rice ought to have. The saving grace was that, pairing with the chicken was a great combination…

The half chicken at Chung Wah (with 10 balls) costs RM19.70.

As for deco, it really was like a coffee shop but the old kind? Allows you to feel the ambience somewhat like that of the 70s.

Next, we headed off to Hoe Kee Chicken Rice (not immediately, but almost, because of our keen interest to solve the chicken rice ball mystery at Jonker street once and for all!!)

This is definitely a great place to bring your friends to for a nice meal of local food. A great place to entertain and meet up with your guests as well.

“How about the food?” You might ask.

Taste Test

The chicken at Hoe Kee was normal. Really nothing much to shout about here. Dont guess us wrong, it was a decent plate of chicken. Meat was fresh but taste was not as memorable and lasting as that of Chung Wah.

However, the rice did trump Chung Wah’s in that there was the chicken rice fragrance that one craved. The coldness was still there but the taste was much better.

The quarter chicken at Hoe Kee (with 5 balls, Soya Bean and Herbal Tea) costs RM14.20

Verdict

Now, to put the mystery of the Jonker Street Chicken Rice Ball Battle behind us…

2bearbear.com declares the winner of the “Battle of the Malacca Jonker Street Chicken Rice Ball” to be…(*Drumrolls*)

Chung Wah Chicken Rice Ball!

Well, the chicken basically won the war for Chung Wah. Although they lost in the chicken rice ball department, the unique sauce was more than able to make up for this loss.

And did we mention that the chilli packed a punch at Chung Wah’s?

Nonetheless, in terms of ambience, Hoe Kee won hands down and if a gathering with friends and family is your focus, Hoe Kee is the place to go.

For great taste, you cant go wrong with Chung Wah.

We hope that with this post, we can finally put this age-old mystery of “which Jonker Street Chicken Rice Ball is better” to rest!

Things to do Places of Interest and Attractions in Los Angeles California

There are so many things to do and attractions in Los Angeles California! Let’s find out what are the things to do right here in LA! If you have been following our posts, we did mention that we sneaked a short tour out of Las Vegas to visit Los Angeles California!

Road Trip to Los Angeles California!
Road Trip to Los Angeles California!

For a Singaporean, it is not common to see deserts or mountain ranges. So it was really a different experience as we rode across the desert terrain…

Desert Terrain on route to Los Angeles California
Desert Terrain on route to Los Angeles California

The distance from Las Vegas to Los Angeles was about 400km and it took us about 3 hours or so to reach there. Hmm, just a thought…wonder how long it would take for people to shift stuff from your house from Vegas to LA and vice versa…

Santa Monica

Our first stop in California is Santa Monica! Kate and I (well…mostly Kate) wanted very much to visit Santa Monica because of the many many times this venue has been featured in movies and partly because of the Savage Garden song of the same name. The following should be some familiar views of the Santa Monica Pier…

View of Santa Monica Beach from end of Santa Monica Pier

View of Ferris Wheel and Roller Coaster at Santa Monica (With Light)

There, we had a romantic walk down the beach and of course along the Santa Monica Pier and to see the iconic ferris wheel. To end the day, we enjoyed the sunset along with corn dogs (excellent creation btw) and drinks…

Hollywood Sign

The following day, we set out to see the famous Hollywood Sign. We did some research on our own and found out that great views could be seen from Mulholland Drive.

From this picture, it seems a little small. This is mainly due to our not so professional camera (any sponsors out there?) However, with the naked eye, the view was breath-taking. There was also excellent views of the LA city skyline…

Hollywood Boulevard

Since we were at Hollywood, the most famous street there has got to be Hollywood Boulevard. There we visited the famous Kodak Theatre where we had a good view of the Hollywood sign as well. The Kodak Theatre is also home to the Oscars as well as the American Idol…

View of the Hollywood sign from Kodak Theatre

The nearby Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is also a famous tourist attraction not only because it is a prime venue for Hollywood movie premieres but also of its tradition of imprinting the hands and feets of celebrities at its fore court.

We also managed to catch a glimpse of some B list celebrities (Basically those whom you know are celebrities as you have seen them in movies but cant really pin point there names because they just played that odd role in the movie you’ve watched. ) at the movie premiere of Going the Distance (starring Justin Long and Drew Barrymore). Nope, we did not see either of the stars but we did see many limousines picking up well dressed people (directors, producers and rich people we reckon) and of course screaming fans.

Walking along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, we managed to also identify familiar stars of our favourite celebrities. Here we found out that celebrities were classified according to the 5 categories namely; Movies,TV,Radio,Theatre and Music

There are also other sights that you ought to catch when you’re here in Hollywood…

Luxury brands can be found here. Though many shopping belts like Oxford Street, Champs Elysees and even Orchard Road carry these luxury brand names, Rodeo Drive offers a classy feel and even a hope of a glimpse of celebrities!

Los Angeles California

Kate then planned a walking tour of Los Angeles city. I just told her that we have got to visit the Staples Centre, the rest was up to her.

First, we visited Chinatown

Passing by a cantonese dim sum shop, we dropped by to have some egg tarts and char siew bao. They tasted nice, but in a different way.

A short walk away was the famous Philippe Original French Dipped Sandwich which we saw from Man vs Food on Travel Channel. We had to try it not only because it was recommended on MVF, but also because we had tried another version at Di Nic’s @ Reading Terminal Philadelphia.

After the food tasting, we pronounced Di Nic’s the winner. The sandwich from Philippe was quite tough even after the dip. The roast was also not as tasty as that of Di Nic’s as well.

Next begun our city tour!

We also armed ourselves with Starbucks coffee which tasted really good at an affordable price as well (slightly less than 3 bucks a cuppa)

We then arrived at the Staples Center…

Staples Center Los Angeles California

We were at the home of the LA Lakers! (think Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson).

At the souvenir shop, we realised that the Staples Center was home to 4 teams – the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks!

We also popped by the Grand Central Market

and Little Tokyo…

When you see this tower, you know that you are at Little Tokyo. Here, you’ve got to try some Japanese food. We had a salad, the Char Su Ramen (Extra Large at 9.7USD) as well as the Pork Curry Rice at 8.20USD. The servings were huge and the taste was great! The Char Su was full of flavour and had a succulent texture to it! Yum!

We also had a nice stroll through the Mexican Market at Olvera Street where you would see mexican souvenirs, small guitars and traditional costumes. The walk through was shaded and had some lanes that you can visit and explore as well…

Verdict

There are so many things to do, places of interest as well as attractions in California. The city of Los Angeles can provide nice walking tours while Hollywood exudes a different class of its own.

Be it the beach, the high life or the city, Los Angeles certainly makes a great visit for tourists and locals alike!

P.S. Did you know that Los Angeles means “The Angels” which is why the city has also a nickname of “The city of Angels”

Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame and its 5 categories

After visiting Grauman’s Chinese Theatre as well as the Kodak Theatre, Kate and I took a walk along the Hollywood Walk of Fame…

Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame stretches for about 2km it consists of mainly a star bearing an artiste or celebrities’ name that formally comes from these 5 categories

1. Movies
2. TV
3. Radio
4. Music
5. Theatre/Live Performance

The Hollywood Walk of Fame and its 5 categories
The Hollywood Walk of Fame and its 5 categories

Turns out that as we walked along the Hollywood walk of fame, we were so distracted and kept looking at the floor, thinking which celebrity would be next! Sometimes we would barely avoid oncoming pedestrians who must have thought, “What are these crazy tourists doing? Dont walk and look down at the same time!”

But that’s what we did!

It was fun to find stars that we know (because there were so many of them!) and these are just a few that we spotted…

The next time you are at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, try to locate the stars of your favourite artistes/celebrities. BUT! Be careful of oncoming (pedestrian) traffic!

Tourists on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Tourists on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

P.S. You may also like to know that you need not travel all the way to Hollywood to see the walk of fame. There are also replicas at your nearest Universal Studios!

P.S.s. Did you know that stars are given only nominated artistes and these artistes can be nominated by anyone. However, there are 2 catches. 1. Groups or people who nominate must pay about $30,000 for the fabrication of the stars. 2. The celebrity must attend the ceremony. If deceased, family members must attend on his/her behalf. No one really knows how the selection goes (done by a selection committee) after the nomination…

Amazing Glassmaking Craftsmanship of Murano, Venice

Glassmaking Craftsmanship of Murano Venice

Venice is definitely one of the “must visit” destination of all travel itineraries, not only because of its gondolas and one of a kind canals but also because of the feel that Venice exudes at the mention of its name.

In addition, research has also shown that Venice is sinking at a rate faster than previously predicted. Venice could potentially go under in the years to come and that makes it a stronger point than ever to experience this beautiful city.

Venice island hopping tours includes visits to Murano, Burano and Torcello. In this post, we will talk about one of the islands in Venice, Murano. Glass making is an art form that started in Murano. The names murano glass and venetian glass are therefore synonymous with each other.

We were led by our tour guide to the glass making factory and we were treated to a performance whereby the shifu (master) created this beautiful horse out of glass in mere seconds!

Murano Glass Making Shifu forming a glass horse in seconds!

We were all very surprised at the skill that the shifu demonstrates in making this glass horse. He had to craft the horse in the seconds that that glass was hot enough to be crafted yet cool enough to be held in place quickly. According to the guide, he had merely 30 seconds to make each portion quickly and accurately. The finished product…

Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant is located at 201 Keppel Road. It is a Chinese sit-down restaurant and opens daily for Lunch and Dinner.

Of course, the main draw of the restaurant is that it revolves! In this video you can see the floor of the restaurant revolving…

Rotation of the Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant

Because of its centralised location at Keppel, visitors of Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant can be treated to excellent views of our port, our city skyline as well as fire works (from Sentosa) in the evenings…

Of course, besides the excellent views, the restaurant does have its own draws such as

The meat is usually served with noodles while the crispy yet tasty skin is wrapped with cucumber and sweet sauce (green onions if you like some). Remember to choose the egg wraps!

Fried Toffee Banana at Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant
Fried Toffee Banana at Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant

This is a creation of the restaurant and involves frying the banana and coating it with sugar before cooling it in water (performed before the customers). The result is a crispy sweet and innovative dessert.

Another item on the menu that we liked was this

Crab with Egg White at Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant

This dish doesnt look like much but it does taste much more than it looks. Somehow the egg whites are separated into small parts (instead of sticking all together or being too small to feel the texture). The crab meat was fresh and the combination was well…refreshing.

We also tried the lobster and the fried fish in sweet and sour sauce as well but arent much to rave about.

Overall, the restaurant is an excellent place to bring your foreign friends. This is because, not only is it a classy restaurant, you can while dining, introduce them to parts of the city right from the restaurant as it rotates.

Footprints, Handprints and Signatures at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre Hollywood!

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre Hollywood

The Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was built in 1927 and resides along Hollywood Boulevard. It is actually a movie theatre and today still holds premiere for many of Hollywood’s most anticipated movies!

Grauman's Chinese Theatre Hollywood Boulevard
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre Hollywood Boulevard

The Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was built by none other than Sid Grauman. He is also credited with the building of the Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre just further down the road.

The reason why the Chinese Theatre is alot of more famous and popular than its Egyptian counterpart is not only because of its uniquely classy traditional Chinese structure, but also because its fore court is home to the various handprints, footprints and signatures of artistes and celebrities.

Donald Duck's Footprint at Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Famous characters such as Donald Duck also got their chance to leave their mark at the fore court of the Chinese Theatre. This means that now, not only real life celebrities get to imprint their mark on the fore court of the Chinese Theatre, as long as your’re famous, you might have the chance to do so! *The Kind of Pop, Michael Jackson will also be immortalised on 26 Jan 2012.

Julie Andrews Grauman's Chinese Theatre
Julie Andrews Grauman’s Chinese Theatre

At the fore court of the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, there is usually a HUGE crowd gathered there. Most are trying to take a photo with the imprints of their favourite celebrities while others are on tours of the Chinese Theatre, listening intently to the stories of their tour guides.

There are several stories as to how this tradition of immortalising handprints/footprints/signatures of celebrities/famous people started. The more common one often refer to a female celebrity who happened to step on the cement of the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre during construction. Sid Grauman thought that this was a good idea for famous people to leave their mark, then started this tradition.

The other version says that Sid himself made the mark and started the tradition. Whatever the story, today, it is a well loved tourist attractions for fans and tourists alike to get “close” to their beloved celebrities.

The huge crowd also presented a problem for Kate as she went about to take the photos. People were everywhere! Hence, this Harry Potter imprint had other avid potter fans in it as well…

Besides trying to haunt and hound your favourite celebrities in Hollywood, you might like to try catching them at the movie premieres at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. An easy way to do so is to look up the dates of upcoming premieres at the Chinese Theatre’s website and be there really early to get a good spot. Premieres are usually star studded events and fans will not be disappointed.

Kodak Theatre Hollywood : Home of the Oscars and American Idol

Hollywood Walk of Fame beside the Kodak Theatre

The Kodak Theatre is one of the largest live theatre in the USA. The theatre was designed by David Rockwell and since 2002 has been home to the Academy Awards aka the Oscars.

The Kodak Theatre is also home to the American Idol due to its ability to function at the highest level for live shows.

There are only a few things that we would like to point out about the Kodak Theatre, in addition to the fact that it is a venue for shows as well as a shopping mall.

1. The Kodak Theatre Elephant

The Kodak Theatre elephant is synonymous with the Kodak Theatre. The pair of elephants are so huge and tall that you simply cannot miss it as you see them stand guard over the fountains within…

On the Boulevard of Santa Monica : The Visit that changed our perception of Savage Garden’s Santa Monica

View of Santa Monica Beach from end of Santa Monica Pier

You know how the lyrics “Santa Monica, in the winter time” by Savage Garden always conjures an image of a cold chilly city in our heads? Especially when it’s coupled with a hypnotically slow beat tune?

However, this trip changed all that and more!

Iconic rides @ Santa Monica
Iconic rides @ Santa Monica

From our hotel, we keyed in “Santa Monica” into our GPS and reached our destination in about half an hour. We took some time circling the vicinity before deciding to park at a public carpark, placing 2 hours worth of coins into the meter.

The first thing we noticed about Santa Monica were the quaint little shops lining the inner streets from the beach. They range from pubs to convenient stores to shops that sell cute little items. It was quite enjoyable walking down the street not knowing whats in store at the next shop.

As we approached the sea front, we were greeted by the sound of the waves as well as this set of instructions to comply with…

As we walked along the beach, we enjoyed the fine sand sifting through our feet as we headed towards the iconic Santa Monica Pier.

Before long, we reached the Santa Monica pier and as we walked along the board walk of Santa Monica pier, we saw sesame characters such as Elmo and Oscar…

Kids were given the opportunity to take photos with their favourite sesame street characters.

On the board walk, endless throngs of people traverse along this scenic boardwalk enjoying rides (such as the historic carousel, iconic ferris wheel) from the amusement park, eateries and restaurants along the pier or even just laying back and enjoying the sights and sounds…

Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Malaysia – Is it worth a visit?

Johor Premium Outlets JPO Malaysia

Following the huge success of the premium outlets franchise, Malaysia opens its own premium outlet in Johor.

Named Johor Premium Outlets or JPO in short, the outlet mall boasts of 80 designer and premium brands at factory outlet prices. Discounts can range from 25% to 65% everyday.

Getting there

Johor Premium Outlets is just a short drive 1 hour drive from Singapore. From the north south highway, take an exit at Exit 253 and follow brown coloured signs that says “Johor Premium Outlets”. It’s quite hard to miss.

After all the hype that Johor Premium Outlets (JPO Malaysia) has garnered in Singapore, Kate and I decided to drop by JPO to take a look. As we have been to the largest premium outlet, Woodbury Common Premium Outlet it provides us with a basis for comparison.

At first glance, the look and feel of Johor Premium Outlets (JPO Malaysia) resembles that of Woodbury Common Premium Outlet. As we entered the entrance of Johor Premium Outlets JPO, we did something that would put all shoppers to shame…

We visited the food court first!

We headed to the information office to get the most important thing, the map of Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Malaysia!

Map of Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Malaysia
Map of Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Malaysia

Map of Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Malaysia

With the map, we can ensure that we cover every square inch of the JPO! After taking a look at the map, we realise that it is actually quite a small outlet mall. There are basically 2 rows of shops for 2 levels and that’s pretty much about it.

In order to discover the best discounts here at Johor Premium Outlets, Kate and I made sure we visited almost every single shop at JPO for our readers! Unfortunately, the sales are not half as good as Woodbury Premium Outlets. Eventhough there were long queues at Johor Premium Outlets such as this one at Coach,

There werent really many buyers…

The truth is, once you have been to Woodbury Premium Outlet, you’ll realise that all other discounts are not really that fantastic. However, the bright spot here is that compared to retail prices, Johor Premium Outlets JPO does offer substantial discounts. Which is why we bought a pair of shoes eventually.

After a long day at “work”, trawling through the sales at Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Kate and I rewarded ourselves at Taang Shifu (translated as Master of Soups)

In order to get a 10% discount at Taang Shifu, remember to flash your Maybank credit card at the information store to get the VIP discount booklet (more like “pamphlet”). The 10% discount is only for ala carte items. We had the abalone mee sua as well as the double boiled pear dessert…

After discount, the 2 items only cost about $25RM which was quite cheap considering it was a chinese restaurant. Plus, they tasted good as well!

After covering the second level, we decided to treat ourselves to crepes

There was a super long queue at crispy crepes, primarily because of its cheap price at $5.20RM for sweet crepes AND $6.30RM for savoury crepes.

We have also captured a video of the entrance of Johor Premium Outlets, Malaysia just for our readers…

Entrance of Johor Premium Outlets JPO, Malaysia

Verdict

After all the hype about the Malaysia Premium Outlets, Johor Premium Outlets JPO, we must say truthfully that we do agree with most comments online that the sales and discounts are really not that fantastic.

Having said that, we do think that the Johor Premium Outlets JPO can be a good place to spend the weekend to shop and source for great deals. Kids can be “deposited” at the play ground and fed with yummy crispy crepes while parents shop for what they want.

If you have something that you would like to buy in the city, why not hold that thought and give Johor Premium Outlets JPO a go instead? You can be assured that it is at least 25% cheaper than retail prices. 🙂

So yup, our conclusion is that Johor Premium Outlets JPO is still worth a visit afterall!

Today, we are going to share with our readers, the best spot to see the Hollywood sign and that is Mulholland Drive!

Mulholland Drive Scenic Point - Best view of the Hollywood Sign!
Mulholland Drive Scenic Point – Best view of the Hollywood Sign!

Do a quick search on google and you will be able to find Mulholland Drive scenic point. Not only does this lookout point provide splendid views of the Hollywood sign, it also gives breath taking views of Downtown LA!

From Mulholland Drive, you can also have a clear and unobstructed view of the Hollywood Bowl…

The Hollywood Bowl is the largest natural amphitheater in the United States of America!

However, if you are one who just wants to have “been there done that”, the Kodak theatre also provides a good view of the Hollywood sign…

Other than that, the Griffith Park Observatory also has an excellent view from the right side of the Hollywood sign.

However, the recommendation from 2bearbear.com is that if you are able to, make a trip to Mulholland Drive and enjoy the scenic, breath taking view that Hollywood has to offer!

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…or does it?

View of New York New York and Excalibur from Hooters Hotel Las Vegas

Ah ha! Thought we will be revealing all we did in Vegas didnt you? Well…as they say, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” or does it really?

Well first, let us give you the low down of how you can arrange your own trip to Las Vegas!

Planning

As we have mentioned in our post about “How to successfully plan your own holiday and vacation”, it is always important to plan early and plan ahead!

As usual, Kate did ALL the planning! But it is important to note these few points as they can really help you stretch your buck…

Hotels

Did you know that the price differs ALOT if you stay in the same hotel on weekdays compared to weekends? Prices can differ by as much as up to 50%! Usually, hotel rates are cheaper from Sundays to Thursdays (mondays to thursdays for some hotels) and the prices sky rocket over the weekends (for obvious reasons – weekend getaways!)

Also, there are many fabulous hotels that do not cost a bomb. Try searching for hotels in Vegas and list them according to price. You will realise that cheap hotels that have excellent hotel facilities do exist in Vegas. This is because they usually attract tourists with low priced stays and free tickets to headline shows so that you will spend at their “you know what”. So try to snatch those good deals but dont fall prey to “you know what”!

Car Rental

It is advisable to rent a car in Las Vegas, simply because walking in the hot Nevada sun is not what you want to do, especially in the summer months.

In addition, with the mobility of a transport, you can visit hotels and restaurants outside of the strip which Kate and I were able to do.

Plus, parking is usually free at the hotels!

You can do so by visiting the car rental companies online and look for cheapest rate available. Also, you can just pop by the car rental booths when you land at the airport. Booking online could be cheaper given that there are deals going on every now and then. You could also save the hassle of wondering whether there are cars in the cheaper categories available.

Btw, it would be good to download USA maps to your GPS so that you would travel easy as well.

Tour Packages

If you are visiting Vegas for the first time (and probably the last time if you are from a distant land), make sure you sign up for the visit to Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam! The prices are relatively acceptable and they offer you a hassle free option to visit these world-renowned locations!

Having given some tips before hand, this is the low down of where we visited…

The Lowdown

Kate and I landed at the McCarran International Airport and got the keys to our car at the car rental booth. It’s a breeze if you have booked it online in advance.

We tried several hotels this time round and spent our first night at Hooters Hotel…

The view from our room was awesome as well…

As it was the summer season, the water in the pool was exceptionally cold! We think it was purposely chilled to make sure that the guests were not chao ta (smelly dry or burnt in hokkien) under the hot sun…

After a nice refreshing swim and some drinks by the pool, we headed out to see the sights on the Strip…

**After the first night in Vegas, we actually drove to California before returning back to spend a few more nights in Vegas. We will talk about LA,Hollywood and Santa Monica in another post…

The next day, we headed out to Hash House a Go Go to check out this restaurant as introduced by Man vs Food on travel channel.

The following day, we checked into the Excalibur (increasingly better hotel each day; and thus the cost)…

At this juncture, we should remind our readers to always try to “negotiate” with the receptionist for a better/higher room with a good view of the strip. They are almost always able to do so on weekdays and off peak periods when occupancy is low.

At various hotels, they have various affliation with shows about town. At the Excalibur, we were able to get half priced deals for the stand up comedy “Defending the Caveman”…it was pretty much enjoyable although we dont really recall much about the show today…really one of those shows where you want to have a good laugh and let your hair down…

The next day, we took the option of going to visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Along the way, there was an opportunity to visit the Hoover Dam as well…

The last hotel we visited was the MGM. The best of the 3 hotels on our list this time round…

There was even a day bed in the room which added to the chic factor…

MGM Hotel has the best swimming pool on this trip to Vegas. It boasts of a 6.6 acre swimming area!! That is about 6-7 football fields!! We had an enjoyable time in the lazy pool and visiting different themed pools which was really cool…

On the way back, we were invited to rate an upcoming TV serial and vouchers were given to us in return. So we set down and were greeted by this…

Device to rate TV serials
Device to rate TV serials

It was really quite simple, all of us would watch the show (this time it was Hawaii Five O!) and rate it by turning the knob according the how good each part of the show was.

We recalled that the show was quite raw in that not all the special effects and sound effects had been added in. There were some parts that were quite boring as well (that was when we turned the knob to 0). However, the show eventually screened and is into its second season! 😮

Remember at the start of every MGM movie, there was a lion bursting unto the scene? These are his grandchildren at MGM!

Grandchildren of the original MGM Lion

We understand that they do not reside there but at a nearby facility and brought over to the hotel…

In the evening, we caught a magic show by Nathan Burton…it combined magic with comedy and was pretty much enjoyable.

On our last night, we enjoyed the famous fountain show at Bellagio…

Overall, Las Vegas is a great place to spend your holidays. Food and stays are relatively cheap and plenty of international shows and musicals abound. Just make sure that you limit your time at the tables and you’d surely enjoy the holidays at Vegas!

Huge Portions of Food! Man vs Food Las Vegas – Hash House a Go Go and Nascar Cafe

Man vs Food Las Vegas – Hash House a Go Go and Nascar Cafe

Travel Channel’s Man vs Food has led us to 2 eat outs in Las Vegas!

Though there were many foods introduced in this episode of Man vs Food Las Vegas, we managed to visit 2 of them and we didnt regret it at all!

They are Hash House a Go Go and the Nascar Cafe…

Hash House a Go Go

Hash House a Go Go is located at 6800 West Sahara Ave, Las Vegas NV 89146 and its hours of operation are as follows…

Breakfast & Lunch 7:30am-2:30pm

Dinner Monday-Thursday 5:30pm-9:00pm
Dinner Friday & Saturday 5:30pm-10:00pm
*Closed Sunday Nights

As with all famous eat outs, there was a queue at Hash House a Go Go. We waited for about 10 minutes and got our own seats, being shown to our seats by the friendly waiter at Hash House a Go Go.

The first thing we noticed about this restaurant was that there was no pretense and was totally casual. Everyone was having fun, enjoying their food and the company they had.

We browsed through the menu and laid our eyes on the

Big O’crispy hand hammered pork tenderloin sandwich ($13.95) as well as the Sage Fried Chicken stacked with bacon waffle, hot maple caramel reduction and crowned with fried leeks ($16.95).

We waited in anticipation as we saw huge portions of food being served to the other tables and we were not disappointed when ours arrived…

Big O'crispy hand hammered pork tenderlion sandwich with Macaroni and Cheese on the side (Hash House a Go Go Las Vegas)
Big O’crispy hand hammered pork tenderlion sandwich with Macaroni and Cheese on the side (Hash House a Go Go Las Vegas)

Have you seen this piece of pork tenderloin? It is HUGE! Have you ever seen a piece of patty that exceeds its bread buns by this much? Check out the portion of the macaroni and cheese as well!

Taste: Just as the name suggests, the pork tenderloin was cripsy and juicy. There was something about the flatness that made the whole sandwich that extra palatable. The mac and cheese also went well as a side. Yum!

Man vs Food Las Vegas – Hash House a Go Go and Nascar Cafe
Man vs Food Las Vegas – Hash House a Go Go and Nascar Cafe

Our first thought (could be yours now) is that “How can fried chicken go with waffles and sweet maple syrup?!” The answer: YES!

Taste: Again, the fried chicken was juicy and cripsy (telling us why its famous) and the waffle had bacon in it! Take a look at this!

Sage Fried Chicken stacked with bacon waffle, hot maple caramel reduction and crowned with fried leeks (Close Up at Hash House a Go Go Las Vegas)
Sage Fried Chicken stacked with bacon waffle, hot maple caramel reduction and crowned with fried leeks (Close Up at Hash House a Go Go Las Vegas)

The maple syrup blended well (not too sweet) with the fried chicken. The fried leeks was for us, the secret ingredient that brought these sweet and savoury food pieces together! Each mouth brought out the aroma of the fried leek (unlike anything we’ve tried) while the tastes of the bacon waffle and fried chicken sort of explodes in your mouth as you chew! Wow!

We’ve got to say that Hash House a Go Go is one of the best restaurants we’ve visited in the states. We were pleasantly surprised by the ingenuity and innovation that the restaurant has placed into its food. Needless to say, the taste also had the ‘wow’ factor and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience there.

Nascar Cafe – Closed

Nascar Cafe at Sahara Hotel (Closed)
Nascar Cafe at Sahara Hotel (Closed)

The Nascar Cafe used to be located at the Sahara Hotel. However, the hotel has since closed and hopefully the cafe has relocated as well. (if our readers do know of the relocation, leave your comments below)

The main reason why we popped by at the Nascar Cafe was because of the challenge introduced in Man vs Food Las Vegas!

In each episode of Man vs Food, there would be a food challenge for host, Adam Richman. In this episode of Man vs Food, the challenge was to finish eating “THE BOMB”!

What is “THE BOMB”? It is actually a 2 feet, 6 pounds burrito…

The Bomb at the Nascar Cafe - MVF Challenge
The Bomb at the Nascar Cafe – MVF Challenge

Coincidentally, we met with a challenger of the MVF challenge and there was even a table allocated just for the challenger. This challenger had finished about a quarter of the bomb and we could see that he was totally “bombed”…and here’s the reason why…

Fillings of "The Bomb" at Nascar Cafe
Fillings of “The Bomb” at Nascar Cafe

“The Bomb” is filled with loads of ingredients including fillers such as rice (rice?!), beans, meat and the wrap. On the top, it is covered with cheese, dressing and olives!

Although the price of “The Bomb” is just $19.95 (good for many), we decided to go with the baby burrito (the smaller version of the bomb)…

Baby Burrito @ Nascar Cafe
Baby Burrito @ Nascar Cafe

We were really really glad that we didnt take up the challenge. Not only because if we did not complete the challenge we would have to take a picture wearing a pink T-shirt that says “Weenie”. BUT because we even had trouble finishing this quarter of the bomb! Kate and I both at that!

If you enjoyed our content, “Like” us on Facebook Today!

Remember to leave your comments for 2bearbear Singapore Travel Blog in our comments section below!

Of course, if you can finish the challenge, the prize at that time was to have unlimited rides on the now defunct roller coaster of Sahara Hotel.

Overall, thanks to MVF, we were able to experience 2 unique and memorable restaurants in Las Vegas!

Cheers!

It makes a statement from a distance away and even from the aerial view! You would thoroughly enjoy the Fountains of Bellagio if you were taking a helicopter ride down the Las Vegas Strip as well!

However, the best part about the Fountains of Bellagio, is that its FREE!! Visitors can just take a look at the timings of the Fountains of Bellagio and be there about 5 minutes before the start of the shows to enjoy!

The Fountains of Bellagio dance to many different tunes. Famous tunes such as “Fly me to the Moon” as well as “Viva Las Vegas” are favourites of the Fountains of Bellagio. Singapore Flyer – The World’s Largest Giant Observation Wheel!

Singapore Flyer - The World's Largest Giant Observation Wheel

Finally, Kate and I got to board the Singapore Flyer! It is currently the world’s largest giant observation wheel standing at a height of 165m!

We are so proud to have finally “flew” on the Singapore Flyer and I must applaud Kate for the courage of taking the flight because of her fear of heights and general dislike for thrill rides (see Busch Gardens and Universal Studios Singapore post)

Before we begin, we know that visitors would like to know the price and opening hours of the Singapore Flyer…

Opening Hours : 8:30am – 10:30pm (With the last admission at 10:15pm)
Ticket Sales : 8:00am – 10:00pm

Ticket Prices

Adults (13 yrs and above) : $29.50
Children (3-12 yrs) : $20.65(Children below 3yrs : Free)
Senior Citizens (60 yrs and above): $23.60 (Singaporeans/PR)

Getting There

Of course, the most straight forward way is to call a cab and tell the cabby to take you to “Singapore Flyer”.

There are also buses where you will need to alight at Temasek Avenue. The buses are 106, 111, 133.

But we prefer the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). You have basically 2 options. The first is to alight at Promenade MRT Station which is just a 5 minutes walk from the Singapore Flyer.

We prefer option 2 though. And on this trip, we took this option and really enjoyed the walk. Taking this option meant that you would alight at City Hall Interchange and walk along City Link Mall, cross over to Esplanade and walk along the River Front. This is about a 20 minutes walk…but along the way, you will enjoy these views…

To allow our readers to see the benefits of this walk to the Singapore Flyer, here is a video of the views of Marina Bay…

As seen in the video, you would be able to take pictures of the Marina Bay Sands, Artscience Museum, Helix Bridge, Singapore City Skyline, Fullerton Hotel as well as the Singapore Tourism Icon – The Merlion!

After this nice leisurely walk, we were greeted by the Singapore Flyer…

The Singapore Flyer
The Singapore Flyer

The Singapore Flyer

We got our tickets in advance and headed straight to the entrance of the Singapore Flyer. There are scans as you enter so it may take some time during peak hours (i.e. sunset, school holidays, morning tour groups).

You would first be led into the Journey of Dreams. The Journey of Dreams is inclusive in the ticket price of the Singapore Flyer and it is basically a series of exhibits and multimedia interactives that allow visitors to know more about the Singapore Story as well as the Singapore Flyer itself…

At the Reservoir of Dreams, you will see 3 giant spheres that are basically artistic displays. The first one is Oneiroi’s Orb that depicts the Flyer’s spherical shape through circular artifacts. The next is The Planet which is the first inflated PufferSphere using internal projection in Asia…

The last is the Numeric that displays all numbers (Facts, Figures, Physique) associated with the Singapore Flyer.

After the Journey of Dreams, you would enter a tunnel that has numbers on the side that blinks 5,4,3,2,1 that is somewhat like astronauts entering the tunnel to their space flight with the numbers signifying the countdown to blast off!

As you approach the capsules, please note the curvature of the platform so that you wouldnt trip and fall. Recently, a dad did not hold on to his stroller and the kid was caught by the safety net…

The other thing you would notice is that smaller wheels (like tyres) that are used to rotate the Singapore Flyer itself. This is the mechanism used to turn the larger wheel (Singapore Flyer) using smaller wheels (tyres)…

Though it is not really clear, but you can also vaguely see the demonstration of the smaller wheels turning the Singapore Flyer here in this video…

You can also at this moment, opt to board a flyer with lesser people, but it really depends on the people who are enjoying the Journey of Dreams. If they stay there and you let the passengers behind you board first, you might just have a whole capsule of the Singapore Flyer to yourself! In our case, we shared with 2 others which was very enjoyable and private 🙂

At the top of the Singapore Flyer, you will enjoy basically 2 views…to the east, the shipping lanes and ALOT of HDB flats (HDB flats are Singapore’s public housing) and to the west, the Marina Barrage, Marina Bay Sands, parts of the port. And of course, a breath-taking view of the Marina Bay itself…

We were also able to see the aerial view of the marina bay where the wishes of Singaporeans are written on round inflated balls and lined up in the waters. Still cant figure out what it is meant to shape like though…(The island of Singapore maybe?)

After the flight, remember to disembark with care as there is curvature of the platform that you would need to look out for.

Kate and I then proceeded to the Singapore Food Trails for a sumptuous meal!

The Singapore Food Trail is actually a project undertaken by the Singapore Tourism Board to recreate the old street food hawkers of the 1960s…

Stalls at the Singapore Food Trail

Alot of effort (and money) have been placed into recreating the feel of the 1960s. The design of the stalls, the furniture and even the floor (made of tarmac to represent the road) have been meticulously thought through.

The best part about the Singapore Food Trails is its food!! It has a collection of some of the best hawker foods in Singapore! What’s more, the price is still within the acceptable range (though it is of course cheaper at the food centres)! Given that you just have to go to one destination to taste all the best hawker food in Singapore, the price is really well worth it. Today, we tried the following…

Tour Options to Experience the Majestic Grand Canyon

Majestic Grand Canyon - South Rim's Widest and Deepest portion

There are actually several options to tour Grand Canyon…

But first, to whet your appetite, this is what you will get to see when you visit Grand Canyon!

Majestic View of Grand Canyon

South Rim Tour of Grand Canyon

This was the tour we took, primarily because it is usually cheaper and the weather is usually better on this tour to Grand Canyon. This tour also allows you to make a stop at Hoover Dam to take some picturesque moments before moving on to see the majestic Grand Canyon!

Majestic Grand Canyon - South Rim's Widest and Deepest portion
Majestic Grand Canyon – South Rim’s Widest and Deepest portion

The bus ride from Las Vegas was about 5 hours. Of course Kate slept along the way. I even got to snap pictures of her drooling!

Our first stop was at Hoover Dam.

Iconic Hoover Dam on route to Grand Canyon
Iconic Hoover Dam on route to Grand Canyon

The ride around the dam was amazing. It seemed as though you are transported into “Transformers” and imagine this futuristic structure (Hoover Dam does look futuristic doesnt it?) sitting right in the middle of a vast desert.

We also managed to grab a magnet at the souvenir shop there. Remember to take a picture with this Hoover Dam sign as well!

Hoover Dam Sign
Hoover Dam Sign

We were also told by our guide that Boulder City was actually built for the workers so that they could continue with the construction of Hoover Dam.

We made a stop over at the Grand Canyon visitor centre where visitors can watch an IMAX film of the Grand Canyon. We also had our chinese takeaway lunch here. Not bad for food out in the desert 🙂

Next was the Grand Canyon itself!

Grand Canyon – South Rim
Grand Canyon – South Rim

We were given 2 hours to walk ourselves. It was different. You get to find a spot, enjoy the vast range of the Grand Canyon and really just feel the tranquility. At times, you might even hear the call of the eagle!

West Rim – Sky Walk

The West Rim offers the world famous Sky Walk which is a horse shoe shaped platform allowing you to “hang over the cliff” of the Grand Canyon. With a transparent platform, you can have that feeling of walking over the Grand Canyon as well. We didnt choose this option because of the price and also mainly because Kate did not like the transparent floors. But Im sure visitors on this tour would have a great time as well. ______________________________________________________________

Other Options – Helicopter and Boat Ride

There are also other options to see Grand Canyon. The Helicopter ride offers you an aerial view and also descent into the valley whereby you can enjoy a boat ride on the famous Colorado River.

Of course, the helicopter ride, sky walk and boat ride will cost a little bit more.

However, whatever your choice may be, a visit to Grand Canyon will surely be one of your most memorable moments you’ll have.

Have you noticed these iconic McDonald’s Restaurants?

iconic McDonald’s Restaurants

Through our travels, we have noticed a few outstanding McDonald’s restaurants…

Broadway McDonald’s

Iconic McDonalds with many light bulbs at its entrance NYC
Iconic McDonalds with many light bulbs at its entrance NYC

This McDonald’s was featured on the travel channel’s McDonald’s special. It is easily recognised by the light bulbs used to show the red and yellow colours of McDonald’s. When you actually stand below these bulbs, you can really feel the heat! We wonder what’s the cost of lighting up these bulbs annually…perhaps its time to switch to LED for energy savings!

The Original McDonald’s

The replica of the Original McDonald's @ Downey, California
The replica of the Original McDonald’s @ Downey, California

This particular McDonald’s has 2 stories to tell. For one, if you look closely at the top of the M, there is a mascot that most people do not recognise and associate with McDonald’s today (unlike Ronald McDonald). His name is Speedy and was the first mascot used by McDonald’s before he was replaced by Ronald McDonald.

The other thing particular about it is that it is a replica of the original McDonald’s at Downey, California. This was taken along the way on one of our trips around USA. Immediately, we stopped by and had to take a photo of it. Again, this was also featured in the Travel Channel’s McDonald’s special where the arches, if you notice, have not yet combined to form the golden arches (M) we know today. Although from a distance, when the arches overlap, the golden arches can still be seen.

If you have seen other outstanding McDonald’s restaurants, do share it with us through your valuable comments below!

Day Out at Saizeriya Japanese Italian Restaurant Singapore

Saizeriya Japanese Italian Restaurant Singapore

Saizeriya is a Japanese owned Italian-styled family restaurant.

No wonder it seemed so familiar when we first saw its sign from a distance away. The green and red colours of the logos immediately reminded us of the same chain of restaurants we saw in Japan…Now Saizeriya has hit our shores in Singapore as well!

The thing we love about Saizeriya is its price! It is truly a family oriented restaurant with budget of the family as its priority. Pastas, pizzas and dorias average about $8 and there are some that go as low as $4-5 bucks!

There are also lots of sides for the family to choose from, such as the chicken wings and escargots

Popular Saizeriya Chicken Wings
Popular Saizeriya Chicken Wings

Popular Saizeriya Chicken Wings

This Saizeriya we went to is located at Liang Court. It is usually crowded during meal times but the crowd clears very quickly because of its no frills eat-and-beat-it concept.

Saizeriya has recently installed a new system that allows customers to call for the waiter/waitress when they’re ready to order…

System to call for service
System to call for service

System to call for service

Much like the bell you use onboard planes or for that matter in hospitals, once you press the bell, a ring tone would be heard and your table number flashed on a board, informing the waiter that you are calling for them. This system of course makes it more efficient but it can get kind of irritating sometimes. But, the cheap and good food more than make up for any discomfort of this sort 🙂

A quick look at the menu…

We ordered the pork and beef meal as well as a spinach pizza ($7.90 nett for the pizza). We also ordered a pasta as well as the wings (we really cant remember the rest of the prices but rest assured they are competitively priced).

We thoroughly enjoyed the meats, pasta and pizza. Though the pasta may look simple, it was full of flavour and the texture of the pasta was perfect! Not overcooked and still slightly springy (QQ as the chinese would say) in texture. Yum!

The pizza was also overlayed with generous portions of the spinach! The meats were again generous and juicy, not dried unlike some restaurants.

The highlight of eating at Saizeriya has got to be its drink bar where you can have coffee, milo, juice and other soft drinks, FREE FLOW for around $3! Hence, it is a good place for friends to have a meal and catch up over a cup of coffee (or many cups for that matter) without burning a hole in the pocket.

Overall, Saizeriya definitely rates highly for price and serving portions. The food at Saizeriya can be considered cheap for a restaurant, yet the portion and standard it delivers is comparable or much better than most other restaurants! Whats more, the price you see on the menu is the price you pay! Because there is no GST or Service Charge on top of the price you see on the menu, all prices are NETT prices!

The only setback would be that it could get rather noisy during peak hours. Other than that, Saizeriya is definitely a great place to hang out with friends or to have a no-frills meal with your loved ones!

Top Attractions and Things to do in London!

Top Attractions and Things to do in London

There are so many things to do and attractions in London! Let’s find out what are the things to do right here in London! Be it history, monuments, musicals, river cruises or just plain old attractions, London has it all! It is ranked right up there with New York and (of course, our beloved country) Singapore as truly, the world’s metropolitan/cosmopolitan city!

Kate and I caught a train from Paris to London this day and were pleasantly surprised by the speed of the trains (in excess of 200km/h). Within 2 hours, we were transported to London!

There are many hotels and hostels here in London, so fret not! Our recommendation would be to pick a clean, cosy room, no frills. This is because there are simply so many things to do that the only time you’d be back in your room, is when you really need to rest!

Here are some of the top attractions we visited!

Tower of London

Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge has got to be one of the most iconic bridges along the river Thames. With its hydraulic raising mechanism, it allows ships to pass through this shipping channel. Another fun fact is that, this iconic Tower Bridge IS NOT the London bridge often mistaken by tourists. The London Bridge is in fact the next bridge upstream.

Westminster Abbey

Affectionately known as the Abbey, it is also where Prince William and Kate Middleton recently wed. Its unique Gothic design places it right up there with Notre Dame.

River Thames Cruise

Not to be missed is a cruise along the River Thames. Not only can you enjoy the leisure ride as you enjoy the cooling breeze, you can also see all the attractions along the river such as Big Ben and The London Eye. Talk about killing 2 birds with one stone (chinese saying)…

Harrods

If shopping is your forte, the world renowned Harrods is definitely your place to hang out. At Harrods, you should be able to find almost all gifts for all occasions. Even if you have nothing you want to get, why not take home a Harrods bear for the little ones or just a Harrods recyclable shopping bag?

Others

There are of course many other things to do and attractions in London such as musicals, bar hopping, Hyde Park and free museums (British Museum, National Gallery). Take time to explore this grand old dame, reinventing itself as it prepares for the Olympics in 2012!

Review of “Slice – The Pizza Reform”

Slice – The Pizza Reform

Slice - The Pizza Reform
Kate and I stumbled upon a new chain of fast food named “Slice”. As the name suggests (and shown on the take away counter), the restaurant serves slices of pizza.

The concept is that pizzas are served in slices which allows customers the flexibility of choice in choosing their favourite flavours, in contrast to the more traditional pizza restaurants where you’ll have to order a whole round pizza.

Ambience

The restaurant has a trendy feel to it and features many revolutionary figures such as Ghandi and this famous “We want you” poster from WW2

Other than that, it resembles most fast food restaurants which is the part that stands out. It resembles a fast food restaurant yet serving “slow food” such as pizzas.

Taste

Kate and I ordered 3 items off the menu (all 3 items were chef’s recommendations). The Cheese Steak…

The Cheese Steak (cant remember it’s actual name) is rich in mushroom and the beef has the traditional American beef taste that we enjoyed.

The Avocado Chicken…

Avocado Chicken

The Avocado was really fresh and had a tangy taste to it. It complimented the chicken and cheese really well to produce a good mix of flavours.

The Yummy Gummy Milkshake…

Yummy Gummy Milkshake
Yummy Gummy Milkshake

The yummy gummy was quite original in that real gummy bears were blended into the milkshake (“ouch” for the gummies) and produced a interesting blend of vanilla with sweetness, chewy”ness” and fruity”ness”.

Verdict

Overall, the pizzas did not disappoint. The portions were big and were priced competitively. We missed out on the soups because they were sold out. The only complaint was that the milkshake could be richer in taste.

Otherwise, the overall experience was great. Definitely a good place to hang out with friends over a great meal.

2 Different Experiences at the Niagara Falls!

Approaching Horseshoe Falls Niagara Falls via Maid of the Mist Ferry

“Yay! The motel we are going to stay is super near the airport! We can walk there and save money!”

To our horror, we arrived at the “wrong” airport at Niagara Falls, NY! (I blame the auto-complete function on most websites these days). Our trips have usually been well-planned and without hiccups, but this time round, we got to experience the mistake possibly many travellers made when they choose to fly to visit Niagara Falls.

I knew Niagara Falls was in Buffalo…so when I had to select the flight from Las Vegas and did not know which airport to go, I typed in “Buffalo”, and the auto-complete function “told” me that I will land in Buffalo Airport. We arrived there and was looking forwards to the walk to our motel when we discovered that we are more than 70km away from it!!!

The nice old man at the information counter produced a map and gave us our bearings. We were supposed to fly into Niagara Falls International Airport, not Buffalo Airport!!! He then told us there was a bus that comes every 45mins and it would cost us about USD20 per ticket to get to Niagara Falls State Park. We panicked as we happened to miss the last bus (and it was already 4pm). So we did some calculations and we decided to rent a car instead.

But it wasn’t easy either. Tom had to go from counter to counter to check what were the available cars left for the day. Thank the Lord there was a economy car at Hertz going for USD50/day! It was the only small car left at the airport. Phew~

We quickly loaded our luggage and relied on the GPS to get to our accommodation for the night – Swiss Cottage Inns. We drove across this bridge…

before we arrived at our motel…

The motel “boasted” of an outdoor swimming pool, a microwave in the room (that is how we heated up our leftover buffalo wings; see Original Buffalo Wings post), and provided pastries for breakfast.

The friendly owner told us about the fireworks on Fri/Sat nights during the summer months. As we arrived on a Friday and we rented a car, we were excited to catch the fireworks!

We parked at Seneca Casino, hoping to enjoy the buffet dinner but we were denied entry because we left our passports in the motel. Tom was totally devastated and we made our way to the State Park. We managed to grab a bite at the food court.

With a full stomach, we leisurely strolled down to the Falls. We could hear the loud roar and we enjoyed the cool breeze and mist as we approached it. The rapids looked amazing and mystical with the special lightings. Finally, we reached the Falls, and hurried to get a good spot for the fireworks. What a great way to end our first night at Niagara Falls! 🙂

Niagara Falls Lights Up with Fireworks!

Day 2 @ Niagara Falls

We were planning to take a ride on the Maid of the Mist, and as “kiasu” (scared of losing out) Singaporeans, we woke up early to ensure that we were the first few at the ticketing counter. The ticket costs USD13.50 for each adult ticket. We thoroughly enjoyed our ride even though it left us cold and wet. The Falls was truly majestic and we felt energized as we left the boat.

We then spend the morning lazing on the grass, having a small picnic (ice cream and chips!) and challenging each other in a round of word game that cannot be named. We even managed to catch a pretty rainbow! (where is my pot of gold? :P) Visiting the Niagara Falls in the day and in the night indeed allowed us to experience two unique and wonderful aspects of the majestic Niagara Falls!
